Does anyone else have any experience with this?? I have the Factor V Leiden Disorder (blood clotting is increased during pregnancy) and they have put me on daily Lovenox injections. This is my first pregnancy and I also I have never given myself shots. Can anyone else share their experiences?? Any weird side effects?? Thanks everyone!!

Re: Factor V Leiden Disorder & Lovenox Injections

  • Hi! You might ask this on the High Risk board (even if you aren't technically high risk). I thought I was going to need lovenox with this pregnancy and I got a lot of help over there.

  • Thanks!!! Still learning this app, I didn't even realize there was a high risk board. Thanks for your help!!! :)
  • Sure thing! Good luck!
  • @saragore83 There are a few of us on this baord with F5L.  I am on twice dialy injecttions of heparin.  We had a chioce between Lovenox and Heparin, and went with  heparin ONLY because it is WAY cheaper on our insurace plan.  The drugs work the same way... heparin is just 2 shots a day instead of one.  I have not experienced any side effects from my injections (and didn't when I was pregnant with my daughter either).  I get some bruising on my belly and the shot can burn sometimes, but nothing beyond that.  There is a weekly High Risk thread on this baord where the other F5Ls hang out.  Come join us!  Feel free to shoot me any questions... I will answer what i can and share my experiences.  Good luck!

  • Same here! FTM and first time ever having to give myself injections. Only found out about FVL a few weeks before I knew I was pregnant.

    I honestly thought it would be horrific but it's not bad AT ALL. I experience some minor bruising and the medication burns after injection but other than that, not bad at all. It just adds another doctor into the mix - I have my OB and monthly appoints with the high risk doctor for check ups.

    Any questions, let me know! Good luck! And welcome!! :)

  • I have twice daily injections of Lovenox due to having a large blood clot. I experience stinging after the injections but it's not as bad as I thought. You just do it because you need to!
  • I noticed the stinging too!!! Not pleasant!!! I am hoping as time passes it gets a little better. @asutherl‌ let me double check the dose when I get home. I have been asking my hubs to give me the shots, hehe... Lovenox isn't supposed to have any bad effects to the baby is it?? I always worry with anything like this!! :)

    @asutherl‌ - 40 mg a day
  • So while I don't have FVL i do give my shot once a month for B-12. I know its not the same drug at all but its quite easy to give the needle.. the first few times I did it i had a friend who is a nurse come over to make sure that I was doing everything properly. Now i could practically do it with my eyes closed.  Its scary to think that you are injecting your self every day but over time it does get better.

  • @asutherl‌ I have been dealing with a burning sensation after the injections. I have a constant burning that generally lasts 5-10 minutes. Is that normal? It's a tad painful but always goes away. It freaks me out a little!
  • I agree w/ PP to check on High Risk board.  There are lots of ladies on Lovenox, and they have a regular check-in if you're interested.

    This is my second pregnancy on Lovenox.  Other than the fact that you have to give yourself an injection every day, you probably wouldn't even know you were on it (no "weird" side effects).  You may bruise more easily, of course, since it is a blood thinner.  Hopefully you won't be too banged up during pregnancy.  I did have a really nasty fall at work a week ago and thought I was going to have a terrible bruise - I don't think it was any worse than it would have been if I hadn't been on Lovenox.

    PS, I'm also on baby aspirin.

    Thanks @asutherl‌ & @DahliaFlower‌. I have a post on the high risk board too, I came back to this one because I remember @asutherl‌ said she was a pharmacist, hehe!!! Yeah - the pain is only local to the injection area and eventually goes away :)
