@NorthernLghts we have given chicken. Baked it and pureed it but it doesn't really puree, it turns into tiny little balls. So I mixed it with sweet potatoes. She's not the biggest fan. She has just one tooth not even fully out yet. @younglove316 I'm not sure on the answer to that but lo here is 7 months and we haven't tried it. We're also barely getting practice with a sippy cup too because I keep forgetting.
I have given Lo a little bit of chicken and beef. Both times I chewed it for her first then let her try, only a few bites each but she seemed to like it. I have not let her try to feed herself with a spoon, did give her an pancake and she loved playing with it.
@Sanibel21 Salmon is really easy. Get a baking sheet and put a piece of aluminum foil lightly greased with oil over it (for ease of removal after baking). Put filet skin side down and bake at 375 for 30-40 minutes (temp should reach 145).
Is this thred broken now to?? The last post I see is from nov 3?? I have a question though if this is working. How do you keep babies hands warm at night. She sleeps in a fleece pjs an then a sleep sack but her lil hands get cold. I wa thinking of putting socks on her hands but wa worried he wouldn't be able to grab her paci.
At what age should I be giving her the spoon and letting her try to feed herself? Am I behind on this? She will be 8 months on Friday.
I don't know but I think we'll be trying this soon. J is on a puree strike - he refuses to be spoon fed and only wants finger foods but he's not quite dextrous enough to get them in his mouth. He maybe gets the food in 50% of the time.
@walkek85, we had that issue with the dry skin on the cheeks. I put a few drops of jojoba oil in his bath and that did the trick. I quit using baby lotion all together after I started doing the oil. It works so well!
@NorthernLghts, I gave meat before any teeth - I blended it in with baby food to expose him to different textures. Now, I give it to him mixed in and also in small chunks for practice self feeding. The best meats are the ones I cook in the crock pot - they are so soft and melty.
Question: Anyone know a way I can get my baby to nap at another place? He refuses to nap at my mom's house, but used to all the time up until about 7 months. Now he will only nap at home. He nurses before napping and used to take a bottle for other people before a nap. He began refusing the bottle at 7 months too. No more bottles, but he won't drink more than a few sips of milk in the sippy cup, so giving that before a nap just makes him angry. He WILL take milk from a sippy at other times though.
I've noticed some caughing that I believe is related to extra drool from her cutting her first tooth this week. Anyone else had that? Or, should I be more concerned about the caugh? She seems fine and happy, but it's like she's can't swallow all the drool.

I think that's normal. I've known of several babies, including mine, who did that when teething too. As long as it's a light, dry cough, it's probably just the drool tickling their throat.
Posting this again because I think it was lost at the very end of the last page. I'm really hoping someone has some insight or advice.

We sometimes have a hard time napping at other places as well. The only thing I can say that works is to put her down and walk out. She will fuss but eventually fall asleep maybe ten mins and it's all fussing not crying. She is tired just fighting it cause it's a newer place and lots to look at. We usually nurse to sleep as well. Have you tried cups with straws for milk? My lo loves straws for water.
LO had started to stand up in her crib. And when she does, she cries. She hasn't quite figured out how to get back down on her own yet. So when I put her down for a nap, she stands up and cries. Then I go in and lay her back down and leave. And repeat. Is this what I should be doing? Or do I leave her to figure out how to get down? I don't want her to learn that if she stands up, I'll go get her. Although I think she may have already...

How do you teach a baby to use the spoon? My way is apparently not going to work....
No freaking clue. The only time she gets the spoon in her mouth by herself is when she is HUNGRY, and the first one or two bites go straight to the mouth. I figure that's good enough for me, and take the spoon and finish the purée.
This way I'm taking the Dr's advice & "letting her feed herself" without getting too messy.
@babycaps what I do know about croup is that it tends to turn into a regular URI after a few days of the barky cough so a regular cough for another 7-10 days after the barky cough wouldn't be abnornal. And even then, we say with a URI, the cough alone can linger a little longer beyond the 7-10 days. So basically, forever?!? But if he gets a fever now, not peeing 6-8 hours, or resp distress symptoms like grunting, retracting, nasal flaring, then he should be seen again.
Average walking is a year, but up to 16 months is perfectly normal. Crawling is 6-12 months. There is such a huge range of "normal" for those things though.
My question- I've had a super healthy baby aside from a little cold/cough here and there so I'm not sure what to do. Today she has a fever, around 101, and isn't her happy perky active self. At what point do I call the doctor? I don't feel like she's super sick but it's the fever that worries me bc I haven't had to deal with one before.

Good question about the spoon. The only way I get to feed J puree these days is to hand him a spoon to play with. I think he wants to feed himself but he doesn't get that he has to put food on the spoon.
What sort of hair band do mommas use to keep your Los hair clean during feedings. Los hair is starting to get long in the front and I wanted to try and find a soft type headband to pull her hair up and off her face.
It's really what your pedi prefers. For instance mine considers that low grade and not to call until it's 104. Fever just means they are fighting an infection. And a low grade fever is okay to stick around because it burns off the infection. And rest or less activity is going to help kick it as well.
That being said if she seems lethargic then I'd call regardless of temp.
Thanks. Her fever Broke last night and she's much more herself this morning. Will just be keeping an eye on her for the next couple days.

I'll have to try that @bennieangel . LO likes to smack the spoon out of my hand, or fling it or chew it when I give it to him. Maybe letting him "help" feed himself will help.
Can anyone tell me how to get my lo to stop biting!! Since she has gotten upper teeth and two more on the way it has been horrible. Sometimes it's not full bitting but like nippling. She got me good and broke the skin so now I am trying to get that to heal it hurts so bad to have her nurse that side right now! I'm hoping this is just teething related, I feel bad cause I'm all tense while I nurse from a mix of pain and fear!

