Age 32, no high risk, don't get genetic testing covered? Anyone else in the same boat?

I will be 32 at time of delivery, no history of losses but had to do IvF due to male factor. Which I think should warrant pregnancy/fetus genetic testing, but apparently I'm the only one.

Other than the regular NT-finger stick and second trimester quad, I don't get the option of insurance paying for genetic testing for chromosome abnormalities (and the selfish bonus of sex identification).

Anyone else in this boat? Anyone considering paying cash oop to get a genetic work up?

I want to be as prepared and informed as medical technology allows.

if your NT results show high odds for one of the chromosomal abnormalities, at that point they'll offer you additional testing to verify, and it'll be covered.

I think what is being covered is standard of care and it's pretty good.

I was pregnant with my first at 32, and was happy with the NT Scan as my pre natal testing.

  • NT came back normal at 1.2, but I would prefer a battery of genetic tests. I'm a medical person, I guess I'll just have to relax.

We have some friends with a child with a micro deletion and a subsequent syndrome. It's awful to watch. He can't speak, delayed development both physical and emotional, it's just heartbreaking. I keep wondering if that happened to our child and how I would deal.

Plus major physical, medical problems of every organ system .
  • I asked about it and my midwife said I'm low risk and young so I would have to pay a minimum of $2,700 out of pocket to have further testing. No thanks! Although I am dying to know the sex.

  • I had four losses and the bloodwork isn't covered. So I did the NT scan and integrated screening. If my risk is elevated then insurance will pick up the other bloodwork. Otherwise, I was quoted $975 OOP.

  • Thanks for the replies, mommies. After the difficulty of IvF, which was a process to wrap my head around, I don't want any other major surprises if I can help it.

Just stinky to be in that grey area of 32 with Ivf, progesterone supplement til 7 weeks, seems like it warrants done testing. I'll chill. Just jealous of those 35 year olds.... :)
  • Yeah, but heard recently I a medical lecture that very early interventions show huge huge promise and improvements for kids on the spectrum.
  • I'll be 34 at delivery, and I don't get any of those things, no NT scan either.

I had a dating U/S at 8w and won't have another U/S until 20w. We will do the quad screen at 16w, but until then nothing.

I'm high risk because I have severe HG (been admitted several times for fluids and vomiting control). I'm on a continuous Zofran pump now which has kept me out of the hospital. But while HG makes me high risk, it doesn't have any effects on the babies genetics, so they don't offer extra testing (the real worry with HG is maternal health, and low birth weight of baby, which is monitored at the anatomy scan and later).

It's hard waiting, but I count myself lucky. To only "need" an U/S at 8w and not again until 20w is a good thing. I had quick U/S at 10.5w, but that was in the ER and only because they couldn't find the HB on Doppler (I was there for HG complications). Baby was fine tho.

TL:DR.... It's a good thing to not need the extra screening, but yes, waiting, worrying, and thinking what if is brutal. I try not to think about it. Our quad screen is in Jan at 16w and I'll make my self neurotic if I obsess over it. I totally understand how you feel :-/

Pretty much this. I have one more u/s to look forward to at 20w, but other than that, that's it. I am now and will be 34 at delivery. My ins only covered a percentage of the NT scan and bloodwork and since they just nailed us for $400 for the initial visit and dating u/s, we have passed up the NT scan and b/w. It's a little nerve wracking, but there's really no family history and my OB is not concerned with anything, so we are just rolling with it. It would have been neat to have gotten a peek a Fergus one more time, though.

  • I had some genetic testing done even before I got pregnant. IDK if it makes a difference as to the fact that my husband and I are both Jewish, but i had a whole slew of test ran on my blood to make sure that I wasnt a carrier for different diseases I came back as a carrier for one so he had to go in and they ran some additional tests. It was all covered under insurance. Am I just one of the "lucky" ones that insurance would cover these ( they took about 15 VIALS of my blood the first time around).

  • From what I have been told so far, all of the testing is covered for me (29 years old). I am not sure if this is a state thing (NH) or an insurance thing (United PPO). I am 12 weeks and just had my first round of testing this week, ultrasound and blood. I believe there are a few more over the course, and then additional tests barring results.

This sounds like the NT scan and associated blood test, which is covered by most insurance. That bloodwork is not the same as the newer fancy genetic tests that can tell you with 99% accuracy on several genetic conditions as well as sex. The standard workup will not tell you the sex. The fancy genetic testing is generally only covered by insurance for high risk moms, though I've heard that some doctors offices have a deal with the companies to offer them for $100 or less out of pocket. Mine doesn't. If it did, I'd do it.
  • 31, still did the test since I don't want any issues.
However, all tests are covered for me and I don't pay of out pocket.

My OB told me that IF the blood test came back and didnt look so good the additional tests she would send us to get WOULD be covered because it would make me be considered a "High Risk" Might be someone to look into.

I've heard that as well. But I'm definitely not going to sit around hoping that the NT scan uncovers issues that would make the full genetic screen covered. I'd prefer to have my NT scan look super low risk. :-)
  • You know, after reading the couple of posts that have popped up with people getting less than desired test results. I feel truly horrible that they are now full of worry and anxiety. And actually grateful that we decided not to get the test. Selfish, I know, but the thought of all of that extra worry over what is essentially hundredths of a percentage sounds like the worst kind of limbo ever. My thoughts are definitely with the ladies who have concerns!

  • I just don't understand why some people I know who have Medicaid and are in their late 20s get all the bells and whistles, but yet if you have commercial insurance they're sticklers for freebies..
Counsyl informed preggo test is 1000$.
Everyone else is about the same, try said on websites that if Insurance states they will cover, if they back out, the most you will be stuck with is $250.

I even looked up all recruiting clinical trials to see if any cell free DNA trials were occurring within a 2/3 hour drive of me.

Guess I'll just have to rely on praying and healthy diet with plenty of organic vegetables and exercise...

Meh. Thanks for the cool stories ladies. Except you, miss 29 year old with testing covered. I'm envious.

Go eat some yummy romaine for dinner ladies, I'll catch you all later.

  • Can I ask why you didn't opt for PGD with the IVF?  I'm 30 and we did IVF because of MFI as well.  PGD was offered to us, but we chose not to do it (as we had already found out I am not a cystic fibrosis carrier, which is what DH has).  I'd like to do the NIPT testing, but since I'm considered "low-risk", I don't expect my insurance to pay for it.  The NT scan is covered.

  • Pgd was 5000$, and I'm not a carrier for any genetic disorders. I wish to god I had paid it now though.
