Myth Busters~~Pregnancy edition

I should be working, but I just have not found the motivation yet!

I don't think I have seen anything regarding ridiculous pregnancy myths so here it goes!

What are some of the most absurd myths you have heard about pregnancy? Any of them you have found to be true?

I actually think there is truth to that one. BRB, I'm going to try to dig up something on that.

I think the silliest are the old wives tales for the sex.

  • Let's see....

Heartburn for hair - my oldest was born with a full head and not a bit of heartburn

If the hair on the back of the youngest childs head circles one way its the same sex and in the other the next baby will be the opposite sex (we had a good laugh about that one during my Anatomy U/S with the nurse)

Heartrate determining sex - dr said if that was true, my youngest would've been a girl and he most definitely is not.

Carrying low for a boy, high for a girl

pretty much every other sex prediction method. My two pregnancies were completely opposite in every way including the various myths and both were boys.

  • gotta love those old wives tales!

Agggh, my coworker keeps telling me I'll have a girl because of this, too.

Also, my FIL said he could tell if I was going to have a boy or girl based on what foods I was craving.  um, ok?

That's crazy about heartburn and hair! I wonder what the common thread is.

  • Oh, another is if you were a big baby you will have big babies. Thank the lord that that is not true! My babies aren't tiny (both were around 8 lbs... second was early even and hit the 8lbs!) but they weren't nearly the 10 lbs I was!

  • The heart rate OWT was wrong for me with DS. I can't remember the details, but "they" say if the hb is higher, it's one sex, if it's lower-it's the other.

  • That seems to be the "issue" with the OWT because everyone hears them differently. I was told a low heart rate was a boy, but my sis-in-law said it meant girl. In my opinion, it's already been decided. So no wives tale can "tell" me what my child is.

My SIL gave me her copy of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and the book said that the heartburn/hair thing is true. It also said that if you're super hungry while pregnant, you might be having a boy.

I was kind of surprised that they would endorse things like this! I think the heartburn/hair idea was supported by a study done in 2007, but I think I remember hearing that studies performed since then have refuted the idea?

  • The hair one was true for my youngest. Heartbeat is the one I find most annoying. So wrong. So often.
  • My BIL refuses to let his pregnant wife drive because "pregnant women have more wrecks because their hormones make them road rage". He seemed shocked that DH "lets" me drive. He told him I'm BSC without the pg hormones. I was still driving at 41 weeks with my first.

Oh and the other crazy cakes myth I've heard is that stretching can make the placenta separate from your uterus.

The hair/heartburn myth proved true for us. But the HB was false. DS always had a HB in the 160s.

  • I was wondering about driving. I didn't have a car with my older two. And I was so huge Im afraid I won't be able to reach the steering wheel lol.
  • @KellyinHB, that otter has a perfectly good belleh on which to crack clams! (seriously one of my favorite episodes.)

I don't have any new myths to add, but this is one of the reasons I'm waiting to say anything. Hearing the myths may turn me blind from all the eye rolling.

  • The hair is somewhat true. The hormone that produces hair on the baby can cause heart burn for the mom. But lots of things cause heart burn as well so it doesn't necessarily mean your baby will have a full head of hair either.
  • The hair/heartburn was not true for me.  I've never had heartburn (knock on wood) and both of my babies had a lot of hair.

The big things that bother me is eating deli meats and hot dogs.  I had people outraged that I'd do that especially during my first pregnancy.  I enjoy turkey sandwiches!

That's the thing for me, I'm always exhausted.

  • For me, the biggest myth was that I HAD to have my birth plan written out and finalized in great detail before I went into labor.  I knew a very (pushy and annoying girl) who insisted that I would want A, B, and C (all the things that were important to HER) while I was delivering.  Truth be told, no doctor ever asked for my birth plan and it ended up being perfectly fine even when my plan to deliver naturally changed and I got the epidural.   I just can't stand people who say "well this was how it was for me, so you'll be the exact same way."  THAT is a huge myth in every way.
  • I'm jealous of you ladies who had babies with hair. I had heartburn all day everyday the whole pregnancy with my first and she was bald until she turned 1!
  • I had horrendous heartburn with my first and she was bald until almost her first birthday.

The myth I've heard is you can't reach above your head or the cord will get wrapped around the baby's neck
    Pregnancy Ticker Anniversary Birthday
  • I have a friend who still SOUNDLY believes that vacuuming or raising your hands above your head can wrap the cord around the baby's neck.

The one that makes me the most crazy is that the gender can be determined by how high/low you're carrying. DD was a girl who EVERYONE told me was a boy. Even after our gender reveal ultrasound. This included random crazies in the grocer's.

Salty for boys, sweet for girls. Never heard about the sickness and sex connection. Also- if you get all fat and blah, it is a girl, if all you have is a cute round belly, it is s a boy.

I ate so many sweets during my first pregnancy.  It was insane.  DS is definitely a boy.
