Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone's LO grab their ears?

My LO keeps grabbing at and ripping her ears.  I know this can be a sign of an ear infection in older babies, but I don't know about 6 week olds.  Is she just grabbing them cause they stick out and they grab anything that hits their hands at this stage, or could it be something else?  Anyone else's LO do this?  TIA!

  • I haven't ever seen mine. How's her temp?

  • Mine did this at 12 weeks and I had the same concern.  Lasted about a week but it wasn't an ear infection.  I think he was just discovering his ear..
  • Mine did yesterday, and his temp. is fine.  He's been grabbing at everything lately..even his tongue!  I'm going to keep an eye on it, but he had his hearing screened Wednesday, and there was no fluid in there at that point.
  • Claire has done that since day 1.  She actually had a hand on her ear coming down the birth canal, and the Dr. had to move it out of the way.  I had the Pedi. check them because I was concerned, but he said they were fine, and it was just something she likes to do.
  • Mine does this when she's overly tired or hungry -- or both.

This is DS as well!  He was holding at least 1 of his ears during every ultrasound I had (and I had 11 because of complications).  He still likes to hold them in his sleep and hates his arms being swaddled since that prevents him from holding them.  Silly babies!

  • Some babies also grab at their ears when they're tired. Does it seem to coincide when when she might need a nap?
  • Not there yet, but I did hear that the point behind your ears is kind of like a soothing point, My mom told me I used to do that when I was little, and even now when I am bored or just waiting at a stop light I play with my ears.  Kind of strange I know, but I think it is just one of those things.
