Early Riser

DS has been getting up at 5-5:30 consistently since we stopped co-sleeping and transitioned him to the crib. When we co-slept, he would sleep until 7 or 8 most days.

Does anyone have any magical tricks to get him to sleep longer? 6:30-7. That's all I'm asking for!

Re: Early Riser

  • DD has pretty Always been in her room and always gets up between 5 and 6. I can count the amount of time she has slept past 630 on one hand. She is up and raring to go at that time. I just have gotten used to it. She used to get up at 5 and slowly she has gotten closer to 6. I try to not get her right away and see if she will be content in her crib for a bit or go back to sleep. Good luck!

  • Dd has been getting up around 5 for the last month or so, we just transitioned her to her crib in her own room this week and she's been sleeping later!
I'm thinking its the light? Her room is darker than ours, it may also be the temp, her room is cooler so she's bundled and cozy. Whatever it is, I hope it stays this way!
Maybe its something like that waking him up? Hope you can figure it out!

  • It must be something about that time of the morning because DD used to wake up at that time and want a bottle every morning. The past couple months she still wakes up but usually falls back asleep on her own after a little bit for another hour.

No magic to keep him sleeping, but LO usually wakes around the same time, empties both boobs, and falls back asleep while nursing. We then usually get another hour or two out of him. Of course I'm awake then but it allows me some quiet time to get chores done.

Have you tried feeding him immediately, leaving room conditions exactly as they are for sleeping? I also don't do a diaper change during that wakeup.

Same here. If we leave his room, it's done and we're up for the long haul. If we stay in his room, no talking, no diaper change, he goes right back to sleep for another 1-2 hours.

To answer some of your questions:

He is standing up and crying. I usually take him to the couch to nurse and then he plays for an hour or two before taking a nap. I may try nursing him in his room first just to see if that works. Good idea!

ETA I don't change his diaper until after nursing just in case. I have just been really confused because we had just finished the sleep lady shuffle and have been trying to avoid nursing him to sleep or taking him out of the crib before it's time to wake up. I think in this case though it's worth a shot if it gets him to sleep another hour or so.

  • I did the sleep lady shuffle at 6 months and it helped us to quit nursing in the evenings and for naps.  However, I still nurse DD 2 times in the night.  If she wakes up before 6:30, I nurse her back to sleep.
  • Thank you! Bought us 2 more hour this morning, even if I did end up sleeping on the couch with him.

    Desperate times and all that.

  • Mine also has been waking up at this time, but unfortunately, skipping the diaper change is out of the question because i can smell that she pooped. I still gove her yhe bottle in the dark and rock her after, but she's too awake by then. Boo.
  • @Sakura16‌ I feel your pain! DD went thru month or more of night-pooping. So not fun! I played around with her diet and timing of meals to help. Although, I think it was changing her meds (which aid in digesting her food) that finally took care of it... :/

  • DD did this for awhile (although we never co-slept). She would wake up babbling and play around for a bit and eventually start crying, however (and this may seem cruel to some people), but I left her there and treated it as a night time waking. I felt ok doing this since it was still pitch black at that time and she went to bed late enough (like 8 or 8:30pm) that I wasn't making her sleep too long. After a week or so, she adjusted to the new wake up time of around 6:30 a.m which is much better for everyone.
  • Just to commiserate, we are up at 5 almost every morning too. And she poops so we have to change her. We have tried upping her feedings at night and it helps when she will take it. Which is only when she feels like it :)

    Stubborn baby.

  • Its such a trade off here. I can get her to sleep in a little longer if I feed her a bunch thought the night and early morning. BUT I'm working hard on dropping those feeds. So far if I have gone more than 2 hours without feeding her then she's up by 5:30 am.
