Nursery Decisions?

Has anyone started/started thinking about the nursery yet? We're still in the stage of deciding on some sort of theme and DH and I cannot agree. He wants something very cute and sweet (and gender neutral) and I want...something different? At first I was thinking classic Winnie the Pooh but for some reason soured on the idea. He wants...wait for it...cats. Cute cats. I don't even know what that means. When I ask him he says, you know, just pictures of cute cats.

As a compromise I said we could do fun bright colors with a few black and white cat illustrations. He agreed at first but then he and my mom ganged up on me and told me black and white was inappropriate for a baby. Yesterday I suggested we do music themed with framed records on the walls and he basically said, too cool for baby.

Am I the only one who's not feeling the overly cute nursery? I don't see why our tiny baby can't have just a little bit of cool in their room. DH urges me to "just let baby be a baby."

Last question, when will you start ordering furniture/setting up the actual room? We are converting from DH's office into a nursery and I know he will want to keep his space as long as possible. I'm fine with that but don't want to wait too long to get things set up.

  • I just started planning it this past weekend, just as something fun to do now that we know the sex. I don't like overly cutesy or theme-y stuff either. With DD1, we did an orange and turquoise "theme." We had orange crib sheets and an orange changing pad, and then she had wall decals of turquoise sea turtles before we moved out of our rental house, and a turquoise accent wall after we bought our current house. She also has an undersea mermaid print from Land of Nod, a turquoise lantern, and a small Etsy print of an orange dragon, since she was born in the Year of the Dragon. The rest of the stuff was white/neutral.

With this current DD, the room is already painted a warm tan, and I don't want to repaint, so we need to bring in a lot of color. I am planning a subtle woodland theme, with a couple of not-overly-cutesy woodland fairy accents. I think we will bring in a bright plum and some accents of forest green, which should look good with the tan. I just ordered some original vintage prints of forest fairy drawings, and we will do a couple of woodland animals on pillows and such.

We already have most of the furniture we need this time, but with DD1, I think we tracked down the dresser we wanted at around 20 weeks after weeks of Craigslist searching, and then the rest of the furniture we bought/got right before our shower, so around 28 weeks.

  • I don't really like to be theme-y. My daughters room is vintage floral prints with muted pinks and greens, a tree print on the wall and a tee-pee.

This baby is more of a challenge since we aren't finding out what we are having. I found a fabric that I am absolutely obsessed with, it's arrows with feathers in the ends, greys and tan colors. Check out etsy for some inspiration and find a fabric to build off of. I will leave a little un-done to add some gender specific touches once the baby arrives. Boho girl (think dream catchers) cowboy/Indian boy (cowhide and bows)

I like the idea of not being too baby so that they can grow with the room and your not doing a character overhaul every time a new theme or movie comes out.

I'm starting everything as soon as all family leaves after Christmas. Were doing grey and white with pops of green and yellow or turquoise. I'm not into themes for a nursery. When the baby gets old enough and wants a theme then I'll redo the room.

I see nothing wrong with black and white for a nursery.

Yes! Not into themes, what's wrong with black and white? I feel like I just saw a cute article with pictures do black nurseries done right.

Our spare bedroom is a recovery room for our niece for the next six weeks (she's having brain surgery right now and I'm bumping from the hospital). I'm planning on leaving the room very neutral and just decorating with colors that make ME want to spend time in there. Bunk beds and desk are staying, so it's already set for a growing child. :)

    ETA: here's that article!

  • I don't really think we have a theme, other than color. And I knew I wanted hints of mermaid in there, because I'm obsessed with them. So there will be a print hung up and maybe a coral lamp I found online. Overall baby girl's room is going to be blush, gold and mint. That's my theme, hah. However finding bedding that goes is literally exhausting me. I wish I was into BRU themes and could just pick a bedding set.

  • I think black and white is a great idea. Me? I love a theme but it's not going to be "cutesy" or "matchy". I'm going with a woodland creature type deal with midcentury/west elm dresser and currently researching cribs. Baby won't notice what's going on in there for awhile so make sure it's something that makes you happy to walk into and excited to decorate!

