Non-specific name question

Hey all, help weigh in on a discussion my H and I are having.  We like a name that starts with Z, and I think it's a great name by itself, but our last name also starts with Z.  While I don't mind double initials in general, I feel like Z is such an oddball letter that naming a kid a Z first name with a Z last name comes off as gimmicky.  Plus, he'd be sitting in the back of the class forever.

What do you think?  Is it silly to double up Z or am I overthinking it?

  • I always had a double-T name, until I got married.  One of our girl-name options would give our kid a double-M name.  As long as the two names sound good together (i.e. not weirdly sing-songy) the alliteration is fine, and I don't think it matters if it's a Z as opposed to another letter.

See I worry that people would THINK the double Z is why we're doing it, even if it's not.  And I'm starting to suspect that's why my husband likes it so much...

  • I love double letter names because they seem more put together.

    ie:

    Benjamin Bradley

    Tyler Truman

    Zander Zion

    They just click.

The only names I caution are names that are too "rhymey".

  • Thanks, everyone!  DH will be pleased!  It actually happens that the first and last name would END with the same letter too...but they wouldn't exactly rhyme, they have a different number of syllables, and we'd be planning to use the nickname version of the full name anyway, and it's only the full name that ends with the same letter.  So I don't think that's really a factor.

Haha really wish I could share the name with you ladies, but our last name is stupid unique and, you know, privacy.

  • I will be the lone voice of dissent and state that I wouldn't do it, personally. I am not a fan of alliterative names in general. I wouldn't bat an eye at other people doing it, though.

  • The only letters I would stay away from doubling up are M's and P's. Kids are mean, I wouldn't want my kid to be called M&M or PeePee. Our last name starts with a P and we have had this discussion a with every child.

  • If you love the name, then I say go for it. We are trying to avoid "H" names because our last name begins with an "H" but I haven't come across any that I am in LOVE with so it hasn't been an issue.

  • If your baby is going to be an author, that is an excellent name! People always pick up books at the beginning or the end of a section of books. So ZZ is perfect!

    :)
  • I personally like the idea of two "Z's", your child's name would be very recognizable and everyone could call them ZZ-what a cool nickname!
  • DH and I both have JJ initials. With DD, we fell in love with a J name, and used it. This time around, a few of our top contenders are also J Names. I think we'll keep it up. So I say if you love it do it!

TOTALLY never thought of this.  Now I am going to use this name (if it's a boy) and groom him to be an author.

  • I'm just gonna come out and say this... I don't have any social media so good luck to creepers trying to find me.
    My name is Zoey Zolotas.
Always last ZZ... Just because of alphabetical order situations in the army.
Obvi I'm gonna tell you do it! I haven't really had a problem. :)
ETA- now I'm married so it's not double z anymore.

I've always wondered if your full name started with Zs! Glad you chimed in!
