Chiming for another "babies NEED to suck". Seriously, it's a hard wired mechanism for safety and comfort. Babies are meant to pacify themselves at mama's breast... But that doesn't exactly work for moms who bottle feed, or... y'know... moms that occasionally need a break from having their boobs sucked on. My first two boys refused the pacifier and never found their this so it was all on me to satisfy that need... which was fine, but this little girl seems more willing to take a pacifier (at least from her dad) and sometimes it's greatly appreciated.
Anyone have a LO that is diagnosed with Reflux and on meds?
DD's one month appt is today and I am going to ask about this. I am 95% sure she has a mild case but hate to put her on meds if she doesn't really need them. Here are her "symptoms"
1. She spits up anytime she is put flat on her back for more than 10mins even if it has been hours since she ate.
2. We have to keep her completely upright until she falls asleep after eating or she will spit up even slightly reclined in the swing, car seat, bouncy chair, etc she throws up.
3. She constantly has the hiccups
4. She is inconsolably unhappy after eating for like 15-20mins EVERY time she eats (basically the only time she cries)
5. She has a ton of wet burbs that sound like she is spitting up and swallowing it again.
Does this sound like Reflux to those of you with experience with it?
Anyone else go through a period of fussiness daily?? My lo seems to be fussy at night sometimes for a couple hrs straight anf she is inconsolable. It happened last night from 9-11:30. I tried feeding her, walking, swaddling, rocking, everything. She finally fell asleep. We werw both crying.
@jillybean7582 Avery has reflux and is currently on meds. She was having weight issues and the meds have helped tremendously. Definitely ask your doctor about it, it sounds like something could be up.
@jessa1228 We are only planning to use a pacifier at night for the purpose of reducing SIDS. We are trying to start that now, at three weeks. EBF is already well established. We are avoiding pacifier use during the day because 1) we want to be able to calm her without devices we might forget or lose (would hate to be out without a paci when she's dependent on one), 2) we've heard horror stories of weaning off, 3) we think it's often given in place of something they really need (e.g., food, warmth, changing), and 4) we just think it looks pathetic. It's another of those hotly debated things where you need to just do what's right for your baby and your family .
This whole reply just rubbed me the wrong way, especially the "pathetic" comment.
*SNIP*
If you don't know to take care of your child's basic needs before giving a pacifier that is a parenting issue not a pacifier issue.
To each and there own yes, but tossing that in after a extremely judgmental reply is a huge contradiction.
When will babies start smiling at you? I've gotten a couple of random smiles from LO, but they're not really directed at me just kinda happen.
I think it's different for every baby. There's an app called wonder weeks that usually tells about development based on the baby's due date and not his/her actual birthday to give you a more realistic view of when things will start developing
Seems like I am an app promoter the past few days ha ha
Speaking of wonder weeks... I initially plugged in EDD as prompted, but she's actually more aligned with the leaps described with her actual birth date (3.5 wks early). Not really a question. Not really informative. Guess this really could've gone in the random thread, eh?
The only time my LO has been inconsolable was at 18 hours old in the hospital. I offered him a paci and he fell asleep within seconds. Don't knock the paci!!
And my son does NOT look pathetic with his- he looks cute. He's five weeks old FFS.

This is pretty much the definition of my baby. Every night same time crying and inconsolable. I downloaded a white noise app on my phone that's been helping 90 percent of the time.
@jillybean7582 sometimes it doesn't mess with their weight and just causes discomfort/pain. It could be a number of things though, you're right! I do hope the meds help good luck and keep us posted!
How do we tell that LO is ready to go up a diaper size? She's using the Pampers Swaddlers Newborn size. Trying to figure out if I should continue buying this size on my auto shipment.
We went from wondering if the newborn size was getting too small to knowing so over the course of a weekend it seemed! We finished the last box we had on hand and never looked back. Size one looked huge in comparison, but only for a couple of days. Her poops would have never been contained in the newborn sized ones after she weighed close to 9lbs.
eta: luvs seem to run a little smaller if you need an in-between diaper... ...but they didn't work for us after being spoiled by pampers swaddlers sensitive; we opted to have her wear a slightly too-big diaper for a couple of days instead.
@Maelara, she has been gaining weight like a champ which is the one reason I am hesitant on if it is reflux or maybe more something in my diet?
Doctor gave us medicine so we shall see if it helps.
Jacob has reflux and is on Meds as of recent. He had all the signs of reflux but has had no trouble gaining weight (at 6 weeks he is up 4 pounds from birth weight & pedi said anything from 3-5 pounds gained is normal for his age) hope the Meds help your LO. It's worked wonders for us already and it's only been a few doses!
How do you get poo out of something you can't get in the washer or sink ?
Last night someone decided up show us his size 1 diapers were too small by filling his rock n play with poop. I removed the liner but there are those two straps/buckle parts that should go around baby and attach to the base thatare quite gross. I have no idea how to tackle that.
Is it one that vibrates, or one of the basic ones? Mine is basic, I've hosed it down in the shower with OxiClean before. If it is one of the vibrating ones, you could try just spot-cleaning it with OxiClean on a rag.

Honestly I ran out or newborn sized ones and grabbed a size one that I already had and was shocked that it wasn't ginormous.
How much does your LO weigh? You'll probably be surprised to find out they ready fit!

I tried to stick with the newborns til I had them all used up....but I just couldn't do it. They were leaving marks on his legs and I just felt like I was squishing him. The size 1 seems big on him, but nothing has leaked out so far and he seems much more comfy in them. I would say try some 1's and if they seem too big, only then would I buy more newborns.

We just opened a box of 128... grrr. I have some size ones, so could give those a try. We've been experiencing some poop blowouts here. She mainly stools in the evenings, so maybe we could use the bigger size then?
Target should let me exchange unopened boxes for a larger size, right?
I have been EBF and it has been going very well. This week I tried pumping for the first time. I have now pumped twice and each time I have gotten very little (less than an ounce). It seems like the foremilk comes out but not the hind milk. I do not feel anywhere close to empty when I am done. Will this improve with time? What can I do to pump more? It would be nice to build a stash. At the very least, I will need to be able to pump enough when I go back to work.

I have already pumped more than I ever want to in my life (I freaking hate pumping). The best thing I have found is using a hands free bra and then massaging my breasts while I pump. For me it makes a huge difference. Also if you can pump around LO or look at pictures/videos of baby while you pump it can increase the amount you get.

@bloomraiser I had no idea that something as simple as distraction could result in more output! I'm bad about that..I watch it like a hawk. Def giving that a try!

Thanks @Econosaurus , @dmo1371 and @bloomraiser on the pumping advice. I have tried some massage, but I guess could do more. I try not to watch the bottles, but I am bad about that. When I pumped this morning LO was next to me on the couch, so I don't think looking at pictures of him would do much.
My boobs don't ever leak, not even when LO is crying. I will keep trying with the pump - I really don't want to switch to formula when I go back to work.

I actually accidentally used ones during her first few days, and had no accidents. It was just meconium then, though.
