Freaking flu shot!

I was all about getting one. Now here I sit with my arm sore. A swollen painful lump and bruise. And body aches.

All of which were listed on the info sheet the doctor gave me, but really? Last pregnancy I didn't have a reaction at all!

Any one else get one already with negative side effects?

  • I always get a sore arm, it's a know side effect that I thought everyone got. As far as the body aches, that's not a side effect, you could be coming down with something or you are just tired and your body aches.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I got mine Monday and just had a sore arm for a couple days- nothing else.

  • I didn't get mine for this pregnancy, but a few years ago I got it and had quite a few flu like symptomes. I had body aches, hot/cold flashes, and a low grade fever. They only lasted one night.
  • I always get an arm ache, and I swear it hurts more than any other shot!!

I'm more concerned over the fact that this years shot doesn't seem to protect from this years most prevalent strain, Influenza A. Which also happens to be a really bad flu to get. I still plan to get the shot, but way to add another stress to pregnancy!! Looks like DS and I will be hibernating until May!

  • I got mine about a month ago. Hurt like a bitch for a few days. Hang in there... in the mean time, taking Tylenol might help the pain.
  • You might exhibit a few minor symptoms when getting the shot. The bigger concern here is that they tested the most common strains of flus going around and the vaccine only covers 48% of strains because apparently some of the strains mutated. I'm so freaked out about this because my MIL gave me and DH a cold, but his symptoms are minimal and I'm practically bedridden Can you imagine how a pregnant woman would be with the flu?!?
  • I have not gotten one yet bc of my HG. I think I will this next appt. yuck.
  • I still have the lump and bruise but the body aches seemed to subside. I don't normally get flu shots unless pregnant. So I guess I'm just not used to it.

  • I have permanent shoulder damage from the one I got 4 years ago, but that's a story for another day.

  • @lala5507‌ really?! What happened, if I may ask?

    I'm curious too!

  • It makes your arm sore because that type of immunization goes into your muscle tissue. It's a honkin needle... vs other injections that go into your fatty tissue.

I always get minor flu-like symptoms after getting the flu shot. It's not that you're sick, it's the antibodies building in your system that makes your body THINK that you're sick. That's why sometimes you get mimic-flu-like symptoms after getting the shot.

  • This is exactly how I reacted when I got one the first time. It was horrible. I am currently debating if I really want one because I had such a bad experience. I felt that way for about 3 days! Hope you are okay!
  • They said this year hurts a lot!!
  • Mine went really well this year (for the first time), but my two year old ran around with a swollen arm for three days. Fever, redness, pain - it was not fun, but beats having the flu.

  • Hope arm feels better soon! But seriously everyone: the CDC has announced that the flu is looking particularly dangerous this year, so get your shots. (I think it's H3N2?) And as PPs have mentioned, the shot is only effective against about 50% of strains this year--so be careful regardless of whether you got the shot! :(

Read and watched this today and personally know of someone who died after getting this flu shot that doesn't even work.
  • I got the flu two days before being scheduled to get the shot. :) I have heard that this year it's not even that effective so I guess it doesn't matter. I've basically gotten every sickness out there this pregnancy. I attribute that to teaching kindergarten though. Hope you all feel better!
  • @lala5507‌ really?! What happened, if I may ask?
I will give you the very abbreviated version.  Basically, I am very thin (not much "meat" on my arm") and I was given the shot far too high on my arm.  Right into my shoulder.   I've had several doctors tell me it should never had been given to me in that spot and if I ever get one again make sure a RN gives me the shot not a medical assistant.

  • Being a RN... This topic drives me nuts. No offense to anyone. But you can't get the flu from the flu shot, yes you can get symptoms that mimic the flu from the antibodies. And yes, your arm will be sore most likely. I am required to get the flu shot and I honestly probably wouldn't even get it if I didn't have to. The flu strain this year has already mutated and the flu shot that everyone got doesn't even cover the new strain. Pointless.

I was just trying to provide you with information about the virus mutating. Yes, most the strains were collected with the original flu shot. But some of those strains that were in our flu shots have already mutated. This information just got released today to my hospital from the CDC, therefore we are having to warn parents of our babies and be extra diligent with hand washing since we work in a very immunocompromised population. I have nothing against the flu shot, I recommend it to everyone, but this is something they couldn't predict.

  • I didn't come in here to argue. I was just trying to give insight on the news I obtained from the hospital I work at this morning. Of course we want everyone to have the flu shot, it just is awful that the strain that is actually killing babies and children in our hospital is the strain that was mutated from the original vaccine.

@melodysmommy09 Please don't fear monger.  And remember to fact check.

    Some people can't grasp science....
How am I a monger and yes I know what a monger is.Maybe we have different definitions? Thank you for letting me know that my post was only half true though and I do mean that sincerely . I still choose not to get the vaccine and regret having my daughter get it considering how sick she got after it and ended up with the flu anyways. As for the some people can't grasp science remark from IFinTN. I'm not sure who you are talking about here or if you even read my comment correctly in the first place.
  • @melodysmommy09‌ She didn't say monger like the noun, she said fear monger like the verb. Fear mongering is spreading sensationalism with the goal of inciting fear and panic.
Because that was completely my goal right? Smh I'm glad people I dont know seem to know me better than I know myself. If that was my goal I promise I would have done a much better job.js
Thank you for clearing that up for me starbuck and none of that was towards you.
  • I declined when my nurse midwife asked if I wanted one I felt that it would most likely do more harm then good and she agreed with my decision
