I don't mean to sound shallow or concerned about looks, this is my first pregnancy and I've already gained 20 pounds and I'm only 24 weeks! My dr said that I need to watch my weight gain, cut carbs and watch how much I eat. But I'm STARVING! I go back in forth about how concerned I should be over the weight. I haven't noticed anything else growing besides my belly. Just wanted to know if anyone else was struggling with weight gain and if there was any advice.
Re: Weight gain
That's about all I got, sorry I can't be more helpful
My OB suggestion was to eat carbs in the morning and then lean out as the day goes. (So juice, muffins, donuts whatever- for breakfast if you're gonna do it).
If you get hungry after around 12-1pm for snacks, try stuff like peanut butter and celery or cottage cheese or Greek yogurt etc.
Just steer clear of white flours and sugars late at night.
Hope this helps!
Maternity clothes can give the illusion that other areas aren't getting bigger- I know that happened to me last time. They are so stretchy and comfy unlike most regular clothes where a few extra pounds would be noticed.
All that said if you are average weight I think you are supposed to gain 25-35 pounds. Even if you gain a pound a week from here on out you will be under 40 so not far off. I wouldn't be very worried!
Also, I totally get the being starving thing.. try to eat more protein and less carbs because that will keep you fuller longer. Also add in fiber. Dark leafy greens, nuts, avocado, peanutbutter, chicken, turkey.. all yummy stuff you can pretty much go to town on that will fill up your tummy, and with the added exercising will keep the excess weight off!
Just like others have said, try to eat a lot of fruits and veggies, lean meats, lean cheeses, yogurts, etc. that fill you up for longer with less calories. And if you drink any caloric beverages like sodas, fancy coffees, etc try to limit those because they can add caloroes fast without any benefit of filling you up.
I know it's a stressful thing to add on to all the other pregnancy concerns, but don't stress too much. As long as you know you're eating healthy, there's not much else you can do.
I recommend some some low impact exercise at least. I used to walk about 3 miles every couple of days when I was pregnant with my son. I like to tell myself it helped my labor as well. I don't know how true that is but I'm sure it did help a little. I've gotten lazy with this pregnancy. I have a gym membership I pay $90 a month for that's been unused for months, I need to start using it again.
I'm also GD and forced to reduce carbs. Trust me, if I could eat all the sweets, pasta, and bread I wanted I would gorge myself sick. Unfortunately my intake is sharply reduced from what I'm used to so I've actually been losing weight. I am unhappy about this and worried I'm somehow depriving my baby but I know the glucose spikes are more dangerous so I'm sticking to it.
In any case, reducing carbs will certainly slow your weight gain. It's not fun and it's not easy, but if you could cut dessert entirely from your diet and limit your carbs to 40-60 per meal, you can eat pretty much anything else you want (cheese, meats, veggies, nuts, avocados, butter, etc.) I eat a lot of protein and fat to make up for my carb loss but because of how it's metabolized it doesn't really stick.
I also exercise nightly - very lightly because of how achy my body is. I take a slow 30 minute walk at an incline while watching TV. It's helped to keep my sugar in check, and movement in general is very good for you and the baby.
Usually I am small, so this amount of weight is very significant on my frame. My doctor NEVER was concerned, she would just laugh and say that it will come off (I LOVE LOVE LOVE that about this group of doctors). I'm blaming genetics, my mother gained 65 lbs with each of her 5 children. ;-)
Just to make you feel better, I had my first baby in April 2009 and was in a bikini by summer time (it took some hard work though - I also think breastfeeding helped).
You will be fine - just enjoy this time and eat healthy (with some sweets every now and then). My main concern was for the health of the baby, the weight will come off later. :-)
With my first I only gained 15 lbs, but only carried until 34 weeks.
I have been walking 4 miles pretty much 4-5x a week and yoga 1x a week. The walking really helps a ton if you are worried.
My doctors haven't said anything to me about it and I figure if I am active, eating generally healthy with a cheat here and there, then I will be fine and bounce back.
Someone said 25-35 gain is the normal range so I wouldn't be worried.

I have only gained about 5 lbs so far, but I was also very sick first trimester and I lost about 7. so I technically gained the 7 back, plus 5 more.
I cant say I have been awesome about my eating, I do eat some junk, but I certainly don't always "eat for two"
I eat when i'm hungry. some days I am starving and I am hungry all day, but others are not quite as bad and I eat "normal" amounts of food.
I am also pretty active. Im not "working out" everyday, but I am busy and on my feet with my job..up and down stairs all day, so I think that helps.
