High-Risk Pregnancy

Pre-Eclampsia questions

I am about to be 28 weeks, and my blood pressure is higher than normal. My booking bp at 8 weeks was 90/50. Ever since 14 weeks, it has been around 118/68. A couple days ago, I got a home reading of 116/77. The 77 was pretty high for me and I had been having headaches a lot, so I went to the dr. My BP never got that high there. 118/64. So I guess my question is, is this an issue being I previously had low blood pressure? I had blood work done and did a urine sample, no protein or other signs of pre-e. Just a lot of headaches, nose bleeds, and feeling more dizzy lately. No swelling. My dr said it still has to get to 140/90 to be a problem but then a midwife told me otherwise. Which is it? Just don't want to go undiagnosed and have problems!!

Re: Pre-Eclampsia questions

  • I don't have any experience with Pre-E, but those numbers actually sounds good to me. And mine are around those with each pregnancy (I am pregnant with #4). I read that when you are pregnant that your numbers will actually go up somewhat.
Could your headaches/nosebleeds just be from sinuses? I had horrible headaches from early on until around 30 weeks with each of my girls.

  • That's what the dr said. The numbers can go up from extra blood flow, but now of course I am all freaked out bc the midwife told me my baseline mattered. I guess I will just monitor. I do have sinus problems and pain in my cheeks/nasal bone. Just hoping my numbers will stay put and not continue to climb. :) Pregnancy is stressful!
  • It IS stressful. Hang in there.

  • Those numbers are good! I would try not to worry about it. Your doc is right...concerns start at 140/90 and then they monitor you to see if the BP will go down. If not..then it is a concern. Also...sometimes we can just get hypertension with having preeclampsia.

I would keep any eye on it to see if it keeps climbing. Try rest and lots of water as well.
  • I agree with the 140/90 numbers. Those are typically the magic numbers of hypertension- regardless of where your BP typically lies.  You can also just have a higher BP when pregnant w/o pre-e.  My pressure ON meds when I was pregnant hovered between 140/150 over 80/90 and they did c/s @ 35 weeks when I hit 180/110 and was spilling protein and my DD had stopped growing (IUGR).

I wouldn't worry much with those BP numbers. Those are pretty good numbers, especially since you're not spilling protein. If your DR isn't concerned, I wouldn't be.

This numbers look good. I was induced with DS for pre-e. My bp the day I was induced was 170/100 ish. 140/90 is the baseline to become concerned but a lot more than high readings go into a pre-e diagnosis. High bp readings also don't guarantee pre-eclampsia. Many women have gestational hypertension. It is very stressful but like PP said, if you're doctor isn't worried, try not to worry either!
