Engorgement after weaning

I have never been to this board before so I apologize if this has recently been discussed.

I nursed DS for 12 months and started weaning him last week. I got him down to 2x a day and then he was doing so (surprisingly) well that I stopped nursing altogether.  Looking back, maybe I should have done 1x a day for a few days before stopping but too late now.

I have had an over supply issue ever since he was born and never seemed to fully regulate.  Now I'm really engorged and starting to worry.  I am in less pain than I was the first couple days but they are still really full and lumpy.  DH kinda freaked me out cuz he felt them and was like "OMG" so it made me wonder if this isn't okay. Everything I've read said that it could take a week or so and I don't think I have any plugged ducts (no redness)...

Anyone have experience with this? TIA!

Re: Engorgement after weaning

  • @sweetmarie23 and @rn536, how long did it last?  One of my boobs is doing okay and definitely getting better (though it didn't start as engorged as the other) but the other boob is seriously soo hard and so full..still very tender.  It does seem like it's getting a little softer but sooo slowly. It's been almost an entire week since I last nursed DS!

  • For me I think it took about about a week until my chest didn't feel like it was going to explode, though I was nursing 1x/day or once every other day. When I was really sore I would just stick the cabbage leaves in my shirt and it seemed to provide a bit of relief. DD hasn't nursed now for 15 days (so just over two weeks) and I can notice quite a difference but there is still a ways to go before all the milk dries up. We are pretty much doing this together lol :)
Thanks..yea I was doing cabbage leaves for the first few days and now I'm mostly just doing ice packs.  I just with both felt like my left one cuz it's so much better than the right.  It just seems so unhealthy to be so full just sitting there..I worry about mastitis but so far they aren't red so hopefully it slowly drains I guess...

  • I have heard about the cabbage leaves often but never tried it..  I weaned my DS very slowly went from 2 a days to once a day to once in a while till we finally weaned.. it was a bit painful after engorging sometimes and I feel like hot showers/baths helped me as well as dealing with leaky boobies every so often.. lol.. with time it passes.. GL!

  • I had exactly the same... You can try just to hand express a little bit to relieve pressure...
