Footling breech

Hi everyone. I'm 35 weeks today and had an ultrasound this afternoon and my little one is in a footling breech position. Anyone with any info or suggestions? I'm freaking out a little because of what I've read online so far about the risks and the higher percentage of birth defects:(

Re: Footling breech

  • At your next dr appointment, talk to your doctor about their thoughts on the Webster Technique. This is something that helps babies move out of breech position. I wouldn't worry quite yet as there is still time for baby to flip, but this is an option!

  • Don't google it! There is too much bad info out there. 35 weeks is still early and I would consult your dr. As far as I know we haven't had many footling breech babies for Jan.
  • Thank you so much for your reply and advice. I will definitely ask my doctor about the Webster technique and will read about it right now. I'm hoping she does turn in time. Once again thank you:)
  • I've never heard of breech presentation having a higher chance of birth defects.  Our oldest was breech, never flipped, and is perfect.

  • I'm horrible I look up everything on Google and I always end up more worried and anxious than before I did my search:( Thank you for the advice I will definitely have a few questions for my doctor next week I'm sure he will calm my anxieties on the issue. Thanks again:)
  • Oh thank you so much for that reply. I'm giving myself an anxiety attack just reading and thinking about the birth defect percentage. I had never heard about it either so it caught me totally by surprise. Thank you so much for your answer.
  • I hope you get some good information and are able to relax about it. Good luck!
  • Thank you sooo much:)
  • One of my sisters was born breech (in the Frank position) and my mom had her vaginally (she was under 7lbs when she was born and it was her second baby) my sister definitely has no birth defects ( I also have never heard of the risk being higher with breech babies) and she even went on to skip a grade! So I wouldn't be too worried...talk to your doctor and plan for whatever labour option is safest for both you and the baby!
  • My babe was breech my last check up at 35 weeks. I don't see my doc again until Wednesday (I will be 37.5 weeks) and I'm anxious to see if baby has turned. I've never experienced breech babes... Mine have always been head down by now! I'm nervous that baby will not have turned by my next appt. time will tell. Eeekk. Good luck to you!!
  • Thank you so much jmcmoe:) I am so happy to hear your sister was in perfect health it definitely calms my nerves. WahooMom13 and jjcruiks thank you so much for your replies and well wishes even though we are in the same boat:/ Here's hoping our little ones flip soon so we can relax and enjoy our last few weeks of pregnancy:) Thanks again everyone. Good luck and God bless:)
  • My first was breech and I'm more than positive she stayed that way til right before I went into labor, she's fine, super sarcastic but she's fine.

  • Thank you so much for your reply andyswife342010 that is awesome to hear and extremely reassuring:)
  • I've read the same things about issues with breech babies, so I know the stress, but the chance that something is wrong is small, especially if you've had regular monitoring. My baby was breech until yesterday, I had a version and now he's not :) Fingers crossed that your baby flips around for you :)
  • My baby is breech at 37 weeks we are trying a version on Monday. As for the birth defects, it can be scary. I think something that sits in the back of my head is that baby's with birth defects are more likely to be breech not breech babies are more likely to have birth defects, does that make sense. I have had so many freaking ultrasounds this pregnancy I'm fairly certain something would have been picked up by this point. DH was breech and I have plenty of friends whose babies were breech and they are all perfectly fine. Don't worry unless the doctor is worried. The stat for breech babies is 3-5% so really 3 -5 babies out of a 100 isn't that low of a stat. Breathe I'm sure your baby is fine.

  • My brother was a footling breech, and they didn't know it until his foot started coming out first. He ended up a c-section, but completely healthy. Here's to hoping baby turns!

  • I didn't know what a footling breech was (although context clues gave me a pretty good idea), so I googled it. Read a pretty cool story about a footling breach that was born naturally at home. There were pictures too. It's not all scary stuff out there.
  • I'm 36 weeks, and baby is frank breech. Try the website spinning babies! I was really upset at first, I just really wanted a natural birth experience but I'm coming more to terms with a csection if baby doesn't flip after talking to people who went through the same thing. I'm going to a Webster certified chiro next week and am considering accupuncture, we've also tried light, ice/warmth, yoga poses. We aren't doing the version as my placenta is anterior and lots of risks. Good luck!
  • My girl was frank breech at 34 weeks but flipped after one chiropractic session at 35 weeks (though results can vary). I asked my OB the same thing about defects after stupidly consulting Dr. Google and he said it is far more likely to be a structural issue with the uterus (which is common) than due to a birth defect. More often than not, they are just more comfortable that way. He did mention that if the baby was footling breech I wouldn't want to wait the 18 hrs or whatever of labor before going to the hospital just in case of umbilical cord prolapse but that is also very uncommon. Might be worth asking your Dr about. I bet you will have a perfect baby but totally empathize with your concerns! Good luck!!!
  • I have a Frank breech baby right now. There are many things you can do to encourage them to flip. I'm doing Webster technique from a chiropractor (82% effective), acupuncture with moxibustion (also 80% effective), spinning babies exercises at home, and refraining from a reclining position. If he doesn't flip by 37/38 weeks, I will try an external version from on OB as a last resort. Good luck!

  • Just wanted to add that we have no idea why my 1st decided to be breech.  Baby #2 was head down and so is this one.  My oldest is just extremely opinionated and I guess she felt like she should be head up!  She'll be 4 in March and is already at Kindergarten level, so no birth defects there.

What PP said about babies with defects being breech vs. breech babies having defects makes a lot of sense.
