Help with questions for my midwives.

I'm trying to compile a list of questions to take with me to my next appointment. I wanted to focus on birthing procedures with my midwives after realizing I haven't even scratched the surface as to how they handle l&d at the hospital. So far I have the normal...When to call? How far apart for contractions before I can go in? What happens in the event my water breaks? In the hospital how am I allowed to labor ex: Can I walk? Are there exercise balls? Can I birth in any position I choose? If I want to do hypnobirthing will I be allowed to have as much peace as possible?

I feel like I'm missing and bunch more logical questions too ask. Are there any questions I should be asking other than what's listed? What have you lady's talked about with your doctors and/or are going to be asking?

Eta - I used the search function and did not see this topic. I'm sorry if it is a repeat.

Re: Help with questions for my midwives.

  • I think they typically start having those discussions around 30-32 weeks, but feel free to ask now. With DD My OB at the time gave me a sheet with all those typical questions and the answers and told me to put it on the fridge to have handy :) ie what to do when your water breaks, how to tell if you are in labor, when to call the office, etc. my current one hasn't mentioned anything about this yet and I just saw her this week at 27 weeks. regarding your labor questions I'm sure since they are Midwives you'll get a resounding yes to all your questions. Go ahead and ask early since it's on your mind. You can begin with whatever you have so far and I'm sure more will come to mind, and they'll likely give you even more details that you haven't thought of yet.

  • Thanks! I wasn't sure when to start asking but I like to be prepared. My next appointment isn't for another week and a half and I'll be in my third tri so I figured I'd start it out with some questions.

  • I think a hospital tour & birthing class would give you some better focus in terms of what questions to ask/what the hospital offers. Does your hospital offer them?
  • I normally don't put much stock in Bump tools and articles, but this helped me sort out what I wanted to ask quite a bit:

Go through the items, research what they are if you don't understand, and it will go a long ways towards telling you what happens during birth, and sorting out in your head what you do/do not want.  I brought this with me to my last appointment, and used it to make sure I didn't forget what to ask.
