Anyone use Mirena?

Maybe TMI, but I just got mine yesterday. I totally trust my Dr, and in our initial conversation, she said that she uses it herself, experiences no side effects and patients seem to love it overall. Besides my Dr, I personally do not know anyone that uses it, so I just wanted to reach out and see if anyone on the board had anything to share about their experience? Good or bad

I have one. I also had one before I had DS to treat my endometriosis. I love mine (I am one that has NO period while I have them). The first time I had the mirena, it did cause ovarian cysts right when I first got it, and one had to be removed via emergency lap. surgery. But other than that I loved it! And I love the one i have now!

I've had it for 7 months now. Great - no side effects, don't feel it. Nothing. I'm still BFing so other than getting some spotting in the first 3 weeks I haven't had a period and it's possible won't even after I stop nursing. My sister got it 6 months ago - also pretty happy and no noticeable side effects.

I've had mine for about a year now. For the first few months my periods seemed heavier and more frequent, but now I barely have one. I might have light spotting for day or two, not even enough to warrant a tampon. I love that I don't have to think about it!

I had one for about 4 mos. Unfortunately, for me it caused really severe and frequent migraines and I never stopped bleeding. I had to have it yanked. Everyone else I know who has it loves it though.

I had my first Mirena for five years. Insertion was pretty painful - I should've gone for the prescription meds and had my DH (then boyfriend) drive me home. But it went away after a couple days. I stopped getting periods after 2 years. I did have a few ovarian cysts, but they never needed treatment.

Had it taken out and got pregnant with 3 months (planned).

Second one was inserted 8 weeks PP. WAY easier insertion this time - barely noticed it. Periods were light but totally random - sometimes every 2 weeks, sometimes none for 2 months. But I was pumping as well so who knows. They completely went away after I stopped pumping. It's been 2.5 years and no cysts yet.

I get hormone-induced migraines with aura, and am at a higher stroke risk, so I can't take the pill. Mirena's hormones don't leave your uterus, and I've almost completely stopped having migraines since then - I now have them one once or twice a year instead of biweekly.

I am a HUGE fan of Mirena and recommend it to everyone.

Interesting. My OB told me the hormones in Mirena also up the stroke risk. The FDA website also says Mirena should be used "with caution" if the patient has migraines, which is the same warning they give for the Pill. I took the Pill for years. I finally found one that actually caused my migraines to go away, but I went through a ton of them before I found that one. Unfortunately, the hormone in Mirena didn't work that way for me.

I got a month or two ago. Happy so far. I love not having to remember to take a pill. Oh yea and I got pregnanct while taking the mini pill so I wasn't doing that again!

I'm going to follow this because I've been curious as well. I got a copper IUD 2 years ago. I've made an appointment to have it removed as it has made my period extremely long (7 days when it was only 3 before) and heavy. I had choosen the copper IUD over the Mirena as I was worried about the weight gain some people have. Interesting to see no one has mentioned that as a side effect. I wish I'd gone with the Mirena and am considering getting it instead of the copper IUD.

I've had mine for like 8 months now and love it. I don't get a period on it and it's awesome not to have to think about birth control or buy tampons. I haven't experienced weight gain, but then I got it at like 2 months post-partum so it make sense that I've lost weight since then. I was initially concerned about the hormones since birth control pills had caused some issues for me in the past, but my OB said that the hormones are so localized that they usually don't cause issues, and they haven't for me so far.

I'm on my second Mirena. The only downside is that insertion and removal are not pleasant. (But that only happens every five years.) I love the fact that I don't have a period. No side effects.

Guess I'm the only one who hated it! I had it inserted after my DD turned 1 and hated every second of it!! I gained weight, had terrible acne, and constantly felt pregnant (bloated, crampy, etc.). Couple that with the fact that I didn't get my period, and I was constantly worried I actually WAS pregnant.

I have PCOS, so that may have something to do with it, but as soon as I got it removed and went on Yaz, I was able to lose weight, and my skin cleared up within a couple of weeks. My periods are still really light, but I like the reassurance of seeing it every month for some reason!

I've had it in for 2+ years now starting about 10 weeks PP, so far no issues. I still do get a very light cycle, but I've always had very heavy ones when not on HBC, so light is good. I lost all my pregnancy weight by 6m PP and have maintained that weight for the last 2 years, so I think on the weight front I seem to be doing alright.
I prefer Mirena over Depo (which I was on for about 2 years and experienced a decent amount of weight gain).

I got it 8 weeks pp and within a week my milk supply was cut in half. I stormed into my doc's office and made them take it out. I'm glad I did because I didn't realize it at the time but it was making me a little crazy too. I had been on depo before DD with little weight gain (well not from the shot at least) so I'll be headed back to that when I'm done BFing.

The Mirena doesn't/shouldn't impact your serum hormone load, so those "side effects" you experienced that went away with Yas were probably not side effects at all, but rather your natural hormonal imbalance (due to PCOS).

I had a Mirena for 18 months between pregnancies and will get another after I deliver. I loved it and loved not having a period. You still cycle and still ovulate, so if that's something you are in tune with for your body (mittelschmerz and all that), you can still track it - just no bleeding. I spotted for about 2 months after getting mine, but I got it postpartum and my doc said that it could be lochia and not really the mirena - there wasn't really a way to know.

A friend of mine got one and had really bad cramping for 2 weeks after insertion, but that went away and she wont need to deal with anything for the next 5 years or so, so it was worth it for her. I had no insertion cramping (again, I was postpartum, so that might have influenced it).

It was a disaster for me, it caused insomnia and anxiety so bad I had to take disability leave from work, and I has no history of these problems. Took four months before an astute dr recommended the mirena be removed. Mirenas website lists anxiety and mood disturbances occurring in about 10% of women. Just be on alert, I know it works great for many women.

I've had my Mirena for almost two years and I love it. I'd never had a problem with the pill, but after having DS I was having trouble remembering to take it (problematic with the mini pill). So I switched, and have been thrilled.

I still get my period, however, it is much lighter than my non-BCP periods are. It is one of the reasons I went with Mirena over Paragard. Love it. Love it. Love it.
