Leg cramps vs. Blood clot

I'm 25 weeks pregnant and woke up yesterday morning with a real bad cramp in my leg. Yesterday my leg remained sore all day, and today it is very painful to flex my foot or to walk. I have factor v leiden so I am at risk for clotting, but at low enough risk that the Dr's decided not to put me on any blood thinners.

Have any of you had a blood clot in your leg? What did it feel like? Have any of you experienced a leg cramp that caused soreness for a day afterwards?

I've called my OB just waiting for a call back.

Re: Leg cramps vs. Blood clot

  • I'm glad you called your doc. In your situation you don't want to mess around!

A charley horse can cause soreness that lasts a few days-- but if your leg is swollen, discolored &/or warm in a certain spot, or if you have any shortness of breath or heart palpitations -- I'd go to the ER. Blood clots can be completely asymptomatic, too. So like I said - I'm glAd you called your doc.

  • It's to the point where I'm reluctant to put weight on it because it's so sore. I may just be a sissy though. None of my past cramps lasted like this though. They would come on and after the spasm I'm fine. It's always my left leg. I've been eating bananas and drinking lots of water.

It doesn't feel warm but I can't really see if it it discolored or swollen. Just painful to the touch.

I'm out of breath when I switch the laundry so I can't really go off that one lol.

I'm sure it's nothing but because of the disorder I think this was a good question for me to ask for future reference.

    Thank you :)
  • Blood clots can present differently in everyone. As pp said, some are even asymptomatic  It could be a clot or could be a muscle issue but you won't know until you get an ultrasound scan. Better to just go in if you're concerned

  • I would definitely call the doctor. Normal cramps don't make the leg difficult to touch afterwards.

  • I had already called the Dr. I'm still waiting on call back.
  • I've had leg cramps that have left me limping for a week before. So it could be that.

But it's good you've called your dr since you have a higher risk for clots.
  • I had a dvt from my calf right up into my groin. I went to the GP and physio for a week everyone thought it was muscular because my leg was not discoloured or hot or swollen or anything! I was a healthy fit 19 year old. I walked around in AGONY for over a week before the gp finally sent me for a sonar. I would definately get it checked out just incase!
