How far along? I am 28 weeks and 3 days
GD treatment or regimen? diet and exercise
How are you feeling? Fine I guess. Been really tired which usually tells me something is too high. I'm also very annoyed with the pregnant aid at work who also has GD but won't do what shes suppose to. Taking care of your self because of the diabetes sucks but we all do it to take care of our Lo's. How someone can be so selfish to not to even try is beyond me.
Any updates? Not really. I don't see my doctor until tomorrow. After that I start going every two weeks. Sucks being due the last day of the month i feel so behind everyone else.
Qotw: What snacks are working for you?
Generally snacks that I have are really boring. I realized I make everything I eat into a dip. My fruit snack of the day will usually be an apple with peanut butter or almond butter, and I just dip my apple slices into it. Also I'll eat any veggie raw as long as I can dip it in either hummus or plain yogurt. Pepperoni and a cheese stick work for me also, but I try that because so far i don't really get heart burn.
If I want something sweet I do that apple with a mug of herbal tea to make the cravings satisfied. If I'm still hungry after these snacks then I eat a handful of nuts of some kind. Usually almonds or walnuts or my go to.

    GD treatment or regimen?
Glyburide - half pill at bedtime - careful about what I eat - trying to keep it lower carbs
    How are you feeling?
ok, tired, but that might have more to do with it being the last week of the semester.  GD wise I'm cautiously optimistic at the same time as being upset.  Optimistic because I am loosing weight again, which I hope means that Reid isn't growing as fast anymore. Upset about the fact that just because I am on the glyburide I might not be able to be seen by the midwives anymore. I really want to try and avoid going through an epidural again this time, and I just feel like I have a better chance of that with the midwives than I do with the OBs. Hoping that my appointment at the OB next week I can use my numbers as well as weight loss as proof that I am able to control it and should be ok with the MW.
    Any updates?
None so far - still don't know who is supposed to be following me and keeping track of how this is going. I might just have to call the DR at MFM to see what she says.
Qotw: What snacks are working for you?
the packages of RITZ peanut butter crackers.  yes the crackers are carbs, but the PB seems to be enough protein to counteract that. I am finding that often my sugar is even lower after I eat them than it was prior.

I never thought of eating peanut butter crackers. Now I can actually hit up the vending machine at work.

I'm hoping some weight loss and then maintaining weight is a good sign to. This is what I experienced since my last OB visit. Yesterday I weighed myself and I gained 1 LB in a month. I'm going to hope thats good for now hitting 3rd trimster.

  • How far along? 31 weeks

GD treatment or regimen? I am actually still waiting for them to get back to me. I talked to them the Tuesday before thanksgiving but they told me since my insurance is out of state it will take 15 days. At least my husband is weird and has two testers at home. This morning it was 95.

How are you feeling? Pretty cool. Just tired.
Any updates? Have my next ob appt.

Wednesday so I can show her the results so far.

Qotw: What snacks are working for you? I have been doing a lot of paleo recipes. I really don't do many grains. If I do eat carbs I try to get it from fruits and veggies. I have been able to treat myself to a latte or a piece of dark chocolate with still having my blood sugar in the 80's and 90's so that makes me happy. If I do have carbs I just always make sure to pair it with healthy fats and protein and it is seeming to work out. Glad I have had this time to experiment before having to report to the doctor.
  • @paleomamaWhat kind of dark chocolate do you eat or what brand?

I tried to buy some for when I have cravings but I couldn't figure out which would be best so I got so over whelmed I just left and cried in my car.

  • 29 weeks and 2 days

Doing alright, def in the tired part of the pregnancy. Going to kinda reign in my experimenting as I don't want them to put me on anything before meals. Still trying to see if I can get my fasting number under control but meh, I guess I'm not as worried about that.

My apt on Friday will be interesting. I'm doing a vba2c and I have been looking into this for years (if anyone needs resources I have plenty!) I know countless women who've vbac'd with gd, but I have a feeling my doc is going to try and pull the bait and switch on me. Which just means I'll be looking into a dif doc! It's actually against acog guidelines to do a c section or early induction for suspected large baby. I've gained a total of 8lbs this pregnancy and nothing in the last two weeks, so I'm not really concerned about his size. I've been going back and forth on whether or not I'm going to agree to bi weekly ultrasounds, as second and especially third trimester ones can vary by 2lbs. So we shall see!

