What are your thoughts...Names too similar?

Hello! I am a long time lurker. We have a DS, Charles Edward (goes by Charlie) who is 2 and are having a girl at the end of March. Our last name sounds like Mesik.

The front runner right now is Amelia, nn Millie. We are unsure about a middle name but like Jane.

Other names we like: Clara, Ruby, Cora, Laurel, Paige, Audrey, Alice, June.

Do you think having two kids with their nicknames ending in "ie" is weird? I want the names to coordinate but not be too similar. Please let me know your thoughts, or any name combos you like, or how the names sound with our last name.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Edited for typo!

Re: What are your thoughts...Names too similar?

  • I don't think it's too matchy since their actual first names are noticeably different. I don't really consider nicknames when deciding baby names but that could be because I never had a nickname growing up.

  • I don't think they're too matchy at all. Their formal names would be vastly different anyway. I love your choices!

  • The formal names are not matchy at all and I don't see an issue with the nns both ending in -ie. Amelia is lovely, but I prefer Clara, Ruby or June.

  • I think they're totally fine, especially since their full names are obviously not matchy as pp pointed out. Charles and Amelia is a great sibset!!!
  • I don't think they're too matchy! They're both great names and sound great together!

  • I love Amelia.  And Charles and Amelia sound lovely together.  Personally though I wouldn't want a "Charlie" and a "Millie."  Just like I wouldn't do Molly and Walter (Molly and Wally) or Owen and Evan.  But I also acknowledge I'm very picky about sibling names.

  • Most names' diminutives are an -ie sound so it is extremely hard to avoid the NNs having a similar ending. I try to focus on the full names not having the same beginning and ending sounds. Currently none of mine use NNs that have the same ending, but at some point they could want to go by Teddy, Frankie, and Maggie. It just can't be helped most of the time, especially the more kids you have.

I think Charles and Amelia are great together. Love Millie as a NN. Also like Audrey and Alice from your list with Charles/Charlie.

  • I like Charles and Amelia together. The nicknames being somewhat similar wouldn't bother me.

From your other names Alice is my favorite. It's me DDs name so I'm slightly bias :)
  • I think it's fine and all the middle name options are great. I'd pick Jane.
