Teething

I tried searching the boards but couldn't find anything..

DS is already teething, early at 3 months, and was just wondering if any STM had any tips on how to cope. Poor thing is a mess I've been doing infant Tylenol (only about twice a day when its really bad) and I have all natural baby orajel. I've tried teethers but they all seem too big for his mouth still so he doesn't really like them, and he tries to chew on his paci. Do any of you know of any teether that might work? maybe be a bit smaller?

Also, he has been extra fussy when he's up which I know is expected, but he has been sleeping a lot more than he has been, is that normal?

Re: Teething

  • I'll give advice on the tether question. I didn't experience teething that young with DD

take those cute baby wash cloths, get them wet and freeze them in a shape small enough for your DS to gum on. They are cold, and just soft enough for teething.

This was pediatrician's recommendation too, as LO was trying to chew her burp cloth at the time.

Also, he recommended avoiding baby orajel. He said that there is a side effect that can cause respiratory distress. He said it's rare, but he's not willing to chance it. Living 20+ min from the nearest hospital, I'm going with his recommendation.

  • Those are all great suggestions. I do those and have also had my LO wear a Baltic Amber teething necklace. My DD wore one and took to teething like a champ. She even cut her molars and I have no idea. Check into that as well.
  • Btw, your LO won't be chewing on the necklace. It's just for him to wear to relieve teething discomfort.
  • I second the Hylands teething tablets and Amber jewelry. They both helped a ton with DS1. Good luck!

I checked out walmart and bru by me and neither of them carried the Hylands teething tablets but I bought their gel and it works really well for her

    Eta: autocorrect lol
  • Thanks everyone :) I have been thinking about getting him an amber necklace after all the talk about them lately I'll probably give that a try and I'll have to look into those tablets too.

@csgtv I've never even heard of those before but those are awesome! That might be something to try seeing how he ALWAYS has his hands in his mouth lol.

  • Oh yes! The amber teething necklace cuts the drool way down for us! My only issue is that the smallest one I could find is too big, so it gets in her way.
  • I've heard mixed reviews on the teething tablets but the Hylands Gel is what we used for DD.

  • I haven't done much research into the amber necklaces yet because we're not teething yet.. but what are the chances of the string breaking and the beads getting loose? I know they're not supposed to be chewed on and you should supervise when wearing, just curious how they are kept together?

  • What everyone else said, but wanted to add that extra sleep is normal. DS always slept more when teething, sick, and after shots. In addition to the teether advice, I bought a bee teeether thing at Walmart that DS loved; it has 4 different types of teethers as the wings and the body buzz creating a soothing vibration. Here is a link to the teether: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Garanimals-Teether/29507816

  • @littlemissmarla‌, we have a necklace and bracelet and before and after each bead is a knot. So in the event that it breaks only one bead comes off. I used the necklace with my toddler and he never played with it or grabbed it.
  • I've heard great things about the teething tablets. DS (14 weeks). is a drooling machine, and is chewing his hands all day long. He doesn't seem like he's in pain, and I haven't felt any teeth yet so I don't think he's teething just yet, but I don't think it's that far off either. Has anyone tried using the mesh tethers? They're similar looking to a pacifier but you can put cold stuff in the mesh to let baby suck on it? I have a couple from my baby shower but not sure what to put in it, or if DS would be too young for that.

  • An interesting read regarding amber necklaces:

To each there own, but I'll stick with science. Plus, I'd say no based on the choking hazard alone.

  • @INmommy871278 Thanks! The past three days now he's been sleeping most of the day and usually he's up a lot during the day so last night after two days of it I was wondering, glad it's normal :) That teether looks awesome, it looks like the wings are skinny enough for him to hold onto. He's good at picking stuff up and putting it in his mouth but the ones we have are too thick for his little hands still.

  • The necklaces generally have a knot between each bead, so if it does break they don't go everywhere. I have an anklet on my lo and it seems to work great

  • I know it's normal for the front teeth to come in first but is it possible for one of the side teeth to come in first? LO is drooling a lot and chewing on his hands and I think I'm feeling something sharp off to the side but not sure of its a tooth or calcium deposit. He's also not extra cranky or anything so I'm skeptical that it's a tooth.
First Baby and a complete surprise.
Hubby has decided to be team green so we are driving friends and family crazy!
  • I would be careful with the teething tablets or Orajel.  The teething tablets were recalled a few years ago for containing inconsistent amounts of belladonna (poison).  They aren't as well regulated as a medicine would be or tested for safety.  And Orajel has been linked to serious side effects in babies.

I think these are more for babies who are eating solids.  We used to put fruit pieces in them for my other kids, but I wouldn't give those to my 3 month old yet.  I think you'd be better off with a cold washcloth at this age.

  • some babies get their vampire teeth first even though most babies get these ones after the molars, so it really all depends on the baby and genetics

I didn't know about the tablets, good to know I probably won't waste my time. I'd rather stay away from any meds really. I do have the infant tylenol but I limit it and the orajel I have is all natural and doesn't have any belladonna in it. I ordered an amber necklace so we will try that for during the day time and see if that helps.

@walterjenne my DS is getting his front two bottom and one on the bottom on the side, and the side one is up more than the front two so its possible, my friends little girl had just her vampire teeth for the longest time, it all just depends I suppose.

  • I have no advice. Just wanted to say how jealous I am. My 21 month old has no teeth, never mind my 3 month old.
So, while it sucks to see a baby so young in pain from teething, you know at least one person would love to go through some teething right now!
All the best! Give lot of snuggles!
  • All of your posts are extremely helpful. My LO is 4 months old and teething which is keeping him up at night. I gave him some Natural Orajel for the first time tonight. Has anyone had or read about negative effects with the natural Orajel? The teething tablets you all reference are Hylands? Are they appropriate for a 4 month old who is not yet on solids?
  • DD is teething, I think.  She's drooling and gnawing like crazy.  I bought her a figure 8 teether off Amazon and she loves it.  I don't use any orajel or tablets since orajel is not considered safe and the tablets have been recalled in the past.  If I notice she is uncomfortable, I give her a little tylenol and it helps take the edge off.  Frozen baby washcloths are awesome as well.

  • Totally trying the frozen washcloth thing. We tried some teething tabs today, didn't seem to do anything. I wonder if I'm doing it wrong.

  • DD cut her first tooth the night before last.  My heart was irrationally sad over it.  She has been fussy at night and nursing in the MOTN like a maniac.  I am going to try the frozen wash cloths.  Her drooling has practically stopped since that tooth broke through.

  • My 22 month DS just got his first tooth. And he's been a grump. I looked here for some suggestions and laughed imagining him at his age walking around with Sophie the giraffe in his mouth. Might be something for at home, not when we're out and about.

I can't imagine my five month old DS with teeth.

He didn't get his first tooth until almost 2 years old????

Yup. We took him for x-rays at 18 months per doctor's suggestion. They showed that there were teeth, but not even close to coming out yet. Our family dentist and the specialist we saw both hadn't seen it that late before. Such a sigh of relief when I found the first tooth. And just a second one this past weekend!
