WWYD?

I saw my doctor at 16 weeks and had an ultrasound at 17 and baby was healthy and moving. I'm 18 weeks now and I still have felt any real movements. Sometimes I feel what could be him doing a flip but no kicks. I called my nurse and she said I should be feeling movements by now and I should go the the ER to get checked if I wanted too. This is my 4th pregnancy and I think with my last one I felt movement by now.

So would you go in just to get checked out and peace of mind or wait til you next appointment on January 6th?

Sorry, I know you'll hate the same questions being asked all time but not sure what to do!

Re: WWYD?

  • Is there any way you can ask your doc if you can pop in to have baby checked by fetal doppler? Seems to me they can squeeze you in for a quick visit and save the ER for more emergent situations.

  • I'm in the same boat.  I haven't felt anything I can 100% say is the baby and I'm pretty sure I felt both of my girls by now (possibly even from the outside).  It sucks that your only option is the ER but there is no way I would be waiting until January.  Is there any way they can at least get you in to use the doppler?

  • The nurse didn't offer but I think she knows I was concerned and they are pretty booked with it being close to the holidays.

  • I do not think I would go to the ER.  I would call your drs office and ask to be fit in and if they can't fit you in I would buy a fetal doppler for home.

  • If it was me, I'd walk into their office and wait until they squeezed me in - I've done it before in other situations and it worked.

Also, call first thing in morning to see if they have any cancellations - that might be a less bold approach.
  • Maybe buy your own doppler. It's a lot cheaper than a trip to the er...

I know sometimes it's hard to find hb with them so I'm not sure it would ease your worries though.

  • Have you tried laying on your left side?
I think I read somewhere that you should drink/eat something (can't remember but think it was something sugary) and then lay on your left side for a while to see if you can feel your baby start to kick.

Since you said you can feel what seems like movements but not necessarily "kicks" i wouldn't be  concerned enough to go to ER.  I think it's still early enough to be normal
  • Thanks ladies. I'm home by myself with a very cranky one year old. DO will be home in an hour and I'll try and relax and see if I can feel anything. If not then I'll call the doctor in the morning and see if they can fit me in.

  • Some women don't feel any movements until 20-22 weeks so try not to panic. As the PP's mentioned I would try to get an appointment with your OB for at least a doppler. A trip to the ER seems extreme, I'm surprised the nurse would suggest that instead of just having you come in.

  • I'm 18 weeks tomorrow and haven't felt much in the way of movement, maybe once or twice. I'd buy an at home Doppler, or go do a boutique ultrasound before going to the ER if everything was normal at my last appt.
  • Have you tried drinking cold OJ?

I drank ed a cold glass of water and ate some chocolate candy. I think I felt something but I also was having DS3 crawling on me at the time. I'll give it some time and see what happens.

  • I was told you shouldnt feel much until about 20 weeks. I would t worry too.much and try and hold out until your appt.
  • OP, I think you have a good plan. I haven't felt movements and I'm 17.5 weeks. My first pregnancy I could by this time. I know there's nothing wrong because I just had an appointment and saw LO squirming all over the place.

I'm of the belief that if you're worried go in, trust your intuition. It may be nothing but there's no harm in being cautious.

  • Sometimes when I'm moving too much, I don't realize it but when I'm relaxed and keeping still I surely feel the baby moving. I wouldn't go to the ER. You need to RELAX AND connect with your inner self.
  • I wouldn't go to the ER for this, do you know where your placenta is, mines at the front so I doubt I'll feel kicks for quite awhile! Maybe get a doppeler if you're really worried.

I know it's to my belly button. Sometimes I can feel a hard spot and I'm assuming it's the baby.

  • Feeling like there is movement but not exactly kicks is exactly what you should be feeling right now, if you feel anything at all. Were you emotional when you talked to the nurse? If she thought you sounded scared that was probably why she offered you the ER option. But you seriously have no reason to worry and certainly no reason to go to the ER.

  • I'll be 20w Friday and have only just started to feel anything sort of like a kick. I was told yesterday I have an anterior placenta.

My doctor told me at 16w not to expect much until after 20w. Yesterday his nurse practitioner freaked me out by saying I should feel something every 3-4 hours at this point! Uh...

Personally, I have a doppler and that helps some. I also have NO problem calling and playing the "Thank you for always being so nice when I call. Most places aren't as kind" card when I need a favor. (I've said these same words many a time to much success ;) )
  • I feel like a new mom, this pregnancy is so different than my other three. Plus PgAL doesn't help much either!
