I put some orange or lemon peel in the spray bottle of vinegar which smells much better than vinegar on its own.

We live in a pretty rural area so I'm considered pretty green/get crazy looks. Aside from cloth diapers (which everyone thinks we are still nuts for doing), I recycle as much as we can- we have a horrible recycling program here- only plastics 1-2, cardboard but no pasteboard, glass and aluminum and I have to drop it off versus pickup. I only use paper towels for things I don't want to wipe up with dish rags (cat pee or animal puke ugh!). Vinegar for cleaning. I want to get a cup but I haven't had a period yet so I haven't but the bullet yet.

  • Stringy, Ikea has good prices on FST.  I just look for good prices on towels and napkins because I don't feel that the money you save making your own is worth the effort.  But I'm lazy like that.
  • I try so hard to be green but it's a huge battle because my husband is not a team player. I buy recycled tp and he says he hates it and has to have Charmin. I recycle religiously, then I'll see he has thrown bottles and cans away in the trash. I try to only do full loads of laundry and he will wash 3 shirts because the one he wanted wasn't clean. I always turn off lights when I leave a room, he will leave them on all day or night. You get the picture. Sigh. I'm trying.

  • I just convinced SO to do unpaper towels. We got 2 dozen osocozy flats and some regular kitchen towels. We'll probably add the prefolds and GMD large flats when Cade is done with them. I just need to reorganize and find a better way of using them. I also need to move the paper towels so we don't use those as much; out of sight, out of mind. Plus a basket for the dirties. Maybe I should pick those up this weekend with all of my other shopping.

I also so badly need to get on the cloth pad wagon. I have thought about the diva cup, but anything that goes up in that region gives me UTI's, which is why I stopped using tampons. However, thanks to Paragard I have 1 week of horrid bleeding and then tons of spotting. I end up wearing a pad all the time and I'm super sensitive to plastics and adhesives. So, my thighs are so red they hurt. I get the same way with panties, but I don't have the money to get latex free underwear.

  • I will! Any recs for brands? As much as my ovaries protest I'd rather not get the Paragard taken out since me and hormonal BC don't mix and we can't have another baby until I lose weight and finish school (that's the agreement).

This thread is great reading! Does anyone have recommendations for good resources for DIY cleaning solutions?

The greenest thing we've got going is that we have a contract for solar paneling to be installed in the spring. We live in NYS and the tax incentives are AMAZING right now. Once they're installed I think my DH's campaign for electric cars is going to get much more serious.
We have pretty much decided our next car will be an electric/gas hybrid.  We'd love to go all electric, but we aren't sure how well that would work in an apartment.  (Our 5 year plan involves selling the house and moving into an apartment or rented condo.)

I sew my own, but I know we've had lots of threads where people recommend brands.  I would do a search for "mama cloth."
  • @nanabanana06  There are a lot of really good cloth pad sellers on Etsy.  There are also a lot of youtube videos about how to choose pads as far as material, length, shape, and seller reviews.  One good tip is to measure the disposable pads that you like and start with something in a similar size.  I really like cloth better than disposables for many reasons, one is that you can get them soo customizable and not just the same generic shape as disposables.   The better they fit the less chance of any chafing.
  • Mama cloth users -- what is a good number to have? Do you wash them with your diapers, or separately?
  • The number really depends on: how long your flo is, how often you plan on laundering (during your cycle or at the end), how often you change them, and if you are going to use them exclusively.  A way to get an idea is to keep track of how many disposable pads you use for one cycle.  But that would be just a rough estimate b/c you may change cloth more or less often.

If you use exclusively cloth, have around a 5 day period, have an average flo, and want enough for your whole cycle- I would suggest 20-25.  That is just a ballpark because like I said it varies for everyone.

I wash mine all together at the end of my cycle.  I don't wash them with my diapers, although a lot of people do.  I do a rinse/drain/spin by themselves.  Then I add other laundry (underwear, socks, towels) and do a normal wash.
  • I have 7 overnights (probably too many), 3 light/medium (would like one or two more) and 7 or 8 pantyliners (I'd like to get more).
My first and last day are super light, so I usually go with the light/medium those days.  Otherwise I use a cup with a pantyliner as backup.  I use the overnights at night, sometimes with a cup, sometimes not.
I actually wear pantyliners pretty much every day, in case I sneeze (TMI).

I wash the pads with our kid's diapers, and pantyliners with our normal laundry.  I put them in a mesh "delicates" bag so they don't static cling themselves to the inside of my husband's jeans or something.
  • I have five pads and five liners that I've had since college, so like five years. I basically just use the liners and maybe one or two of the pads each period. I wash all together at the end of the period, in a lingerie bag, with whatever load of laundry happens to be going next, so either diapers or regular stuff. I have a pretty short, light period, but I can't imagine using 20+ pads! The ones I have have a few different folds so you can "freshen" them without changing them if that makes sense? Like three different layers that you can fold in each other and get a clean top layer. I really like them.

  • I really like my Talulah Beans, but I definitely prefer my diva cup. I've always hated tampons, but I really like the cup.

We're pretty green in general... I'm thinking my cup is probably what would freak people out the most, though.

I only suggested a ballpark of 20-25 if exclusively using pads, including pantyliners, and washing at the end of the cycle.  This obviously can vary from person to person.  I got that number partially from my personal stash (which is ever bigger) and from different blogs/vlogs I have read/seen.  If someone was just trying it out I would suggest starting small (around 6) and washing during their cycle.  But I don't think an end stash of 20-25 is a lot for someone who only uses pads IMO.  Just trying to be helpful...

That image totally cracked me up. I can totally picture mh strutting through the office with a cloth thong panty liner clinging to the back of his knee.

  • I use a combo of the cup and cloth. My cloth has linen which is what directly touches me and I LOVE how it feels. I will say that I reserved my cup only for the heaviest days because I found it slightly uncomfortable to remove. I imagine this will change for me post baby.

I have about 15 or so in my stash of cloth. I typically have one light day, 2 heavy days, a medium day, then a super light day.

  • My newest green thing is family cloth, although no one but dh and you guys know about it lol. Also, I made some cloth pads and as soon as I finished them I got pregnant and didn't have a period until last month (11 months pp) lol I was so excited to try them out after they sat useless for over a year. I somehow never thought to use them for post partum. I am excited to make more. I'm pretty much obsessed with all things cloth
  • I just hit 'ignore user' for one of the maples. Not sure which one it is, but now there's still only one on the board to me.

    Say What??? So. Not. Cool.
