I really really hate "I'm not doing anything wrong so I don't care if you erode my civil rights" argument. There's a straw man if I ever saw one.
Yes, yes, a million times yes.
Are street cameras a civil rights violation? Pretty sure there's no expectation of privacy....what am I not thinking of?
_---------------------------- No, you're right, there is no expectation of privacy when you are in public. I just mean in general. You hear this argument a lot when people want to pass laws that slowly but surely take away bits and pieces of our civil rights. This was a very popular refrain when the Patriot Act was debated.
I am supposed to wait overnight and if it hasn't gone away I will call in the morning. I put in the hydrocortisone almost 2 hours ago and it has done zilch.
@ggandlee Thanks for the advice! I certainly was planning on T getting the booster, I just wasn't sure if it was ok while he was sick. I was wondering if they would have me reschedule. I'm planning on it unless they tell me no when I bring him tomorrow.
@sing2phins that makes sense and I agree with you.
Do you think that having officers wearing cameras would help at all? I feel like with all of the social media and all of the information we have access to now there has to be some way to hold the officers accountable for being able to provide proof to support their actions in these cases.
I have lots of feels on the LE issue. And my reaction is to get defensive because MH is a Law Enforcement Officer for the Federal Government . But that doesn't mean I think all LE can do no wrong.
There are def bad seeds out there. I have had the unpleasant experience of dealing with one myself. My husband has worked with one as well. But I have also seen them get their asses handed to them and lose their job because of wrong doing.
There isn't a giant conspiracy theory to cover up the wrong doings. Does it happen? I am sure it does. But it's not the norm. It's a rarity.
The media doesn't help matters. All kinds of focus goes to cases where a "white cop shoots unarmed black man". But there are plenty of people of all races in similar scenarios that are shot/killed as well but you never hear about them.
One of MH fellow officers was killed by "an unarmed man" that he stopped to tell to put his dog on a leash. Just because an individual is unarmed doesn't make them incapable of doing bad things.
I am just hearing of this other recent case (yes I have apparently been living under a rock). So I have no thoughts in reference to it. But just want to say that yes I agree that all cases need to be fully investigated by outside parties.
It's a good thing that those cases are being talked about. They need to be talked about. It's very important that they be talked about. I'm not just talking about in cases of Black vs White but all cases. That's how change happens.
I had a lot of other stuff to say but I realized that it sounded ragey. I can't find the right words to express my feelings. I want someone to understand but I just don't know what to say.
@Sing2phins I'm not going to quote because it's long...
But you said the exact same thing MH said. "It doesn't happen overnight, it's a slow process." That's what I need details on. I'm not going to take his word for it. How do you know for sure that's what will happen?
Feel free to pm me to avoid bringing down the thread.
It's actually an interesting thing besides I think I've already brought down enough.
@guiltypleasures You only make our threads better.
But no one else is commenting on this but us, so either everyone is busy, asleep or feels uncomfortable posting.
You're sweet! I think that it's a little bit of everything. Topics like these are uncomfortable but that's a good thing. If they were common and comfortable then it wouldn't give people big things to think about. Thinking is good.
I finished my out of town xmas shopping and DH is 2/3rds done, haven't started LO yet. I know 100% DH hasn't done any. I do about 95% of the shopping but there are certain family members on DH's side I refuse to shop for because I always get in trouble. So now he has to do those family members and wrap all the gifts.
@tgrimes1980 Obviously I'm not @Sing2phins but I agree with her argument. To answer your question, you don't know for sure, but I don't think that's the standard you want to apply. What you can be sure of is once any authority in any arena is relinquished to the government, particularly in the name if public safety, it is a very slow process getting it back, and you likely never would. Be very careful about what rights you are willing to trade for security.
ETA: It is always going to be a slow process. Like the case mentioned by Sing with the voyeur, laws are adopted but then they can be expanded to apply to various types of situations. Each time a new case is brought forth that would challenge it and the law is upheld, that only strengthens precedent.
I'm waiting for DH's gift to arrive. It should be here Friday. I'm hoping that it doesn't come early so I can hide it without him snooping. I'm buying all the kids in the family books. I'm halfway done. I'm so excited I love book shopping. I got a lot of activity books for the younger kids, some fun pop up books for the kids that are just starting to get into reading on their own, and my niece is getting HP.

