I still only shave above my knees occasionally. No one sees my legs anyway, haha. It wasn't a rule in our house, but mum never shaved her thighs, so neither did my sister or I.

We didn't really have many rules. I was allowed boys over, I got left alone in the house pretty regularly since I was about 11, we could watch basically anything we wanted on TV. My parents were pretty relaxed with me, my sister was having issues while I was heading into my teenage years, so I kind of got left to my own devices.

We weren't allowed coke! Or any drink or food with artificial colouring. That was because of my brothers behavioural issues being exasperated by artificial colouring.
We weren't allowed to be gay. That was another rule. Gay was a sin, and the worst thing you could ever be. My parents still don't know that I'm bisexual, and would probably have ended up with a woman if I hadn't married DH.

Glad my parents didn't have the gay rule. I'm the only straight child In my family.

Some of these are so funny!

I didn't have any weird rules.  It was just me and my parents though--my youngest brother is 10yrs older than me and he lived with his Mom, so I think we just did so much more stuff as a family that I didn't get a lot of rules.

Also, I never remember even having a discussion about shaving my legs with my Mom.  I just started shaving my legs.

The only stupid rule my Dad had was about going to this concert venue in Milwaukee.  It's in a not great part of town and in 1973 my Dad's car got broken into down there.  Fast forward to 2003 when I'm 21 and Dave Matthews look alike in my Communications class wants to go and see Bob Dylan with me and MY DAD SAYS NO!  Pf.  We had a come to Jesus meeting and I went anyway.  Every time I see a good show announced there I still think about my Dad's car getting broken into while parked there in 1973. :-)

I'm gonna go ahead and assume you are talking about the Rave, I got in so much trouble with one of my friends after a concert there when we were 16, she got lost and our car ran out of gas on Walnut, the cops were really nice and explained why we shouldn't be walking around 'that part of town' dressed the way we were... Then they called her parents.

Lol. So many concerts at the rave in HS....

And alpine valley. That wasn't the best place for high school students either.

    @kelbel527
I frequented Alpine Valley back in the day. Jimmy Buffett like 3 or maybe 4 times and of course Dave.

  • I always used to think my parents were so horribly strict but reading these they weren't...at all.
When I was little they limited my TV but more the amount not the content. I watch the Simpsons everyday and I had a TV in my room by HS. We didn't keep any junk food or soda in the house. As an adult I still don't and that just seems normal to me. I do remember hating that as a kid.
@jenndub‌ not letting a teenager wear deodorant? Cruel. To you and I imagine the people around you. X_X

  • My mom didn't want me inviting myself over to the boy down the street's house...makes sense now, and she was probably trying to teach me social etiquette, but I would instead just sneakily call him and tell him to call me back and invite me over so she would hear the phone ring and assume it was his idea.
I was the last kid (#6) and I think she had pretty much mastered parenting (or the art of picking her parenting battles) by the time I came around.

@kelbel527‌ yeah, I think it may be the reason my younger brother is having some issues. I'm quite sure he is gay, but doesn't know how that fits in to what he has had pushed on him all these years. My parents know that he won't tell them if he is. I will be the one who he comes to when/if he feels comfortable about telling someone. Or he may not be gay. Who knows.
That's so tough @MelsaX.  At least if he is, he's lucky he has you that he can go to.

I'm so grateful that my parents are open-minded.  My brother came out when he was 13.  My sister, however, waited until her late 20's (about 3 or 4 years ago?) but that didn't have anything to do with our family, since my brother has been out and fully accepted within the family for the last 14 years.  :)

Apparently my Dad is more stubborn than most parents.  He re-married into 4 more children that are younger than my siblings.  He never gave up any of his rules, even by the time he got to the 7th child.  My youngest step-sister asks me if he was this strict with us in High School and we just laugh.  Their Mom balances him out though.

  • My Dad had 4 kids with is first wife, and by the time he got me, they were 16, 24, 25 & 26, so his rules with them were way stricter than they were with me.

I also never worried about screwing up and having to tell my parents...chances are my oldest brother would have done way worse anyway.  I'm 30+ and I still have a healthy fear of my Mom.  My Dad was one that would talk you to death if you broke one of the rules.  Where 2 weeks could go by and then he'd say something like "and you know what else really bugs me about when you did x, y or z?"  FFS.  IT WAS 2 WEEKS AGO!  GET OVER IT!

That's why I never, ever bring up stuff that happened in the past when fighting with DH.  If you finish the argument in a day or two, you don't get to bring it up weeks later.  It's not fair.

Singing at the table. I thought everyone was not allowed to sing at the dinner table.I found out in college that most families don't have that rule explicitly. hahaha My mom just couldn't take all three of us singing at the end of a long day.

    You are adorable.
