Weight gain

I don't mean to sound shallow or concerned about looks, this is my first pregnancy and I've already gained 20 pounds and I'm only 24 weeks! My dr said that I need to watch my weight gain, cut carbs and watch how much I eat. But I'm STARVING! I go back in forth about how concerned I should be over the weight. I haven't noticed anything else growing besides my belly. Just wanted to know if anyone else was struggling with weight gain and if there was any advice.

Re: Weight gain

  • Not currently an issue for me, but you may need to change your eating habits. Eat less food more frequently. And maybe drink more water?

    That's about all I got, sorry I can't be more helpful :(

  • I've also gained about 17-20 lbs and I'm 23w (tmrw).

My OB suggestion was to eat carbs in the morning and then lean out as the day goes. (So juice, muffins, donuts whatever- for breakfast if you're gonna do it).

If you get hungry after around 12-1pm for snacks, try stuff like peanut butter and celery or cottage cheese or Greek yogurt etc.

Just steer clear of white flours and sugars late at night. :)

    Hope this helps!

  • This is my second pregnancy, with my first I gained a lot (although my doctor wasn't concerned)! This pregnancy I have been tracking my food- you'd be surprised how quickly your calorie intake can get away from you if you aren't mindful. I've also been making sure to exercise regularly. By no means should you be dieting but those are two things I'd suggest looking at if you are worried. Also take a look at what not necessarily how much you may be eating- I don't think anyone is going to have a problem with you snacking on veggies all day if need be.

Maternity clothes can give the illusion that other areas aren't getting bigger- I know that happened to me last time. They are so stretchy and comfy unlike most regular clothes where a few extra pounds would be noticed.

All that said if you are average weight I think you are supposed to gain 25-35 pounds. Even if you gain a pound a week from here on out you will be under 40 so not far off. I wouldn't be very worried!
  • Im up about 10 pounds in week 20 but I'm going through a phase where I am starving too and know how hard it is. I use the app my fitness pal to keep track of what I'm eating and how many calories I'm taking in each day, which I find helpful in limiting mindless eating and making smarter choices about what I eat. I'm less religious about sticking exactly to a calorie budget than before I was pregnant, but when I do enter in my food I find out I cut back on a lot of little treats that add up trough the day.

Just like others have said, try to eat a lot of fruits and veggies, lean meats, lean cheeses, yogurts, etc. that fill you up for longer with less calories. And if you drink any caloric beverages like sodas, fancy coffees, etc try to limit those because they can add caloroes fast without any benefit of filling you up.

  • I gained 70 with my first so I am conscious of my weight gain this time around. It's all about moderation and small frequent meals/snacks. I constantly have snacks and if I work I eat something about every hr and half. Pretzels, granola and yogurt, string cheese. I also cut out soda and drink tons of water now. Sure I eat unhealthy foods but a small piece instead of the whole thing :). I have only gained 8lbs and I'm 21 weeks.
  • I'm a bigger lady, so I'm under orders not to gain more than ten or so pounds this whole pregnancy. So I had to start out by really watching what I eat. Lots of protein is good, and since I'm already bigger I haven't increased my caloric intake like a slimmer woman would be advised to do. Watch the processed foods and the sugars. Be active - I'm walking at least 15 minutes after every meal if I can manage it and doing other things to remain active as well.

You're going to gain weight, so just try to make sure what you're putting into your body is healthy more often than not. Of course, you're pregnant. You're going to crave and splurge and there's nothing wrong with that at all. Just be moderate.
  • I've literally gained almost 30 lbs. I have been worried about it because I'm afraid I'm going to blow up during this second half, but my doc hasn't said anything so far. My glucose test is 12/9 so I guess I will talk to her about it then. I was at the lower end of a healthy BMI pre-pregnancy, so I know I'm one of those who can technically gain a little more, but I'm still super self conscious about it. I don't have the discipline not to eat!! I also quit smoking when I got pregnant so I am sure that is contributing to the weight gain :/
  • I'm 24 weeks and have gained about 25 lbs. I drink lots of water and eat small meals throughout the day and it's mostly healthy (you gotta treat yourself sometimes!) Some people gain more at the beginning, middle or end of the pregnancy, so I'm trying not to worry too much. My OB isn't concerned since I started out in the lower end of the recommended weight range for my height. Maybe the weight gain will slow down in third Tri. I put on 40 lbs with DD and lost most of it by 6 months PP, so I'm hoping I'll have a similar experience a second time.
  • I got the talk as well. I'm trying to just be mindful of what I eat in total all day. I usually wake up ravenous, so if I eat a big breakfast, I'll try to eat lighter the rest of the day. I'll let you know how that goes...