We bought DHs little sister the whole HP set last year. I got them off better world books for 4 buck each!!!! With shipping it was like $35 they weren't new and 2 were missing dust jackets but she didn't mind. I told her if she wanted them all at once used was the only way it was happening.
@peachsmama Its more the mom of the kids gets upset at the gifts I give. I start shopping in July usually (this year total fail) and get really great deals so I stay on target for the limit DH's family sets for each kid. That way if I find something I know they will love I can wait for it go on sale. And for 3 years in a row I was accused of breaking the limit to make the kids like me better then her (her own kids which I doubt would happen over a little xmas gift).
The last year I was accused of going over was the best because I was way under the limit for each of her kids. When she accused me of going over again, I whipped out the receipts, hoping that would end the stupid fight. Well the mom was then upset that I spent less on her kids then the other families' kids....I just couldn't win.
After that I told DH no more shopping for that family cause I can't deal with another drama fight just for drama's sake. I "accidently" told DH's aunt this so it got around that DH does his side of the family's shopping and no more questions about if we went over the price limits.

I really want to get her the set that comes with the trunk but DH says that I should only buy them for her one at a time because all the other kids are only getting one book. I want to just buy the trunk for myself and give her each book as we finish them.
@cagoldi I'm not disagreeing with what anyone has previously said. But again, no one can answer my question. Maybe I'm just looking at all the positive things street cameras could provide, like when they found that kidnapped girl. Pretty sure if that was my kid, I'd thank the lord for the cameras.
ETA: I need to finish up some work & get some laundry done. Didn't want anyone to think I posted & ran.
I think Sing did answer that though with her response about a reasonable expectation of privacy and how that no longer exists. Street cameras themselves may not be bad news but the premise by which they are able to operate can lead to situations in which your rights are compromised, as she illustrated with that decision she linked. So while you would support the cameras for a perceived benefit, by the same token you are sacrificing rights.
@guiltypleasures I can empathize with you on this a bit. I recently had a talk with my son 12 y/o son (who desperately wants an air soft gun) about what to do if he is ever confronted by a PO in any situation. We are a mixed race family (there's a lot in the mix) and I know I will always worry about my eldest in this regard slightly more than my younger two, just based on how he looks. It is such a difficult line to walk between those lessons you described. My son's heritage is celebrated within our family, and while I know he can't always be within our little protective bubble, I still try to extend the bubble as far as I can, as long as I can.
I remember growing up that many of the women in my family had a lot of shame about our ethnicity. A few still insist we are a different race than we actually are. I think that was more damaging than opinions of others, or at least it amplified them. One message that I love that came out the ferguson situation is to not to define the death as a tragedy because "He was a good kid" but rather to frame it as "Black lives matter". Good kid, troubled kid, brown kid, white kid...all of their lives matter equally.
Are we related? Some people in my family are rather ridiculous about this.
@guiltypleasures It would be awesome if we were, I would know who I could get drunk with at family reunions.
I have an aunt and a cousin that do not get along. My aunt likes to make fun of my cousin (who was adopted from Mexico) because she is A MEXICAN.
FTR, we are also Mexican, but we have like 2 drops of Spanish blood, so this makes us SPANISH and therefore European, and therefore superior to THAT MEXICAN.
I'm Italian on the other side, and they are just as BSC.
@Dapostrophe My family is a crazy mix of everything. When I was younger I remember an intense argument about which side of my dad's family has more White and my mom's side was totally unacceptable because my grandmother is Cuban and Native American. Yeah...I'm pretty happy that we got stationed away from the BSC. Thanks Navy.

It's a fine mix, because you are so good-looking!
And not to turn this into a @Dapostrophe love-fest (why not??), but yeah...she's gorgeous!
LOVEFEST IN CHICAGO!!!
I will cook Italian, Cuban, Irish, Mexican and dress like a native American if you guys come.
Yes! Most of my dad's side of the family lives there.

My Mexican family members are from Chicago.
I've mentioned it before, but my dad's family (Irish) is really into genealogy. Whenever they find more English relatives they get upset. A few years ago my aunt announced she had found connections to Longshanks and they were all horrified.

Exactly. *THIS* is the slippery slope.

Have you read the Merry Gentry series yet? It's a pretty good story with lots of great sex jammed in. It's all fairies, magic, and sexy sexy men.

My Irish side is awesome.
The Mexicans in the family are wonderful, but we're only related by marriage.
