Migraines

Does anyone get migraines?  What do you use for relief?  I had my first one during pregnancy over the last two days and it was awful.  When I called my doctor, they said to take tylenol, drink a lot of water and sleep.  I asked about peppermint oil which I have used in the past and they said it was OK to use sparingly.

I've seen a few mentions in the symptoms thread but no actual discussion.  Just curious what anyone else with migraines did for relief.

Re: Migraines

  • I always had migraines around my cycle, obviously all my usual meds are not options right now.  I only had two headaches so far while pregnant and both times for me were when I was extremely over tired.  I took tylenol once, usually I think tylenol is garbage but it actually helped.  Water and sleep is a must!  honestly my plan is to just tough it out and go to sleep...I'd like to use the tylenol as little as possible.  If your migraines get really bad keep discussing with your doctor.  I knew a girl with terrible migraines and eventually they put her on percocet for it, i don't remember which trimester she was in.

  • I had chronic migraines throughout each of my pregnancies. This time I have not yet. Your dr might prescribe you fioricet. Maybe tylenol 3 if they are really unbearable. If they are really horrible for you, call dr back and tell them that.... They will most likely give you something else other than tylenol. At least that is what my experience was.
  • Yes mine are terrible! I use tylenol, which takes the edge off but doesn't relieve it completely. I also use an ice pack on my head and just try to rest as much as I can with my one year old running around.
  • My OB prescribed fiorocet for the really bad ones.  I usually only get one or two per year, but I've had two so far this pregnancy so I'm worried that I'm in for a long eight months.

  • I have "chronic" and "complex" migraines. Which sometimes makes my body feel like I'm about to have a stroke. Horrible stuff. They had to put me on daily preventatives and I had emergency abortive pills as well. Once I found out I was preg. I stopped everything cold turkey... Which resulted in I'm assuming withdrawal migraines. For 4 days non stop. It was horrible I couldn't eat, or sleep from the pain. But I have to keep the baby in mind so. Now when I get them I go in a dark room, get an ice pack, and rub vapor rub on my temples and a little under my eyes. That's all I've been doing so far. It's been tough. I've read that fiorcet is sometimes prescribed (which I have) but I don't feel comfortable taking it.
  • I've been prescribed Fiorecet & that plus ice on the back of my neck is the only thing that works. Sleep too! Beware when a storm is on coming in, the change in barometric pressure can kick them off too.
  • I had one today. Took a Tylenol, cold compress on the forehead and caved and had a Coke. I think the combination worked well, although it was gone after the Coke.

  • I've rarely had migraines before but have had a few already in my pregnancy. One lasted two days and I had to stay in a dark room, eyes closed and lie on my side or my head would thump. I definitely need tons more water and have noticed if a get stressed it turns quickly from a tension headache to full blown migraine.
  • I usually only get a few a year, but they are debilitating. I asked at our first appointment of I could still take my Maxalt if I do get a migraine and they said no. They said to call if I get one and they will prescribe something. Tylenol alone has never worked for me in the past. But I do always find laying in the dark in a very quiet place helps along with meds. I'm still crossing my fingers I don't get any migraines while pregnant.
  • I ended up in the ER this week. I have suffered from migraines since I was 10 years old! Unfortunately I also had to stop talking all my meds when I found out I was pregnant as well. In The ER they gave me benadryl and Phenergan. If it happens again I will try that at home first!
  • This is going to sound a bit silly but a spoonful of honey (pasteurized) does the trick for me. I've been a migraine sufferer my whole life, with many trips to the ER because of them. I cut caffeine and cigarettes out of my life the moment I found out I was pregnant, which only increased the strength of my migraines. I'm keeping my pregnancy drug-free so did a bunch of research on natural remedies & honey is the absolute best. I will probably continue to use it after birth. Making sure you're drinking tons of water also helps & hot/cold compresses on the back of your neck help with the pain. Good luck!

My migraines are pretty much cut out now that I've identified food triggers - red wine and corn products - but I've gotten them in a debilitating capacity since I was 8. Had a prescription for years, but eventually stopped it because it didn't solve the problem.

    For relief, my routine is:
-warm or cold cloth on the head/face depending on what feels better for each migraine
-ice cold water run over my wrists helps, temporarily
    -drink some coffee, then water
-acupressure - Google pressure points and self-massage them
-find a dark room and lay down, breathing deeply until I hopefully sleep it off

Of course, it works better with 4 ibu, but the ibu never provided anywhere near total relief anyway. I seriously recommend finding an allergy specialist to try to see if you can pinpoint delayed reactions to things in your environment, it changed my life! Stress still gets me sometimes, but fxd I don't get any migraines during this pregnancy.

ETA: Doc also put me on magnesium citrate supplements, they're OTC though

  • Interesting. I know someone who has Botox as a treatment for terrible migraines but also think this would not be a solution in pregnancy. But it is pretty interesting.

I actually had a completely debilitating one Friday night into Saturday morning, puked my guts out and the pain was unbearable. I too have a prescription for fioricet (from my old OB) so that is what I take and it helps a lot. I also do a cold wash cloth on my head and try to rest as much as I can.

  • I drink 3 ounces of coke and eat something salty, the salt helps absorb the liquids and the caffeine in the coke works wonders
