I try to avoid Gestational Diabetes by passively aggressively baking during the holidays and giving out goodies. Is anyone interested in a cookie/treat thread with recipes included, bonus points if you've got a story/tradition to go with it?
The cookie I always associate with Christmas we call "Pat's chocolate cookies". My old Polish grandmother makes them, and they are perfectly chewy and chocolatey and delicious! As I got older I realized a lot of people called them "chocolate crinkles" so I asked my grandmother who "Pat" was. She had no idea. So now the running joke is "Who the Hell is Pat and why are her cookies so good?"

No stories, but I make buckeyes, coconut macaroons with a half maraschino cherry on top, fluff fudge, and cyclops cookies. There are some others but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
It all revolves around you.

When I was in high school I had a recipe for chocolate sugar cookies - involved more than adding chocolate to standard sugar cookies - but we lost the recipe somehow and I've never been able to find one again since.

I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, where holiday cookie platters are a THING. But since my parents were immigrants, we tended to be more on the receiving end of the platters, and not so much on the making end. There are so many cookies from my childhood that I want to learn to make!
The only ones I've been able to make successfully are Russian Tea Cakes. My recipe box (with the 3x5 index card that I've been using forever) is in storage, but here's a similar recipe:
Russian tea cakes are the only cookie my grandmother (may she rest in peace) used to make, and only at the holidays. I don't think I've had one in about 20 years.
I should make some this year.
We did cookie platters too (my aunt & uncle, and one of my cousins live in Pittsburgh).
I don't do many cookies, but I do make a mean peanut brittle. Although we apparently had a peanut shortage last year (huh?) so I made pecan, cashew, and almond brittle. The cashew was my fave!
But no nut brittle for me this year.

My mom had a great idea to request recipes from the family for our engagement party. We got a bunch of recipes from my grandma including this cookie recipe from her mom. I like that she called it "My Man's cookies". *Our last name is not Anderson*
@freezorburn, I had no idea that cookie platters were a Pittsburgh thing. That explains why my professor from there always brings cookie plates for the graduate students.
Cookie platters aren't a THING everywhere, but I think they're recognized everywhere.
Like, no one is going to be like, "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS PLATTER FULL OF DELICIOUS COOKIES OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES, GO AWAY."
Lol. Yeah, but like whenever you go somewhere at Christmas you take them a cookie platter. I've received two already and December isn't even in double digits yet.
And has anyone mentioned 7layer cookies yet? My mom always makes them for me (on non-Mspi years). I need to go dig out her recipe.
I am devastated to hear that I don't know about this, and have never received one. That's it, I'm moving!

My aunt used to do this thing where her and bunch of coworkers would all make huge batches of whatever their best Christmas cookie was and then split them all up so everyone would get a really diverse selection of cookies to make platters with. I thought it was awesome because I got to eat a lot of them.

Yes I've heard of this. Stoney, lets do this!
Okay. But I'm making chocolate chip cookies because those are the only ones I do really well.

My old work used to have a swap. Everyone brought like 3 dozen of a kind they liked and then everyone refilled their bags/boxes with a little of each. Not good for allergies. ETA: maybe this is the same thing OR said. #tired.
SAK how many freaking cookies do you make then if you take everyone a cookie platter?!?!
Stringy come on join in! And @charmingthemoon and whoever else is close. Let's have a cookie exchange. I'll make seven layer bars. Or gingerbread men.
Do I have to contribute or can I just eat them all ?
Or this. Cookies are not my forte. Can I just bring some of Maple's? Or maybe some beer?

Yeah it isn't a thing you always bring when you go somewhere.
That would be awesome.
And ODDLY, just as I checked back to this board, I was also looking at Smitten Kitchen's seven layer cookie recipe. I bought some at an italian bakery last week and they remind me of my childhood.

Oh yeah. Around the holidays we would receive them from my Dad's work colleagues, and some friends of the family. In a good year our dining room table was full of cookie platters.
And speaking of tables, they do cookie tables at Pittsburgh weddings. So the guests have something to take home.
What are some good dairy free cookies to make? Because, let's be real, if I'm making cookies, I'm eating them too.
Rugby, if I read the recipe right, the who is Pat cookies that started this thread is dairy free. I really hope I didn't read it wrong because I wanted to make them for my BF support group.

You are correct! No dairy, but lots of eggs if that's an issue.
What the hell @ovenrack here I am thinking how much I've really come to like you, and then you bust out with hating. Ben Stiller? We cannot be friends.
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
It all revolves around you.

Omg I didn't even read the recipe bc I just assumed. Wonder if this would work with spelt or oat flour?