  • I'm not sure what we are going to do. DH wants Monster Inc. theme but make it babyish(sp?). He says no to everything I have suggested so far.

It depend on if we put the baby and DS3 in the same room or have the baby room with us for the first year.

  • I think color scheme counts as theme.

We ARE cat people but even I think that's weird for some reason. I am also obsessed with pom poms right now and was thinking that I could make some cute decorations out of all of the scrap yarn I have laying around.

What makes things a little more complicated for us is that we're not finding out and we only plan to be in our rental for 1 year post-baby. So I want to make sure that whatever we do is easy to move with us.

How difficult is it to remove the decals from the wall?

  • I also like the idea of a black and white nursery.

This is my DD’s old nursery which will be the baby’s new nursery.

If it’s a girl, it will stay exactly the same except new crib/dresser because I sold both.

If it’s a boy, I will change to probably gray and green or gray and teal.

  • How difficult is it to remove the decals from the wall?

Not too bad. It took us a straight razor and about an hour of work, and then a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser when we were done.

  • I would find some good ideas on pinterest of what you had in mind for music theme.  Most guys or parents have a hard time envisioning more modern looking nursery ideas that don't involve a cartoon theme.  Initially the cat idea seems a little odd...but maybe on pinterest you can also find some ways to work in a few cat details?  I'm just a pinterest fan when it comes to the nursery b/c I kept trying to explain things to my DH and mom and they had no clue what I was talking about until I showed them examples.

DD's room is below. And the new LO will be this bedding and purple and the blue in the bedding for the walls, a chair rail to separate just like DD's!

The bedding I am ordering is below.

    IT'S A GIRL

  • We won't be painting and re carpeting until February (we moved to our new home in May and both desperately need to be done in babys room). The furniture that I fell in love with (crib and dresser) are currently on sale so DH is ordering it tomorrow. We are going to attempt delayed delivery but I'm not too worried about it. So excited to be ordering the furniture :) I have yet to make a theme decision. If girl, probably mint, bronze and pink accents. If boy, probably grey with blue accents. I'm too indecisive.

  • We are doing a vintage primary color theme.  I have some old nursery rhyme prints, a vintage alphabet poster, a vintage abacus and old toy blocks that were the collective inspiration.

I've actually seen a lot of the "baby" version of the monsters inc characters, so the stuff for it is out there(:
  • I'm glad this post came up.! I've been really flustered trying to think of a girl theme I really like (not just a color scheme, but an actual theme) I really like disney but don't want to do princesses..but not sure how to make it girly without them. DH wants to paint one wall pink and white checkered like a race flag which I'm perfectly fine with and I would totally do a racecar theme but can't find any good ideas or items to make it girly. Seems like a lot of the good themes are geared towards boys.
  • We don't know the sex as of yet but we both decided against characters/themes. Instead we will just have a color theme and use modern patterns. I want to keep it very simple and not too busy.

DH and I have decided if we have a boy it will be classic muscle car Theme and I haven't talked to dh about it yet but I want pink Amd navy blue nautical theme for a girl, with chevron of course.

Well probably start the nursery around March I may not even get a crib right away since for the first 3 months my DS was in my room with me last time so I may just het a pack and play with bassinet however I'm planning on cosleeping again. No changing table (I loved mine but I'd rather have a dresser this time and put a changing pad on top) and probably a glider if I find a used one at the right price
  • We went with mostly greys and white with pops of yellow. We also got quite a lot of jungle animal stuff but I wouldn't quite call it a theme. I figured it was all stuff we could reuse for future LOs too, regardless of whether it's a boy or girl.

My bosses friends nursery is that theme so she crocheted them a white and yellow chevron blanket with grey elephant stole boarder. Looked great!

This is a friends' kid's nursery that I think is really cool. Its not baby, but still really cute. It could grow with him into kid hood, yet works for a baby too.

