@teitani Mine was called into my pharmacy and I had to go pick it up. My insurance covered it, but I still ended up paying a bit -- $10 for the meter, and about $50 total for 200 test strips. The lancets were free.
--- Jan Siggy Challenge: What You're Looking Forward to Most After Baby Arrives ---
I got the one touch Verio IQ from my dietitian the first time I met her. Apparently this curse falls under preventative care, so all my equipment, test strips and lancets are 100% covered by insurance, so I pay nothing.
I had a super bad day. Had a small slice of pizza and a salad at a work thing for lunch, my glucose skyrocketed to 165 after 1 hr. At least it went back to 110 after 2 hours. My % in target isn't too hot lately with too many experiments.
What are you guys snacking on before bed? My big trouble last pregnancy was my fasting number, and I tested this morning and had a high fasting again (102). My after meal numbers were good yesterday, so I know it is really the overnight that I need to work on.
F15 December Siggy Challenge: Holiday Decoration Fails
@CatLadyTX my morning numbers have sky rocketed the last couple mornings. I am now in the same boat trying to figure out what to eat before bed as well. A yogurt before bed was working and now it is not. Hopefully there are some other suggestions out there.
PikoPiko, thanks. I really appreciate your response and support. Like you, @Ellteejay, I haven't been able to speak to a professional about this yet, so it has been easy to worry and over google-search. Ellteejay, I'm sure we will feel better once we get more information and are empowered to take some control (in as much as we can) over what is going on. And in the meantime, it is nice to know that there is a safe space to come to for support. Thanks again, @PikoPiko.
@CatLadyTX - I rarely snack after diner. The couple times I snacked, I had a handful of mixed nuts or edamame and a hard boiled egg white. That way there would be more protein to go with the carbs. I've tried yoghurt with nuts, which seems to be fine but make sure the greek yoghurt is non fat and plain with very few ingredients (Face or the Costco brand are good). I somehow don't do too hot otherwise.

This week before bed my fasting sugars have been somewhat high. Woke up today and they where 77 abd I had eaten a turkey burger before sleeping.
Normally I'll have some kind of protein. A handful of almonds or walnuts, or some mozerella cheese with pickles, or cheese with pepperoni if I don't have heart burn.
EDIT:
Random thing I want to say my husband is an ass and likes to make comments on my weight or what he think my weight will go up to once I'm born.
I have the feeling that a lot of people I know in real life think this just because eating like this is so restrictive.
But after having to live like this for months now I think once hes here I'm going to eat better and healthy. My mom is diabetic and has been since I was in Jr. High. I don't want to live the rest of my life having to test and worry about my sugar levels. This has def been a wake up call that the way I've been eating the last 5 years is just not good.

I don't really snack but I eat dinner a bit late for some (start around 7:30-8:30). If I want anything at night, it's something cozy, so instead of cookies or a big mug of cider (what I'd normally have), I have a mug of peppermint tea with either no sweetener, one Splenda, or a little honey... depending on how my post-dinner blood sugar was.
In general, I've been relying pretty regularly on peppermint and cinnamon to help me semi-satisfy my sweet tooth.

I do this too! I drink and insane amount of herbal tea with a pack or two of stivia or splenda. Only way I can curb it.

@CatLadyTX I was told that fasting sugar issues normally can't be fixed by diet and because of that, they didn't even have me try. They just started me on the insulin at bedtime right away.
@catladytx for me the insulin isn't too bad. I take half of a pill at bedtime and that's it. Because my fasting numbers are the only ones that have been bad, I have to be careful of what I eat and when, but I think I have it pretty easy compared to the rest of you guys. I don't like the fact that even though the MW I saw at my regular appointment Monday said I would be able to stick with the MW's, the one I saw on Friday with my scare, said the dr.s wouldn't let me continue with the MW's while on the glyburide.
@HailsMom you get a pill?! No fair... I'd much rather have that than these 4x a day injections! I'm tired of poking myself!

@peaceofkia did they give you a reason for giving you the insulin you inject and not the pill form?
At my first meeting they told me straight up if I can't control it or if I get to 30 weeks and my numbers start spiking that I could possibly end up on either one.

Sorry @PeaceofKia I think it's only because I need such a low dose. I also think the difference is in how the insulin is metabolized. The glyburide is a long acting insulin that works over a matter of hours. Your injectable insulin is more of a fast acting -immediate response. (Do they have you check your sugar and then calculate the amount you need)
@hailsmom yeah, based on my levels before meals determines the dose I give myself and I have to eat within 10 minutes to avoid my sugars going too low. The end is near though...I think.

