Most popular baby Names 2014

So when these articles come out do you peek at them to make sure your baby name is on it, or do you cross your fingers it hasn't suddenly spontaneously appeared? (I'm in column B, as a "Jenny" from the 80's I was always one of at least three in every school classroom. Hated it.)

Re: Most popular baby Names 2014

  • Loading the player...
  • We looked at the lists to make sure our choices weren't on it. Our only reasoning was to avoid having several others in school with the exact same first/last combo (our last name is super common).
  • I don't but that's primarily because we like classic names that are like always in the top 50 forever. Fads come and go, but the classics tend to stay mostly put. Henry is top 20ish at the moment. It may raise or lower some but I know it's popular, but whatever. It's not a trendy name it's a timeless one!
we have opted for family names so their popularity does not affect our decision

DS is a Jr. (Michael) which is also my fathers name, Michael is usually in the top 10, looks like it didnt make it for 2014.... so sad ;)

DD will be Torrey which is both my mother's maiden name and my sisters name (but she goes by TJ).  I doubt I will see that on any lists anytime soon

  • I did check it for ours, Quinn but knew it wouldn't be. But I also checked the "rising names" list to see and it's not on there either.

I'm a Nicole and was always 1 of 2 or 3 in a class and hated it so I knew I wanted a name that wasn't going to be that way.

  • I do check them. I was 1 of 5 in my class and don't want that for my child. We're trying to choose a non-trendy name outside the top 100. I also check the "rising names" lists to those avoid those.

  • I saw a girl on facebook put "Thank god my baby names aren't on either list Hashtag: Keepin it unique" ...can't wait to see what "unique" means haha. I think it's rude though because we have #11 on the girls list.
  • One Jenn to another, I feel your 1980's every kid is Jennifer pain so I did list watch and went with something classic that wasn't in the top 50. That being said, I realized after DS was born that name trends can change quickly. Ronan is a highly recommended name by many and I've run into several in my town. Only 1 of the other Ronan's I've met was older than DS and people are starting to use it as a girls name.

  • My husband and I definitely wanted to avoid popular names. His first name is Matthew, but he goes by his middle name because there's always a plethora of other Matthews no matter where he goes. I have a very uncommon name and have always loved it. It was always a novelty running into someone else with the same name.

  • I think naming culture has changed a lot. When Jennifer was top name, every third child got it. I only know two Sophia's though. I think there is a lot more distribution now.
  • We don't really care where our names show up because they are all either family names or mean something special to us.

Comes out in May of the following year.

I'm pretty up on popular names, and wanted to avoid one unless it was one of the classics like @dorothygale01 said. I don't mind popular, I'm not as big on trendy. That said, our name rose to break the Top 200 last year and I freaked.

  • I've always liked classic names and have had at least one of each of my baby names chosen since I was a child.

I do check the lists and I do secretly hope the names aren't in the top 20. All of the Jennifers and Michaels, for example, went by their last names in my grade (3 of each out of a class of 30). I don't want that for my kid (maybe f we had a cool last name, but we don't).

I was super bummed to see my girl name so high on the list (Violet). DH wants us to spell it the French way (Violette - french, like my DH) but we live in an English speaking province so I feel that might be a burden on our hypothetical girl. Yet, his last name is french, so perhaps that helps. Who knows. No matter for now as our baby is a boy. :-)

I tried for a loooooooong time to convince my parents to change my name to Jenny when I was little.

Yes, I totally check the list to make sure my names are not on it. Doesn't matter really though. When I named my first two, (Henry & Nolan) neither were in the top 100 (YAY!). Now they are both becoming pretty popular (BOO).

ETA: Confession - amack22 I totally posted something similar on FB. ;)

I think one of my names is considered popular/ classic (Claire) and the other is rising/maybe considered trendy (Isla). My husband and I love them both and they were not in the top 20, so we are ok with that!

