Trouble TTC

Anyone avoid HPTs and instead wait for the nurse to call with results from the blood test?

Whenever I go in for my beta the nurses and receptionists always say things like "good luck!!!" and "fingers crossed!!" and even though I know they're trying to be nice, it's always annoyed me because the blood test is usually 15dpiui and by that point I already know the cycle didn't work. I've always thought to myself "why does everyone act like there is suspense at this point in the cycle - is there ANYONE who actually waits for the blood test??" I always had taken an HPT (or three) by that point - both because I was anxious to know but also because I hate having false hope.

But then... last cycle when the HPT was negative I was SO upset. Upset enough that I decided I preferred false misguided hope to being that upset, so now I'm considering waiting for the beta. I know I'm just postponing the upset - but I'm hoping if I wait longer to test, I'll get over it faster because a new cycle will be starting. We'll see how that works out.

Anyway I'm curious how many of you resist using HPTs and instead wait for the results of the blood test??

Married in 2011, NTNP until early 2012, TTC since early 2012

My husband was diagnosed with state IV colon cancer in 2009. Surgery and six rounds of chemo left him in remission (yay!) but with low testosterone. He took Androgel for two years starting in Jan 2011.
-SA in Jan 2013: big fat zero; stopped Androgel
-varicocelectomy in June 2013
-SA in Dec 2013: 23mil/ml, really low morph
-SA in March 2014: Count doubled! Morphology apparently no longer an issue.

Treatments:
April 2014: hysteroscopy
June 2014: TI (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel: 2 folliclces) = BFN
July 2014: IUI#1 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1 follicle, 23mil post-wash) = BFN
August 2014: IUI#2 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1 follicle, 43mil post-wash) = BFN
September 2014: IUI#3 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 2 follicles, 15mil post-wash) = BFN
October 2014: IUI#4 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1-2 follicles, 12mil post-wash) = BFN
November 2014: IUI#5 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel: 1 follicle, 23mil post-wash) = BFN
December 2014: IUI#6 (gonal-f/ovidrel): 2 follicles, 55mil post-wash) = ???

*all are welcome!*

Re: Anyone avoid HPTs and instead wait for the nurse to call with results from the blood test?

  • @triathlete23 - see that's how I assumed everyone was! But the nurses act like there is so much suspense!! There must be some people who wait.

@Rumbera28 - my RE won't let me start a new cycle without a negative beta. But for some reason they don't charge me a copay unless I have an ultrasound. I feel really lucky about that. So as much as I hate the negative betas, at least I don't have to pay for it!

I know how you feel. I tested with HPT the whole week before my beta and was discouraged, but nothing was like that phone call from my doctor saying it was negative. Total. Heartbreak. I told myself that this month I would wait... but, I'm going on vacation to the Domincan Republic next week Wednesday-Sunday and 14dpt is smack dab in the middle of that vacation.... So I betchya 50 dollars I'll be POAS the whole time I'm there... Idk if I can wait until the following Monday for my BETA, especially when pina coladas are involved. Good thing is AF should arrive by Monday if it's coming, so I may not even need the Beta!

My suggestion is to hold out until the night before you do the BETA if no AF.... so then you're somewhat prepared for whatever the outcome will be.

    edit: spelling

  • I have waited for my blood test every time! I figured I wouldn't trust the HPT, and seeing as the test with the RE is free, I'm too cheap to POAS at home! I'm still waiting for this weeks beta, knowing it will be negative, but will still go through the motions.

  • I've had the same thought about waiting longer to test. Last month I never tested and just got AF. That's my plan this month too. It made things much easier. Plus the trigger can really hang around for a while and I don't want to mess with my head.

Our office never says anything like "good luck" when I have a beta. Thinking back, the only time anyone has acted hopeful is on IUI day, they always say something nice like, "This is your beta date, hopefully you don't get your period and we will call you with a positive result, or we will call to let you know you can start you meds." Very low-key, I like it. Especially after 5 failed cycles under my belt, I'm glad they respect that the last thing I want to do is get excited about possible getting pregnant.

  • The only thing I can say is that in my head - prior to actually having any 2WWs - I swear I am going to wait until the beta.  Now, when the time eventually comes I'm not sure I can keep that promise, but I don't intend to keep any HPTs in the house either.  I'm not entirely sure why.  Generally speaking I'm not an optimistic person so I don't think it's about holding onto the hope...maybe it's because I know I already paid for the blood test as part of my package so I'm gonna use it!  I'll let you know how my willpower stands up, hopefully in another few weeks.

  • Ugh, this is a timely conversation since I just peed on 3 HPTs in the past 48 hours like some sort of crazy person.

Each cycle I've said I'm going to wait it out, but then on 111 or 12dpo I lose all self-control. Coincidentally, during both of my last cycles I forgot to take my Crinone one night in the 12-13 dpo range, and got my period so cancelled my beta. So far I haven't forgotten at all this cycle, and beta is tomorrow. I already know it's negative, and so the idea of shlepping off to the clinic (on our wedding anniversary no less) to get poked for bad news is just so depressing. I was really tempted to skip the Crinone last night to avoid this, but I'm being a good girl and following doctor's orders this time :/

  • My first medicated natural cycles I tested like crazy before betas. With the IUI's I wait until the betas. With IF you get so many special moments taken away from you that I want this to be a surprise and I'm hoping/praying for a divine intervention/miracle.
