Complete Placenta previa. Worried.

I had to go to the ER tonight due to bleeding. I called my doctor and they brought me right in. When we got there, DH mentioned that at my anatomy scan the tech said my placenta was close to my uterus. The ER doc checked my anatomy scan and said "oh you have complete placenta previa. They didn't tell you?" Didn't tell me???? The tech and follow doc never told me. My placenta is covering my cervix completely. Long story short they took me to Labor and delivery, monitored me, and sent me home with pelvic restriction. No sex, no exercise, and no heavy lifting. They say it could rupture my placenta and cause me to bleed again. Also, if I bleed to many times I could be admitted to the hospital for weeks to make sure I don't bleed anymore. I am freaking out. I need advice from anyone who has experienced this. What a rough night :-S

  • I don't have any advice/knowledge on this but just wanted to say that I hope now that you know and can take it easy that everything goes well and you don't have any major issues!

  • I'm so sorry!
I have heard of this happening early on for many, and then the placenta moves and all is well. I hope the same for you. Hang in there.
  • I'm a bit naive on this subject. Did your placenta move since your anatomy scan from partial to full? That seems like an awful big oops we forgot to mention...

I am so sorry for what you are going through.
  • @DawnLilly‌ the tech saw it but was not allowed to diagnose. When she shows the doctor, he is supposed to noticed it, diagnose it, and tell the patient. She said the doctor "was in a meeting". So he never came in. So I assumed everything was OK. Unfortunately, I had a complete previa the whole time and it was never mentioned. The OBG on call last night said she is going to have a long talk with them about how bad they messed up. I could have had sex or worked out again and caused some major damage. Hopefully it moves up. But I will be closely monitored now.

@NariaDreaming‌ thank you for the suggestion! I am going to check out the high risk board to get some info now.

  • I'm sorry you're dealing with that.  Hopefully it moves so you don't have as much of a risk for the rest of the pregnancy.

I can't believe your DR missed this and if this happened to me I would be switching Doctors ASAP!

  • @dj99‌ thank goodness it was not my primary OBG that missed it. The anatomy scan was done at the hospital with a different tech/ doctor than my regular group. I see my OBG next week and will be talking to her about it at length. Thanks for the good thoughts!

  • I did not know I had a previa till I went to the hospital a week ago with bleeding. I also had an abruption. My bleeding has since stopped and things are better. But I am on pelvic rest and not picking up things that are two heavy. My Ob has just said to expect more ultrasound to check the baby and if I start bleeding a lot to go straight to the hospital. It is scary but hopefully we will all be fine and have happy healthy baby's. On the bright side my on said their is still so much more growing to do it will more then likely move away! Fingers crossed
  • I also had a complete previa with my first that the high-risk doctor who did my ultrasound never told me about so I found out like two to three weeks later at my regular OB visit.  I was put on pelvic rest and then had a follow-up ultrasound about 10 weeks later which showed my placenta had moved up enough to not be an issue.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