  • @psychobutthead‌ I found a whole foods brand that I like. It is 72%, it says 3 squares as a serving but I only do one. I put a little almond butter on it sometimes. I always pair some strawberries and blueberries on the side with a cup of chamomile tea. It's a nice treat.
  • OK so what is everyone else eating on a daily basis? Whats a typical day of food?
I just feel like 6 small meals a day isn't enough no matter how much protein I pair it with.

I keep trying to tell my self its in my head but I'm doubting it. I even try to drink water in case I'm really just thirsty and not hungry.
So what is everyone else eating so I have an idea if I'm not eating enough or too much.

For me a typical day is like this, this is yesterday btw..

    Breakfast
oatmeal with strawberries and almonds. 1 cup of coffee with 2 packs stivia and peppermint sugar free creamer.

    morning snack
minnie peppers and sugar snap peas with plain yogurt and coconut water

    lunch
whole grain spaghetti with sauce with sausage and spinach in it with diet coke

    afternoon snack
mozerella cheese stick, minnie peppers with hummus

    Dinner
    turkey chili

    Night snack
herbal tea with 2 stivia packs and an apple with peanut butter.

  • How far along?

    30 wks 1 day
    GD treatment or regimen?

Test 4x a day and diet (I'm a guinea pig and get a very strange diet).  Due to my digestive issues I actually have the opposite of most GD diets.  I'm on a low fiber diet.  I can have white bread and pasta.  I'm already digesting everything very slowly so if I added whole grain and fiber I would be digesting my breakfast 2 days from now. It's going to be interesting.
    How are you feeling?

Tired and super confused.  Not used to having to look at the back of everything and nutritional values. I'm getting super frustrated that the want me to test 1 hr after meals and I keep telling them that 2 hrs would be better due to my digestion.  My numbers have been high last night and this morning and sure enough tested and hour and a half after lunch and it was perfect.  Think I may ask them to switch.
    Any updates?

Went yesterday and there is a chance I would have to on insulin eventually because of my fasting numbers.  I'm not that upset because I already give myself shots in my thighs for allergies so it would be the same.  The insulin may even be a bit easier as it is a small 4mm needle and I use a pretty big 8mm and thick serum for allergies.  That shit burns and I get super sore and swollen from them.
Qotw: What snacks are working for you?

Still have to try and see.  When for our childbirth class the other night and it was at destination maternity.  The had a bunch of free mini luna bars.  Stole a shot load of Chocolate peppermint stick ones.  They only have 12g carbs and 6g protien.  Dietician said they could work real well and they definitely satisfy my sweet tooth.  Got another class on wed night gonna bring a bag to stock up.  HEHEHEHE

  • How far along?
    30 weeks and 5 days.

    GD treatment or regimen?
I test my sugars 4x a day -- fasting and after each meal. I'm basically eating normally, but trying to opt for fewer carbs. I eat out a lot, so I just try to choose the tastiest-sounding low-carb thing on the menu.

The main thing though that I think of as my "treatment" though is that I'm now pretty regularly exercising: 5 min jogging after every meal (so ideally 15 min of jogging a day), circuit training at the gym 2-3x a week, and pregnancy yoga 1x a week. My numbers come back on the low end of normal after exercise, so I'm leaning on it as my crutch to let me eat normal-ish food.

    How are you feeling?
Kinda good, actually! A little light-headed earlier in the week after a jog, so my husband had me lay down and he brought me cookies. Which... should be a regular practice anyway, right?!

    Any updates?
I've lost a few pounds and my bump has seemed to flatten a teeny bit. I'm not concerned about the baby, because I can feel her in there every day, but it's kinda interesting to see that happening after only a couple of weeks. I honestly do miss real treats and indulging, but it's reassuring to know that it doesn't take THAT much work to regulate my levels at this point. I'm definitely keeping in mind my OB's warning though that things can change (for the worse) as the pregnancy progresses more and more.

Qotw: What snacks are working for you?
Apple slices with peanut butter, beef jerky, half-a-slice of whole wheat English muffin with either avocado mash (w/salt, pepper, lemon juice, and garlic powder) on it or egg salad on it. At night, I'm with @psychobutthead -- a mug of peppermint tea with a Splenda in it.

Oh, and my go-to breakfast, if anyone's looking still, is this: a cup of cottage cheese (I don't skimp on that!) with a tablespoon of applesauce and a few shakes of cinnamon mixed in. Easy to prep too, which is key for me pre-coffee!

  • Breakfast : eggs with sausage, bacon or ham, hash Browns maybe or toast. Water with wylers light pack (I hate crystal light).

