"Newbie" Playdate--Ask Your Questions Here!

So as a FTM, I find I have a million questions, so thought it might be helpful to start one of these for our random questions..

Re: "Newbie" Playdate--Ask Your Questions Here!

  • I'll start off with two of mine:

    1. (I did ask this in the Tuesday randoms also so sorry if you already read)..what is the best way to get poop stains out of LO clothing?

    2. Addy has really bad baby acne, and I feel responsible since she's EBF. I'm assuming there's some correlation between what I'm eating (which is pretty much junk food that I can grab on the go). Is there anything in particular I should be avoiding to help her (ie. no chocolate or caffeine)?
  • Loading the player...
  • For stains I've been using oxyclean free. It's pretty much a staple for everything laundry at my house though.

  • Ridiculous question: When do you introduce cereal in the bottle? I know we are way to little now but people make comments about it and I think oh crap when do you do that.

  • The baby acne questions is interesting - my LO has it too and we are EFF. Maybe just adjusting from hormones after birth?

  • Stupid question but... I was one week overdue so technically LO is 3 weeks past 40w.  He has been feeding every 1.5 hours... could this be the 3 week growth spurt ... or am I really in for it next week?

    DD: 7/5/16

  • Before my milk came in LO never spit up, since it's came in night before last he's spit up 4 times.. All while still on the boob. Am I over feeding? Or is there anything I can do?

I let him eat as long as he wants on one boob, burp, switch to the other, and burp again.
  • @chesneybrynn‌ my LO spits up a lot too...something that has helped is me reclining when I'm nursing or the football hold.

    +1 to this.

Looking for a diaper cream recommendation. I've heard about a homemade recipe that's supposed to work wonders? Nothing OTC is helping one of our girls. Her poor bum is breaking my heart! :(

It's twin girls!! Born on 11-2-14!

@chesneybrynn You can't overfeed a baby on the breast. I don't know how to reduce the spit up though.

I always heard this, but with DS I found I had to "cut him off". Or rather just not try to keep feeding him. When he unlatched and I burped him, I would stop there. If I put him back to the boob, he would take it, then we'd have what DH and I referred to as "the milk fountain", a massive quantity of projectile spit-up.
We luckily haven't had a milk fountain lol but if it comes to that I may have to take your advice ;)
  • @chesneybrynn‌ it could also be mild reflux. Maybe ask your doctor about it :) both my girls have had mild reflux.
  • @MrsC430‌ we had a horrible rash red spot almost broken skin issue and max strength butt paste cleared it up in 48 hours!
  • @smboswell1 Not really. We would put Eveline in the bathroom in her swing and run the shower really hot to make a stream room to help break apart her congestion.

I just did this while I showered!

  • @ClrkKntismyAE and @abbyful thanks, it seemed odd to put a non liquid in a bottle but a very overly advice happy co-worker just keeps pushing it that I wanted to check with a larger population since I'd seen contradictory things on the web.
  • @heisenberg I hope not because I started pumping in the first week.

  • Will I break my baby if I start pumping around 2 weeks PP? I know the recommendation is 4 weeks, but I'm struggling with being the only source of food for this guy. BF seems well established.
My supply was well established at our son's 2 week appt., and the ped told me I could go ahead and start pumping. She did recommend that we wait until 3 weeks to offer a bottle, though.

  • @MrsC430‌ we use California baby & love it. Literally cleared up her irritation within the first day. I've used it with both of my girls
  • Let's talk pacifiers:

    1. When is a good time to introduce them?
    2. Why are some people against using them?
    3. If you don't use them, what do you use instead (besides thumb sucking)?
    4. For an EBF LO, is there a recommended brand or does it not matter?

With DS, I introduced it at 3-4 weeks; we were having trouble with breastfeeding and I wanted to get that established first.
With this baby, she had good latch right away, so I introduced the pacifier when she was like 2 days old.

I EBF. I use nipple-like pacifiers: Gumdrop or Avent Soothie.

They had me introduce it in the hospital because LO clustered one day from 2:30pm-7:30-pm. The nurse felt sorry for me and told me to try the Soothie so we did. Which is what we had bought for home. The nurse said she doesn't like giving them out to EBF babies young because of nipple confusion but she said as much as he is feeding there shouldn't be an issue. Now he's 1 week 1 day old and we only use it to soothe him in the car or when I can tell he is done eating and just wants to suck on something.
  • @MrsC430 Boudreaux's Butt Paste is working great for us.

@jessa1228 We are only planning to use a pacifier at night for the purpose of reducing SIDS. We are trying to start that now, at three weeks. EBF is already well established. We are avoiding pacifier use during the day because 1) we want to be able to calm her without devices we might forget or lose (would hate to be out without a paci when she's dependent on one), 2) we've heard horror stories of weaning off, 3) we think it's often given in place of something they really need (e.g., food, warmth, changing), and 4) we just think it looks pathetic. It's another of those hotly debated things where you need to just do what's right for your baby and your family =).

This is going to sound ridiculous, since I know we all have trouble w/sleeping...but is there a general guideline for how much sleep baby should be getting per day? I track all of DS feedings and sleep and he's barely down for 10 hours/day. I'm a FTM and recall reading they should be sleeping 16 hours/day. I worry I'm not good at putting him to bed or he is overstimulated, etc...I just figured when they're tired, they would show signs of sleepiness. Any input is appreciated!

    Edited for clarity

Yeah, 10 hours a day total definitely isn't enough. Check out troublesometots.com I think she has some charts of how much total sleep, night and nap time is normal broken down by age groups.
I found this about bed 'times' on that website. Thanks for her blog :) it's giving me something to do while this turkey fights his sleep.
Hmm... according to this chart, yep, we're totally fucked.

I've been re: "normal" more in the camp "some babies are like this"

Time to seek a compromise methinks...