Edited to add: I haven't run into any Claire's or Isla's in my area. I know for State Claire was around 89, but 48 for the country. Isla is around 169 for the country and not in top 100 for NJ. We did check the SS list state and country before we made a final decision.

  • I tried not to obsess to much with checking the lists but I did see yesterday that our LO's name, Everley, is on the rise, somewhere in the 300's. So I guess that's okay. Though I thought it was going to be more rare than that.

I'm also a Nicole and at one point I had two other best friends in school, not just classmates, with the same name. Fortunately they both went by Nikki with their last initials, so I got to still be Nicole. I didn't want that for our girl
  • I would prefer that our sons name isn't super popular, I have an unusual name never met another with my name) and DH name is "normal". as I am telling people we are naming him Emmett, I am hearing a lot about how popular it is becoming because of the Lego movie and Twilight series (which DH claims if he would have known ahead of time that Emmett was "a vampire name" he wouldn't have liked it so much lol) .  It's not on the current list you posted, and hopefully it stays that way ;-)  But, his name isn't changing so hopefully he wont have a class full of other names (I don't think it will be that popular)

Everly/Everley is on the rise/trendy I believe. I met one a few weeks ago in NJ who was three. She was a cutie.

@erobbins09 My old lady dog is Emma as well :)  But she came with her name and was named 11 years ago!

SO many of these names are now used for dogs....cracks me up....or maybe I've just worked in a the veterinary industry for too long.

We like human names for our dogs, but chose Vito (the Godfather!) and Enzo (Ferrari founder).  Poor fourth dog didn't get a human name :)

  • I woke up just now btw wanting to really backpeddle on something I wrote in my original post last night... Like I said, DH and I have selected two names that are in the top 200 but not top ten (we like Beckett and Benedict) to pick from on the day of... But if we loved a name that happened to be top ten we wouldn't NOT use it exclusively for that reason. I am realizing that that sounded judgey and I didn't mean it at all that way, so I apologize if I offended anyone.
  • I think naming culture has changed a lot. When Jennifer was top name, every third child got it. I only know two Sophia's though. I think there is a lot more distribution now.

I agree with this too.... Good point

We love our names either way, although if we were torn between two different names it might make a difference.

    ETA:
I laughed out loud at this:
"We know celebrities get a hard time for naming their kid, like, Cookie Tractor, but there’s something to be said about originality, right? Let’s mix it up next year. And we’re not just talking about spelling your kid’s name with a “Y.” That doesn’t count."
So true! "You-neek" spellings don't make a name unique.

Ours was number 3 on the list in this article! But DH adores the name Olivia, and I like it too. So...oh well. Olivia she shall be. :)
I love Olivia (umm... hello strong female character, Olivia Benson fro SVU).. Unfortunately I was told I couldn't use this name bc it reminds my DH, BIL & SIL of BIL's girlfriend in HS... I may have shed a tear if I didn't love our other name so much!

  • All of the names my MIL has suggested; Sophia, Olivia, Isabella, Aiden are super trendy. While I like them all, being a Christine, I too am a member of the "I Have an 80's Name" and "Way too Many in my Class" clubs. That being said, we're considering Olivia for a middle name if we have a girl.

We're also fans of classic names. So, we'll likely end up with something top 20-100ish.

  • I have 9 siblings so its hard to come up with a name not already in the family...

I really like the classic names and have an Emma, a Megan, and soon a Caroline. Surprisingly enough, we have yet to meet another Emma (other than an adult) in our church, school, etc. I've met other Megan's, but spellings vary.

Oh, I guess I have met another Emma child (a patient at a former office), but we don't personally know any other than the adult Emma.
  • I would prefer to not be in the top ten, but I'm not checking names against the list when I'm trying to figure out names. I don't have a top ten name; my mom just liked Archie too much when I was born. ;)
  • We always choose classic names as well (but not trendy). Both of our girls have names that are in the top 100 but not the top 25. Both of the names we have chosen for this LO (team green) are in the upper half of the top 100 as well.
