belly rings?

I've heard you have to eventually take your belly ring out, being a FTM not sure when.  But I have also heard theres ways to keep it from closing up.  Any suggestions?

  • @MCRM14‌ I was literally thinking about posting this exact question this morning! I'm probably retiring mine for good but wasn't sure when that needed to happen. @emilyzemily‌ That's a good point about letting the hole close. I should probably do it sooner than later... I've had mine for 10 years and I think it's time to let it go.

I haven't had my belly ring for over 12 years, and I still have a very noticible "hole". It's closed up but it still looks like it's there. It got worse after my first pregnancy and it's still very obvious. I'm sure everyone scars differently, but that's my personal experience.

ETA: I only had the piercing for about 2 years.

  • They definitely sell those flexible bars at Spencer's in the mall (if you're in the U.S.), although I actually don't recommend their jewelry since it's very cheaply made. Not sure why I mentioned that then, just confirming that they exist/I have seen them I guess. I would look for something quality online if you're looking to keep the piercing still. Personally, I have given up on mine.
  • I took mine out years ago, but there are definitely ways to try to keep it. I've had more than one friend successfully get to term with their's in.

  • With my first pregnancy, I took it out about half way through when I started to show, then just put it back in once I was healed from the c-section. It hadn't closed up. I'm thinking I might let it go this time though.

  • I was actually thinking about coming to terms with removing mine tonight.  I keep stalling, but its time.  I'm smooshy and muffin topping at the moment so its not like I'm showing it off at this point.

  • One of my best friends from high school had one and she left it in too long and her hole looks pretty jacked up. She hates it. I think it probably just depends on the person and I can't remember when she took it out, but I would just do it asap to try to avoid that.

This is my fourth pregnancy. With my other three I just took it out when my belly started growing and would stick it back in here and there to make sure it didn't close up. I have mine pierced on the top and bottom.... after I lost all the baby weight with the first three and toned up it looked normal. Planning to do the same thing this time. I would love to keep them out for good but four holes isn't pretty no matter how in shape/toned I get. If I knew then what I know now I would not have gotten it pierced.
  • Okay, you guys motivated me, I just took mine out. Here's hoping it closes and doesn't scar too weirdly. But my belly's been muffin-tippy for years, so who cares anyway.

  • Oh no. I've had mine for so long that I genuinely didn't even think about stretched holes and having to take it out untill I saw this thread! I'm not ready - it will be like saying goodbye to my young self (but I don't want a saggy hole) arrrggggh, the sacrifices us mothers have to make...!
  • I'm not getting rid of mine yet, though my husband would like to see it gone. I got a flexible ring off eBay last time. Not super quality but it worked just fine. I plan to do the same thing this time around. It was probably close to 20 weeks or more when I switched rings. Everything still looks totally normal.
  • I'm thinking mine will never close. I have had it out for about a year maybe a a tad less and it still looks the same as it did when I removed it. Here comes a giant ugly hole! ;)
  • I took mine out before my first one and the hole minimally stretched. And three years later my hole still isn't completely closed. So it might not close at all. If it does and you want to put it back in a tattoo shop can taper it or stretch the previous hole back open
  • I took mine out a couple days ago bc thr doctor said when 20 weeks come and they do ultrasounds it gets in the way of the machine
  • I can't remember when I had to take mine out, but it was rather late...I had quite a belly! It didn't close up properly and a couple months after birth I put the ring back. My scar look more or less like it always has too ;)

  • I literally just tried taking mine off when I got out of the shower but had just finished slathering coconut oil all over my tummy. After reading this, I'm going to go do this stat!

I have a pregnancy belly ring in. I don't plan on taking mine out. I had my appendix removed from my belly button and it's a scar that I don't care for. I love my belly ring and I hope my midwife doesn't make me take it off.
  • I'm keeping mine. My 3 friends have had great success with the flexible bars. I hadn't multiple piercing that will require flexible bars. My dr said they should be fine. I'm 12w and just switched them all to flexible.
