Question for moms with overdue babies

so im a second time mother looking to have a vbac. I am told that I am not a good candidate because I have "big babies". My first was 10lbs 3 oz and 4 days overdue (taken by c-section). I don't have any hypoglycemia or diabetic issues but Im trying to cut back on sugar and carbs in hopes of a smaller baby (but not unhealthy!). I never had any contraction with my first and my only hope for a vbac is if I go into labor naturally and complete it unassisted (no petocin or oxytocin) before my due date. So I'm wondering how many woman had an overdue baby the first time, then either another overdue baby or an early one the second time? Thanks for your time.

My son was 10lb 4 oz. I win. J/k ;;) its hereditary for me. So I'm told the same thing. She did say if I wanted I could try. She's definitely vbac friendly- but there's also a risk of emergency c-section. Which I really don't want. We're just playing it by ear.

They removed my son 5 days before due date- no health conditions here either. I'm trying to limit the steak burgers this time... Maybe it will be smaller? Lol

My first was 10 days late and my second was induced 2 days early but I was 3cm dilated. So not sure if he would have been late or not. So I'm really no help.

I was induced at 41 weeks with my first. My second came naturally 2 days before my due date.

Did you have dating ultrasounds (at 7-9 weeks) for both pregnancies? Most doctors do not move a due date unless the dating ultrasound is more than 7 days shifted from the last monthly period. However, the dating ultrasound is more accurate in regards to a due date. If I was looking into a VBAC, I would make sure that decisions were based on my dating ultrasound due date, not my LMP due date.

I was under the impression that ease of birth has less to do with the weight and more to do with head circumference. Am I wrong?

First was induced on my due date because she was big 9lbs6oz. Second I went into labor on my own at 41 1/2 weeks, she was 8lbs12oz. Third I was induced at almost 42 weeks and he was 8lbs2oz (altho they were estimating he would be close to 10 lbs).

Snapdragon, their size can make a difference too. Mine have had almost the exact same head size but my first had her shoulder come out with her head which apparently sometimes happens with larger babies resulting in me tearing. My other two I had no issue pushing out, but they were smaller ( and my body knew what to do as well).

Out of curiosity...does a mother's diet really impact the weight of the baby? I ate like crap and didn't exercise with DD1, and she was 8 lb 4oz. With DD2 I was so careful. Way less sugar and extra fats, and I worked out all the time. I gained the exact same amount, and DD2 was 8lb 14oz! So in my mind, my diet didn't really affect...anything. But scientifically, does anyone know how much, if at all, a mother's diet affects the baby's birth weight?

I don't know how much scientific truth there is in the more weight you gain the bigger the baby. If you developed GD then yes you are at risk for a bigger baby. My Dr specifically told me to watch my weigh gain because it can cause more problems in delivery, but I'm also 40.

Yes- both. His head was huge... But they worry about shoulder displacia. I actually know a little girl who doesn't have full arm function for life because of it. Big is big I guess.

My first was born at 42 weeks and was 6 lbs 14 oz my second was born at 41 and a half weeks 6 lbs 14 oz. both 21 in long. Both they broke my water because I had been having contractions for days but they did not stay consistant till they broke it. Good luck with you v bac and hope you find some one willing to work with you!

A 10 lb. baby does not mean you need for a C Section . I would also watch any doctor that says that. Some OB's claim to be VBAC friendly then come up a reason to open you up at the end. Be careful! I also would double the dating ultra sound to be sure when you are actually due.

If you're really wanting a vbac, I would look for a doctor that will let you go past your due date...I'm also wanting a vbac and my doctor won't push the c-section until 42 weeks (well she prefers 41 weeks, but if I'm insistent and baby is healthy she'll let me go to 42 weeks). Also, lots of moms give birth to a 10 pound baby so that shouldn't call for a c-section without laboring.

For PP who asked, yes their total size does matter in a VBAC, as far as how stretched out, tired, stressed your uterus will get. Bigger baby =more stretching of the uterus, more likely to have a VBAC complication like a uterine rupture. At least this is how Most OBs look at it.

I have a family member who's doctor put her on a diet during pregnancy because he said, "you are too small to be having a big baby". So he must think weight/diet has something to do with baby's weight.

I'd think you should find a healthcare provider who is VERY Vbac friendly. Midwives are awesome at it and do it often. I'd also want to go the full 14 days after the due date before having the pressure to have another C-section. A lot of people don't have their babies by the due date. And most have to wait at least another week to go into labor naturally. Unless there are medical reasons for the C-section, I wouldn't let anyone talk me into it without trying natural! You can do it!! Don't let a big baby stop you either!

I only gained 16 lbs with the first and didn't have GD. I was told cutting back on carbs and sugar may help with the size of the baby. The reason my son was taken in my 40th week is because he was estimated at 10lbs 14 oz and my dr was worried about shoulder displasia. I curious if the combo or the diet and the possibility of early labor would raise the chances of a vbac. I just don't know what my chances of going into labor before the baby gets to big would be. Thanks for all the info thus far. It's been very helpful!
