positive for antibodies

Ok I just went to the doctor and she said my blood came back positive for antibodies im 12 weeks pregnant and I had a miscarriage in September they are sending me to a specialist so im a little scared never had this happen before. The hospital that I went to didn't give me a rogam shot so I went 4 days before I got a shot from my doctor just wonder if Amy one else has had something similar

Re: positive for antibodies

  • The hospital just sent me home after they confirmed my miscarriage with no shot and I made them aware that I needed one

  • You only need the shot if you are Rh- is that what you are talking about?

When I was pg with DS, I had an antibody issue with antibody E-.  I met with the MFM and had monthly u/s to check his growth and bloodwork every 2 weeks to make sure that the antibody levels were staying low.  If you do not know which antibody they are talking about, call and ask, then you can do your research.  Personally, meeting with the MFM, calmed my nerves a lot, so don't worry too much.  Extra monitoring can be a blessing.

  • Yes I'm.sure it has to do.with rh - antibody they said I received a rogam shot on the 16 of sept from my previous miscarriage on sept 12 I then got pregnant a week and half after my miscarriage but they know that my blood and this baby blood have mixed so they said I will need additional screening amd to see this specialist the doctor said they are sending me there to find out what further treatment I need

Thank you, I'm just wondering what kind of screening they do when you have antibodies fighting the baby off. Sorry for the confusion. I understand what happened I have gotten the shot with every pregnancy, but this is the first time something like this has happened

It sounds like they are on top of it, so just follow their recommendations.

  • Yes they are on top of it. I was just seeing if any one else has been screened for the same thing and what I should expect, I will definitely be doing all of their recommendations
  • I don't know anything about this but I hope everything turns out ok for you!

  • Everyone gets screened to see if they are RH positive or RH negative. I believe the deal is that if you are RH negative and your husband is RH positive then you need to get RhoGram shots because there is a mismatch with your blood and baby's blood (i.e., baby has RH protein in his/her blood and you don't). Essentially your body produces antibodies to attack and destroy RH positive blood cells. The shot will help prevent your body from attacking baby's blood cells. Does that help?
  • I.just found out that I'm rh sensitive now so I will just be monitored closer to make sure more antibodies don't develop is what they are saying and they might have to give the baby a transfusion either still in the womb or they will deliver early then 37 weeks and do one then
  • Thank you lady's for the info even my doctors are stumped on this just hopefully the baby Doesn't develop the rh disease from all this
  • Why are your doctors "stumped"?  This is fairly common.

From what I understand, the shot won't work on OP. You basically have to get it before your body figures out that baby is Rh positive (so before baby's blood mixes with mom's). This is from RhoGram.com about how their product works:

"When an Rh-negative woman carries an Rh-positive baby, small numbers of the baby’s red blood cells may get into the mother’s bloodstream. This can happen during her pregnancy as well as at delivery. The mother’s immune system sees the baby’s Rh-positive red blood cells as foreign and goes to work to produce antibodies against them. Once the expectant mom is sensitized, meaning she has developed anti-D antibodies, administering an Rh immune globulin product is not effective. A simple blood test will determine if the Rh-negative expectant mom is already sensitized. Your doctor will monitor your pregnancy to see if the fetus is harmed as symptoms of sensitization may vary."
  • Thank you lady's so much for the info im waiting for the high risk doctor to call to schedule me in guess I am in limbo tell I here
  • ^ that's good! Unless you have some crazy unusual disease or rare cancer, doctors should not be telling you they're stumped!! Glad you'll be seeing a specialist now. Good luck!

  • Yes it made me worry it was actually a nurse practitioner so she had no right to be telling me this in the first place I go Monday to a fetal internal medicine office for an ultrasound so. Im feeling much better then yesterday about this