How long did it take before you got the "hang " of things? Ive only been testing since the 4th and my fasting numbers are high every day, 100-110 usually. I kinda expected that. But I've been kinda experimenting once a day to see what is affecting me and what isn't. So I have a couple numbers from the last few days that are higher, 128-138. But I would like think for the first week or two they would expect that more as we are learning. I'm positive that I'll have to take the pill at night though and I'm sure they'll put me on it at my next meeting.
My numbers were high for the first week and by the end of that week, my endo placed me on insulin. So be careful. I still don't have the hang of it and it's been almost a month.
F15 January Siggy Challenge: What I'm Looking Forward to After the Babies Arrive Bringing them both home...UPDATE...The girls are home!!! 1/7/15 after 20 days in the NICU!
I think that depends on what you're battling with. Some ladies here have a hard time meeting their fasting numbers, whereas some (like myself) have a battle with after meal numbers. I sense that the morning fasting number is the devil because there seems to be very little one could do while sleeping.
The first week I had a few experiments so I had several oopsies. I talked about a lot of the things that didn't work quite well with my dietitian and she wasn't too hung up on the spikes, instead told me how I could modify with those meal choices. By the end of my 2nd week I feel I was a bit more comfortable, I was still experimenting (and still am on my 4th week since getting the dreaded call) but I knew what my fall back meals are. I think for you to feel like you got the hang of it is when you have identifed what works for you.
Hi, new to the group. Pregnant with twin boys, and high blood sugar is completely opposite of what I'm used to. I received the call last week. From what I understand. I passed my fasting, failed my 1hr and 2hr and passed my 3hr. My fails were only 6-8points above the range. So far, I have only been told to go to a diabetic meeting (classroom setting) this Friday. Any clue whats next?
My appointment with the specialist is on Wednesday. I am trying not to overthink everything I'm putting in my mouth, but it's hard! I'm eating incredibly healthy and low carb, is there really anything else I can do until then? I just hate feeling panicked over possibly not making a smart food choice.

I'm still trying to get the hang of this. I've been doing this since I think 20 weeks. And The first week or two where really rocky. After that I figured what worked for me. But here lately my fasting numbers have been high in addition to my after meal numbers.

Just make sure you read labels. I would also add make sure you get a variety of veggies and eat the fruits that are low in sugar...that way you don't end up with other issues like low potassium like me.
Also every meal and snack you eat pair it with protein of some kind. Whether your protein be meat, cheese, yogurt, beans, or nuts pair your stuff with protein. Protein with help keep your sugar lower while keeping you fuller.
EDIT to add
I also find keeping a food journal. But I don't know if that would hurt you or beneifit you since you have a ED history. But to me it helps me stay on track of ok did I eat enough veggies, was there enough variety, did I eat too many carbs like bread or rice. Nice to look back and see ok I ate that and that on this day thats where I screwed up.

With the caveat that we're all different, as are all of our specific medical situations... have you tried doing some cardio right before bed? My particular GD responds really well to 15 min of walking or 5 min of jogging, and maybe if you do it right before bed (I find it easiest to fit in just jogging in our bedroom while watching TV), it might affect your morning fasting number?

I think my GD just hates me. Me being at work my number are pretty good after meals with all the moving and walking I do. I tried getting on the treadmill after dinner a few times after eating the same meals i had for lunch days later and my numbers where super high.
So I guess I'm a speshullll snowflake because even when I exercise at dinner my number are still high but not during the day. So I learned for me personally dinner can't have a lot of carbs like bread, pasta, or tortillas even if they are whole grain or wheat. But thats just me.

I think I'm going to try cutting the carb count down a bit at night and add in more protein instead to see if that helps. I keep a food journal, I'm required to by the dietician. So we can see what is affecting me and what isn't. I already work out quite a bit, on a daily basis. I'll try adding the walking at night but from what I gathered is there is very little control when it comes to the fasting number.
I love how our check in carries us through the whole week!!
F15 January Siggy Challenge: What I'm Looking Forward to After the Babies Arrive Bringing them both home...UPDATE...The girls are home!!! 1/7/15 after 20 days in the NICU!
My struggle is with breakfast, so I jump in the pool for half an hour to keep my numbers low. On days that I know I can't hit the gym, I'd avoid carbs entirely and eat half an apple as a snack. I'm also required to keep a food journal, it does make me eat less knowing I have to report every damn thing. One of the keys to keeping my numbers in range after meal is either go for a 20mins walk after or eat smaller portions.
I'm sorry to see you here with us @foxslaw. If I were you, I'd enjoy today and tomorrow before the appointment. If you really want to get a head start, begin by reading every label. Most likely you'd be advised to stick with at most 45g of carbs per meal (30g for breakfast), at least that's my allowance. I'd have to admit reading labels does bring out a lot of past demons. Make sure you communicate well with your dietitian about your relationship with food. I regretted not admitting to have experienced ED and had a really rough start, in addition to feeling ultra guilty over weight loss. I came clean at my last appointment and she was able to make me feel less stressed. We beat ED before, we'll survive this too! Hugs.
I really just hate how all you ladies are having to struggle with ED and then adding GD on top of it.
I know how rough just the GD is but I can't imagine how you ladies hold up dealing with both.

I love how our check in carries us through the whole week!!
I find this thread extra useful, otherwise I'd be boring the rest of the Feb 15 ladies with my frustrations with this curse. Perhaps for our next check-in, we should each post our favourite meals or snacks? I'd totally like to know what options are out there that I haven't yet thought of.
Thanks @PikoPiko! Unfortunately, I am not a stranger to being really stringent about reading labels/ingredients. I think the posting your snack idea is really great! I will make a point to be honest with my struggle (I was only fully recovered last September or so), but I *hate* talking about it in front of my BF (but I need him at the appointment so he understands how serious this is).
@foxslaw I went today for my first appointment with the diabetic nurse. She is having me stick to my regular routine for a week and monitor before and 2-hours after each meal (snacks allowed in between). Then, she said I should have a pretty good sense of where I need to make adjustments. Like you, I feel I have a fairly healthy diet, but from what it sounds like, our bodies may just not be able to handle even an otherwise low-carb meal. I anticipate feeling a little overwhelmed by food choices in the coming weeks, but I will say that this first appointment and even my first three tests this afternoon/evening have already helped me feel more in control of this. Also, my husband came. It was really good for him to be there - he asked questions I forgot to, and having him understand everything is going to prove very helpful. Good luck tomorrow -- I hope your appointment is informative and reassuring!