Morning snack: trail mix with water and wylers light.

Lunch: leftovers or a salad with meat, fruit cup and water with wylers light.

Afternoon snack: fruit or veggie with a dip or a cereal bar.

Dinner: chicken or beef with mashed potatoes or rice (checking my serving size) and a large helping of some type of green veggie.

Before bed snack : dark chocolate Hershey kisses or one cookie.

All meals are with water and wylers light packet. It's the only way I can tolerate that much water.

  • How far along?
    30 weeks

    GD treatment or regimen?
    Diet and monitoring.

    How are you feeling?
Right now, not too bad, since I just had breakfast half an hour ago. Ask again in a couple hours when I enter a the first phase of tiredness/hunger. :p

    Any updates?
My next appointment is this Friday. I'm on a bi-weekly schedule with the dietitian.  I notice that most of you gals are allowed to take your blood check 2 hours after a meal. I only peak within the window 1-1.25 Hrs (not the case at my GD test though, haha), so that's when I have to do my poking unless it's a long meal then I do it at the 2hr mark. It's a bit frustrating to me, I've been off target a handful of times in the last 2 weeks whenever I have carbs. I could go from 70 before meal to 165 within an hour, then back to 80 at 2 hr. I hope these rollercoaster rides don't mean I'm not in control.

Qotw: What snacks are working for you?
I guess I haven't been as creative as some of you lot. My snacks are:
    - peppers and carrot with hummus
    - half a whole grain pocket with natural peanut butter and no sugar jam
    - string cheese
    - mixed nuts
    - clif protein bar (White chocolate macadamia nut ones are pretty good, I only eat 2/3 of a one bar at a time and pair it up with something else)
    - 6oz Non-fat plain Greek yogurt from Fage or Costco with berries mixed in.
    - seaweed
    - taco meat (beef or chicken) & salsa wrapped in lettuce leaves
    - homemade 4 beans salad marinated in splenda and vinegar.

  • Here's my typical weekday:

    Breakfast:
    - Whole grain English muffin with egg, cheese and turkey sausage patty or ham

Swim for 30-40 mins, then test glucose -- perfect every time!

    Morning snack:
    - 2oz of mixed nuts

    Lunch:
    - 3-5oz of meat (chicken breast usually, or beef)
    - 1.5 cups of greens (roasted broccoli, carrots, Brussels Sprouts).
    - 3/4 cups of berries
    - 1 small mandarin or half an apple

Walk for 20-30 mins after lunch.

    Afternoon snack:
    - half a bell pepper + 6 piece of baby carrots with hummus dip
    - a protein bar if I need a 2nd snack (or 3oz non fat yogurt mixed with 1/2 cup berries and 2tbsp sliced almonds)
    - mixed nuts and string cheese on standby just in case I feel hungry.

    Dinner:
    - 3oz of meat
    - some sort of Asian greens stir fry or a salad
    - a soup: seaweed tofu soup, or some sort of beans & vegetable soup 1 cup
    - 1 cup of plain soymilk (the ones from Asian grocery stores have 3g of carbs in 1 cup!)
    - half an apple

I'm skipping rice and pasta entirely cos I really don't do so hot with them, and also because I feel fruits are more nutritious than grains, so I'm prioritizing them whenever I can.

    ----
The info pack from my dietitian says don't use stevia, the sugar substitute, because it's relatively new and not enough research is conducted on it, so I only use splenda if I need to sweeten something up.

My dieticians pack said sugar substitutes where fine but it didn't say specifically which where. When I asked her about stevia and splenda she said both where fine. Maybe I should just fully switch.
I only use them in my coffee and tea.

Also how do you have so much energy to exercise so much?

I'm so tired when I get off work exercise is the last thing i do.

But I guess all the walking and moving I do during the day helps my sugar numbers. At least thats the theory I'm going with.

  • @psychobutthead - I only swim/walk after eating, that's just about the only time I feel energetic. I'd like to be more consistent about my brisk walks after dinner too, but I live in WA, it's rainy most nights and DH doesn't want to go with me. I am a bit worried about not being able to do as much in the next month as our bodies start to somewhat fall apart! I've seen how exercise really helps with my glucose level.

Regarding stevia, the info pack doesn't say it's harmful and did mention some of its products are FDA approved. I'm erring on the safe side and not trying it at all. Equal has aspartame, sweet n low is saccharin based, so both are no-go. Splenda has sucralose and that's fine.

