1st Trimester

Multiple BFP's, then BFN at Doctors Office, CONFUSED, please HELP!

I was hoping to introduce myself and my due date today on this board, but instead I come with loads and loads of questions. Here is what has went down...

AF due Nov. 29

Squinter BFP on FRER Nov. 30 Lunch
DH approved line BFP Nov. 30 PM
Digital BFN FMU Dec. 1
2 Light but clearly positive FRER Dec. 1 afternoon
Digital Clearblue weeks estimator BFP FMU Dec. 2 1-2 weeks since ovulation

After all of those I made an appointment with my doctor. The only symptoms I had were my boobs had grown 2 cup sizes already and were soooo sore and some bloating and slight cramping every now and then.

So fast forward to today, Dec. 10 I go to the doctor. I get there with my DH SOOOOOO excited. Go back take the urine test only for them to call me back and say it was a BFN!!!! So DH and I are soo confused!! However I had drank 2 liters of water today. They do a blood test in which we will get the results in the morning.

So when I got home I took two more tests. Both FRER, one digital one normal. The digital one came back negative. The FRER is positive but still a light line. A very easy to see line, but it isn't dark like I would expect a test taken a week after my BFP's to be.While taking the tests I noticed some brown discharge and some more when I wiped. Im also having some slight cramping, but have had this off and on the whole time.

So what the HECK is going on? Am I pregnant? Was I pregnant? Am I having a miscarriage? Anyone with similar stories????

Re: Multiple BFP's, then BFN at Doctors Office, CONFUSED, please HELP!

  • The doctor said "If the blood test comes back negative then we are just going to assume that you read the results of your tests later than the allowed times and you will go get this prescription filled that will make you start your period"

That's all! Had no explanation at all as to why I would have positive on the digital.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. Do you know if your doc is doing a quantitative (will measure the actual quantity of hCG in your blood down to 0) or qualitative (a yes/no on pregnancy) blood test? If it's qualitative then if your numbers are below a certain threshold, even if you have hCG in your blood, then it will be negative.

All of that said, what you're going through sounds familiar to me and not, unfortunately, in a good way. Both of my chemical pregnancies I was fine for roughly a week/10 days (most chemicals happen more quickly than that, but mine did not) and then started spotting brown and not being able to turn tests because my levels were going back down.  Not being able to turn the digital may mean that your levels have gone below what's needed to turn it.

I'm surprised that your doctor would rather just mark you down as not having been pregnant and want to prescribe you something to start your period (I assume Provera or similar) than entertain the idea of a chemical pregnancy. I would bring that up. Honestly, if that's what your doctor said, I'd find another doctor in the future.

  • Thanks divinemsbee for sharing with me! I had read that chemical pregnancies were a lot shorter so I kind of threw that out, but looks like I shouldn't have.

She didn't tell me exactly. She said "they would see if I was pregnant and see how pregnant I was" so hopefully that means
    quantitative.

DH and I were just so shocked by the news we went blank when it came to asking intelligent questions. I just sat there confused.

At this point I am just seeking answers. It sucks if it didn't stick, I just want to know why and whats going on, ya know!

Ah I'm sorry. It's not nice being in limbo, unfortunately the only way to know for sure is via a blood test. I had a siminlar situation a few years ago. My home test were positive, when I went to the doctors to confirm, there test came back negative, they did a blood test, which indeed confirmed I was pregnant. Waiting and wondering isn't nice, all you want is answers either way. Good luck! Keep us posted.
  • I'm glad to hear a good outcome from this messed up situation! I am preparing for the worst. My boobs are still sore but thats like the only symptom I have had

Btw I am getting a new doctor! As much as I love the support and answers I am getting here, my doctor should have informed me of all of this in her office yesterday!!!

I had 2 chemical pregnancies before this one.  Your story sounds similar to mine.  To put it the best way it sucks. I got all excited thinking I was pregnant and then went to the doc to find out I wasn't anymore.  If in fact this is the case with you there is no need to worry.  With a chemical pregnancy you usually will get your period with-in a few days and you can go on with TTC the way you were before.  I had one in apr and then got my BFP in june so there is really no waiting period or anything like that.  I've said before CP's are more common than we think.  Most people have them and never even realize.  The only reason we do is because we are TTC. For others their period is just a few days late and they never knew. Good Luck!

If it is a chemical, you'll probably start a period-like bleed within the next few days. With my first one I spotted brown for almost a week first, with my second it was just a day or so. It might be a little heavier than your regular period, but not by much (at least mine weren't, but bodies are different). With my first my doctor asked that we not TTC again until after my next full period. With my second we were given the go-ahead right away. Neither messed up my cycles by much, so my period showed up right around when it would have anyway.

I hope that things work out for you, though.

What you are describing sounds like my chemical pregnancy/ very early miscarriage (5w 1d).

A lot of doctors discount CPs and very early miscarriages.  My old OB referred to my CP as a "foul tip" (as in the baseball term).  You can be sure I have a new doctor now.

Sorry you have to go through this.

This is disgusting I would have punched him in the face. Some people just have no compassion.

  • I just went through the same. I had a CP two days ago (4 weeks 3 days).
  • Gosh I hate all of you went through this as well. But thank you SOOOO MUCH for commenting. It has made me feel lots better.

I ended up calling the doctors office. After a 20 minuet wait I spoke with the lab and they said my results were on the doctors desk for them to call me and explain what would happen next.

Doctor still hasn't called, but the lab tech was kind enough to let me know my betas were only 10 :( so either super early pregnancy or chemical....obviously chemical knowing the back story.

I'm now cramping soooo bad and the brown discharge has turned to blood. :(
Weird though, it is more orange than red...thats never happened to me before. So since my doctor sucks and wont talk to me yet, I am coming back to you guys with questions. Can I put in a tampon? Can I take meds to help with the cramps?

  • Do not use a tampon. At all for any bleeding you experience from this. Using them ups the chance of infection. I find that the Always Infinity pads are really pretty comfortable. You probably also will want to lay off of sex (which you probably won't be in the mood for anyway) or orgasms at least until the bleeding stops. Take whatever you need to help with cramps, hopefully if they get bad you can get your doc to call something in, but I find Pamprin or Motrin can help a lot. I wouldn't take aspirin.

I'm really surprised, I guess, that your doctor's office didn't bring any of this up as a possibility or give you any guidance. It makes me mad for you. But I hope that the advice here helps and that you get to talk to your doc soon.

  • Following up!

2nd blood test Friday came back completely negative. So it was chemical.

I was very disappointed. Now I am struggling if I want to start back on BC and join this weight loss program my mom has been apart of (I have about 20-30 pounds I should really lose). They use addipex so def dont want to TTC with that. Or if I was to just continue working out and eating right and see if I can drop weight myself while TTC.

I am really scared I am going to get pregnant with another chemical again. :( Anyone have multiple chemicals?

PS I have an appointment with a new doctor Jan. 25!

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I know how much it sux.  Don't blame yourself and def don't blame your weight.  You didn't do anything wrong.  Good Luck in whatever you decide you want to do.

ETA: yes I had 2 CP's before this pregnancy.  My doc said that there was nothing abnormal about the situation however.  I had one in april and got my BFP for this pregnancy in june.  Although I've had some health complications on my end so far my little guy snug as a bug in there. This time around I did not POAS until after AF was due.  It was super hard to hold back but I didn't want the disappointment again.

  • I had a chemical in august and we got our bfp in October. We really timed bd well in September but nothing. I think the body just needs some time to recover. Sorry for your loss, chemicals are hard because your a bit hormonal and wondering if you were even pregnant which made me wonder if I even had the right to be so sad. Fx for you!