I put lukes face into my Breast just long enough to make him catch his breath. Then I ended the session for a few minutes. He hasn't bitten since.

Re: spoon I let LO play with the spoon occasionally. Like, rarely. He feeds himself by hand. I only spoon feed oatmeal (if its kind of runny) or yogurt. I didn't let DS1 have a spoon until he was a year old because he didn't eat off a spoon.
Re: hair LO has short hair (about an inch long) so whatever he mashes in is usually pretty easy to get out with a washcloth. DS1's hair is kinda long. We just wash as required.
Suggestions for preventing diaper rash overnight? Lo has been sttn and recently waking with a poopy diaper that I can tell she has had for awhile. This morning I was trying to clean her up and her bum was very red and warm which I imagine is because she had a poopy diaper for so long. She doesn't wake up though to let me know to change her... Before bed we use the really thick desitin all over so not sure there is something else I could be doing.
@younglove316 I can tell you how it went for us, although I'm sure isn't the same for everyone.
We started out trying with a Playtex straw cup maybe ~6 months and she didn't get it at all. (She kept trying to chew on the straw instead of suck.) After trying unsuccessfully off and on with that we got a Dr. Brown's Sippy cup (the same brand as her bottles). It has a really slow flow which is nice for training. We started offering that and she was still chewing so I decided to be a little tricky. I offered a paci to suck on first and then quickly swapped it with the sippy. She sucked on the spout and water came out. That seemed to be enough to make her understand what to do and within a few more times offering she got pretty good at it. Once she had mastered the sippy we tried the same straw cup again just around 9 months and she took right to it.
We started giving LO sips of water from the straw by covering one end of it with a finger so that it traps a little water, then we'd put that in Lo's mouth. After he associated the straw with a drink, we offered it to him traditionally and he started sucking and took to it pretty well, after a bit of chewing on it first. I hope that makes sense.
@younglove316 She just watched me drink fountain drinks all the time. I also think the food pouches of purées kind of helped with learning that sort of sucking motion. So when I had a cup of water with a straw she tried it and got it after a try or two.
My lo one loves water. We usually give her the sippy cup at lunch and dinner. How much breastmilk do you think a ten month old should be taking?? My lo really seems to be dropping her oz. I would say she get around 20 oz maybe less
So I'm calling the pedi tomorrow morning for an appointment, but I thought I'd ask here too.
LO seems to be under the weather ( I think she has my cold),doesn't have a temperature and it looks like she is so close to walking. But she has started laying down while playing. She'll be playing, cruising, and dancing and then lay down on her belly or do the downward dog pose with her head on the ground. Or she pushes herself backwards or spins on her tummy like she can't get her feet beneath her. I think it's just that she needs a little break as she's not feeling well. She doesn't go down for a nap earlier than her normal nap time. She's 10 months old today. I guess I'm wondering if the laying down is something I Should worry about too much.
Thanks @babycaps and @bennieangel I just put her down for a nap. Turns out along with learning to walk and having her first cold she's also cutting a tooth today! No wonder she needs a rest.
I was changing LO's diaper in the living room this morning and went in the kitchen next door to toss it after I was done. When I came back she had made it over to the entertainment center and was trying to climb it. I said "no" and tried to pull her off, but she had a solid grip and was squirming and fussing. I don't know how it happened, but somehow I lost my grip on her and she lost her balance and fell straight backward (from standing) and hit the back of her head on the hardwood floor.
After a second where we were both in shock she started screaming and crying and I started crying as I tried to comfort her. After she calmed down she was practically dozing off in my arms. It was nearly her nap time (she woke up extra early this morning), so I put her on the rug in the dining room to play while I got things ready for her nap, then read her a short book and put her for a nap (she fell asleep immediately). She generally seemed OK after she calmed down, but I still can't help but worry, especially because of how tired she was. I know they usually say they need to fall higher than their height to get hurt, and the logical part of me says she was tired from waking up so early and it being her nap time, then getting so upset. But then I wonder if she could have gotten really hurt and I won't know about it, or think about the "what if" she has learning issues later related to her injury and we'll never know what caused it. So much mommy guilt
I'm probably extra paranoid because I got a concussion from falling from a stand onto asphalt in 5th grade (after being "accidentally" run into by a bully), and had cyclic migraines for years after that. :-/
LO goes to bed early, making it difficult to do a real sit down dinner with us but I want to continue offering her more solids. How do I introduce meat into the mix? Do you guys just give little pieces? Should I be offering her pieces of whatever we had the night before so at least its already cooked when we get home? I generally get a half hour between when we get home and when she wants to go to bed. She gets a bottle before bed and will go anywhere from 6-8 hrs before waking to nurse.
My LO goes to bed pretty early some nights too so I always have premade stuff on hand I either made for her or we ate the night before.
This week was baby meatballs made with ground beef, carrots and oatmeal. I serve them with rice or pasta and veggies that have been cooked or are quick to cook. She usually eats before we do unless I magically get dinner on the table.
When I introduced her to meat I began with really small pieces or puréed. And just kept serving it so she could get used to it. I would also serve it with a fruit and veg she really liked such as chicken with apple and sweet potato. She's used to it now and will eat it herself.
Thanks for the reassurance all. I did call the pedi after she woke up from her nap (after 40 minutes :P) and the nurse there didn't seem too concerned. She said as long as she was acting normal she should be just fine, and to keep an eye out for any vomiting. She was her normal self the rest of the day and ate like crazy, so I'm feeling much better