  • Baby 2 will be sharing a room with DD..the room is tan with a two toned green striped lower wall...If it's a boy I'll replace some of the girly wall hangings on one side of the room with more boy friendly ones...but none of it will get done before baby is here and we know the sex...My biggest problem is that I can't find a crib that I like...and don't really want to purchase the same one as DD has....I want both babies to have their own sets when the get older (lifetime crib) and not identical beds...especially if this is a boy ( and gut instinct is feeling that way)...anyone have a crib they love?
  • @beezybaby‌ I was looking at these decals! Love the forest thing.

I've had themes picked out for a while. If babe is a girl, we're going with The Wizard of Oz, if a boy then it'll be Harry Potter. (This kid is going to learn early that momma is a nerd..) I wanna go pretty subtle with the theme though. I don't want to paint the Emerald City or Hogwarts on the wall or anything. I'm an artist and seamstress, so I see myself making a lot of decor for the room. (MIL's response to a Harry Potter nursery was "Don't scare the poor kid!" I promise I'm not putting Voldemort and dementors around the room..)

We don't have a lot of furniture yet though. Just a dresser and bookshelf that were extra and just laying around the house. I think my parents are going in on a crib, so my mom and I glance at them when we're out shopping. The room we're using as a nursery is currently filled with storage crap, so we need to focus on cleaning that out first.
  • @marybeth080710‌ I love the sound of your DS's room. If our baby is a boy, I may steal that idea :) I'm a huge fan of vintage and planes could be so cute :)

  • We are doing our nursery gray, once we actually get started. I already found out we are having a boy I just want the room to be very neutral and not look super babyish. I will probably tie in some navy just so we have some color in the room. But thinking about the nursery stresses me out, so I haven't given it too much thought. I think my mother and MIL are more stressed about the nursery than me. ;;)
  • I'm not into themes at all. We bought neutral colored furniture (white and natural wood) before we knew the sex of our baby and an awesome deep blue color chair. It's very calming and neutral. We wanted our baby to grow with the room and will not have to buy our toddler and even teen furniture when she grows up (other than a bed).
  • We are having a baby girl and her nursery is going to be vintage/50s Hollywood inspired with gray walls, gold stars, Marilyn Monroe/Audrey Hepburn photos and some pops of coral and mint and gold. Also adding a Lucille Balle corner too:)
  • Thinking about Dr Seuss as a theme and using bright primary colors. We want to stick gender neutral so we can buy once and keep for future babies. Fx to avoid pink (we're expecting a girl) and can keep to yellow and green.

I've had our nursery planned since April or so. We had been trying for a while and it all just kind of fell together. It's mostly gender neutral, with a few sex specific accents tossed in once it is again confirmed babe is in fact a girl.

    Here's her nursery, though.
    #AdelynElise.

I wanted something simple that she can grow into and something that we won't have to change a lot again in a few years. Her dresser, crib and cart are all Ikea, the chair is from Walmart. I think the rug is from Urban Outfitters and my husband plans on doing the same flooring as the rug picture. A few things are from Etsy, Modcloth or Anthropologie. A lot of the accents are from Target. There's no real theme, but I guess birds. Her dream blanket and swaddling set are aden + anis "For the Birds" and I love the prints so much.

Also, our plan is to start the nursery when my husband is on vacation in the beginning of February. At that point, we'll do the flooring and paint. I'll be 25 or 26 weeks, I think. I've started to collect a few accents for the wall and my sister is making her a dreamcatcher for Christmas. We'll purchase the bigger, more expensive stuff {crib, dresser, chair} with income tax in March or April. Babe will be sleeping in our room for the first few weeks, so I'm in no real rush to have her nursery completely done by the time she's due, it would just help if it were close to done for my stress and nesting.

  • We've decided to go with navy and lime green with other pops of colors. We were thinking sports or airplanes at first, but couldn't find anything we both liked and didn't want it to be too "theme"y. We will have a few planes/sports things mixed in, but nothing overwhelming.
