Should I be concerned with getting my normal spa pedicure (it entails a gentle foot rub) while pregnant? I'm 24 weeks and I keep hearing conflicting stories..
The instructor in my Lamaze class told us no rubbing above the ankle due to blood clots or something, I followed up with my ob who told me that is false. I went and got a pedicure that same day and did not go back to that Lamaze class.
I hear this one all the time. Many women believe this nonsense, but it just isn't true! I've gotten great foot massages and my little one is still trucking along. I've along being lifting my arms above my head too. I know. I know. REBEL! Haaaa. People are crazy.
Yeah ok, it's a silly question. But to be fair to OP, there is a lot of nonsense floating around on the internet about not getting massages on key points of the body to avoid premature labor (the ankle is one such point).
When I was in school, they told us massaging a pregnant woman's ankles can cause her to go into labor. My massage therapist even told me not to let the pedicurist do the massage part.
O_o
Yeah it's even a disclaimer on a lot of spa places, to the point that most spas won't do prenatal massaged in first tri. OP isn't asking a question that is THAT out there.
I get a pedicure every year before Christmas and always select a fun, outrageous color I wouldn't normally pick because my feet are covered most of the time so I get to enjoy it privately for the most part. I'm very much looking forward to it already because let me tell ya, my feet are a freaking mess right now.
I get pedicures every two weeks, along with acrylic fills every two weeks. I go to a place that is well ventilated and sterilizes their equipment. Do what makes you feel good!

Eh she got it no worse than the people who show up here and talk about no sushi no lunchmeat - which have far more substantiation.
Side note - the disclaimer on the 1st tri massage thing isn't about causation at all - it's the same reason companies put disclaimers that peanut butter contains peanuts on the jar (CYA). Since the risk of miscarriage is so high in first tri what they (spas) don't want is to be on the receiving end of having to defend a bunch of law suits (most of which would be dismissed but that still costs time and money) where no causation could ever be established but would be pretty easy to allege. If you think about it - same reason we tell people its bloat in first tri - baby is really tiny, really far down in the uterus, and extremely well protected. So the whole massage first tri thing isn't really about risk to the kid - it's the spas declining to provide a service based on not wanting to defend a bunch of lawsuits when the risk of miscarriage in general is higher during that period and proving causation for a m/c is on it's own difficult.

Oh, I know that, but that's not info that's easily available. All people see is spas refusing to do foot massages because "It's dangerous". At least she's asking if it's true rather than just saying " oh noes, no foot massages evers!".