  • Hi everyone!

How far along? 28 weeks and 4 days

GD treatment or regimen? monitoring and diet -- This was day two of monitoring. A bit higher desired. It had been ten hours since my night time snack, and I was super starving. So that fasting number will be interesting to watch.

How are you feeling? Physically I'm feeling fine. Some fatigue -- but I think that's because I haven't been sleeping well. The nurse wants me to spend this week eating as I normally would and monitoring. But I am feeling overwhelmed about food choices (I think I generally eat healthfully, but there's so much pressure now!). And I think I am more of a grazer than the testing schedule suggests, so I have some anxiety about when I can eat and having to wait to eat even if I am hungry. I also know I need to not have an emotional response linked to the number that shoes up on the glucose meter. That will take some practice.

Any updates? It's all new. So nothing specific.

Qotw: small apple and cheese; veggies and hummus. Thanks for all of your snack and meal suggestions!
  • What chocolate is it that you're eating?

Maybe I bought a crappy brand? I don't know but it tastes horrible.

Then again I lived near Hershey Pa growing up so all chocolate I'm us to is the super sweet milk chocolate of the gods.

It's an acquired taste. Definitely always go for the solid thin bars (which have little squares called demitasse). Lindt makes some good chocolate. I would start with a lower percentage & work your way up.

Working for Godiva for 2/1/2 years made me a chocolate snob! Haha. I can't eat plain Hershey, grosses me out that they have wax in their chocolate (as a preservative).
  • I never liked dark chocolate or Godiva chocolate before being pregnancy.
Haha I guess I'm your exact opposite when it comes to chocolate.

  • @psychobutthead I'm not a dark chocolate fan either.  I find it to strong and not as sweet.  To me its almost like eating coffee grounds.  I do like it in the thinner bars and my parents brought me back some from germany that I eat in moderation that is outta this world!!!

  • I love dark chocolate but I can totally see the coffee ground thing.  I even like the 90% dark...it's just so dang chocolatey.

I think I said this when I dropped in here once before, but I passed my 3 hour test but am still lurking because I'm trying to be careful with my diet anyway and can always use ideas and motivation.  Has anyone tried quest protein bars?  They're whey protein based, so you have to be able to tolerate dairy, but they have saved me from my sweet tooth SO MANY TIMES.  20g protein in most flavors, 17g fiber, and seriously delicious.  Lots of dessert-like flavors and they make a great, filling snack.  I'm not a fan of most bars, but these are good.  It's cheaper to buy them online, but GNC sells them too, and a few grocery stores around here do.  You can even throw them in the microwave for a few seconds, or under the broiler if you watch closely.

  • @psychobutthead - aww, did the OB offer any advice to help you improve?  LO is still OK, right?

I've been meaning to ask, do any of your OBs do anything special to check the LO now that we're diagnosed with GD?  I read that mine would do some non stress testing if meds are needed. I'm just curious how they'd size our LOs esp for mamas that are losing weight with their new diets.

  • I get an anatomy scan everytime I go into my specialist now. @PikoPiko‌
  • @pikopiko she had none!

She didn't give me any guidelines one what is too low and what it should be. How much I should increase my food or what areas I should even keep!

SHe didn't even want to see my food journal that she insisted I start in the first place.

So why am I even being labeled diabetic if all my stuff is now too low because I'm doing what they said?

I'm doing everything they said to a T and now its everythings too low, you're not eating enough.

If thats the case why are they cot considering put me on insulin so I can increase my food? Because when my sugar gets to high I feel sick. When its too low I feel sick and they know this. So how can I increase it and increase my sugar without feeling sick?

  • I was already high risk so nothing new happening with me since the diagnosis. I will begin non stress testing next week though , but that's just because it's routine during this time for the twins, not because of my GD.

  • Do you gals use an app to track your levels and food intake? Seems like it would make keeping track easier.

  • I have some templates that the doc gave me to fill out with my BG and food info daily. When I see the dietitian, she takes my glucose meter and downloads the results. On my meter I can see all my readings to date, so I don't really need an app to manage my numbers.

@psychobutthead‌, weird she didn't give you targets. I had some low fasting numbers before and was told to stay within 70-90. My after meal targets are 1 hr: below 130, 2 hr: below 120. I wonder if these sound familiar to you guys too. At any point of the day if I feel really crappy, I'm supposed to check for low glucose. If it's below 70, I need to go chomp on 15g of carbs right away and retest in 15 mins.