I know it's a stressful thing to add on to all the other pregnancy concerns, but don't stress too much. As long as you know you're eating healthy, there's not much else you can do.
  • I am really focused on not gaining a ton if weight during pregnancy, so I religiously walk about 3 miles daily. I also keep my meals/snacks small and as healthy as possible. For instance, I usually feel like I'm going to starve to death around 9am, so I make sure that meal is a high protein one. Normally I bring scrambled eggs into work for that one (no cheese or extras, just egg).

  • I gained 20 lbs with my first pregnancy and at 21 weeks I've gained 6 lbs with this one. I had pretty bad morning sickness and lost 7 lbs because of it and like 2 weeks after it stopped I found out I had gestational diabetes, so I've been on the low carb diet and I think it's slowed my weight gain a lot. I wish I could eat all the carby and sweet goodness.

I recommend some some low impact exercise at least. I used to walk about 3 miles every couple of days when I was pregnant with my son. I like to tell myself it helped my labor as well. I don't know how true that is but I'm sure it did help a little. I've gotten lazy with this pregnancy. I have a gym membership I pay $90 a month for that's been unused for months, I need to start using it again.
  • I'm also GD and forced to reduce carbs.  Trust me, if I could eat all the sweets, pasta, and bread I wanted I would gorge myself sick.  Unfortunately my intake is sharply reduced from what I'm used to so I've actually been losing weight.  I am unhappy about this and worried I'm somehow depriving my baby but I know the glucose spikes are more dangerous so I'm sticking to it.

In any case, reducing carbs will certainly slow your weight gain.  It's not fun and it's not easy, but if you could cut dessert entirely from your diet and limit your carbs to 40-60 per meal, you can eat pretty much anything else you want (cheese, meats, veggies, nuts, avocados, butter, etc.)  I eat a lot of protein and fat to make up for my carb loss but because of how it's metabolized it doesn't really stick.

I also exercise nightly - very lightly because of how achy my body is.  I take a slow 30 minute walk at an incline while watching TV.  It's helped to keep my sugar in check, and movement in general is very good for you and the baby.

:p thanks. I am not a shining paragon of weight or anything, but I do try to keep as healthy as I can with the cravings driving me.

  • I've gained 13 pounds. I'm pretty surprised I haven't gained more. I am hungry all the time, and I crave mac and cheese like crazy. I eat it almost every day. I make the homemade kind a couple of times a week with heavy whipping cream and loads of cheese. Mmmm. It's all I want to eat.

  • Please don't stress...I'm on my 3rd baby and know exactly how you feel!  I gained 75 with my first, 55+ with my second and I'm already up like 20 lbs with this one.

Usually I am small, so this amount of weight is very significant on my frame.  My doctor NEVER was concerned, she would just laugh and say that it will come off (I LOVE LOVE LOVE that about this group of doctors).  I'm blaming genetics, my mother gained 65 lbs with each of her 5 children.  ;-)

Just to make you feel better, I had my first baby in April 2009 and was in a bikini by summer time (it took some hard work though - I also think breastfeeding helped).

You will be fine - just enjoy this time and eat healthy (with some sweets every now and then).  My main concern was for the health of the baby, the weight will come off later.  :-)
  • This has all been helpful to me to read! I lost close to 10 lbs in the beginning from ms and have really only gained back what I lost (maybe a couple more lbs). I haven't deprived myself from eating anything but have tried to watch what I am eating. I usually don't care for sweets but have craved them this pregnancy, and try to limit myself to one item a day! I have been increasing protein lately too.

With my first I only gained 15 lbs, but only carried until 34 weeks.

  • I am on my first pregnancy and I gained quick because we went on a 15 day vacation one month into pregnancy...so I figure I gained 10-15 lbs alone there. I have gained 25 so far and I am at week 25. I hit 25 lb gain a month ago and haven't gone up and the baby has grown the most in the past month showing wise.
I have been walking 4 miles pretty much 4-5x a week and yoga 1x a week. The walking really helps a ton if you are worried.
My doctors haven't said anything to me about it and I figure if I am active, eating generally healthy with a cheat here and there, then I will be fine and bounce back.
Someone said 25-35 gain is the normal range so I wouldn't be worried.

  • Try to look at what your eating, if your eating a lot of junk food cut most of it out. But if its the case of just eating a lot of food that's different. Look at your eating habits and see if there is anything you can change or replace with something else. Its fine to put on weight just remember the more you put on now the more you will have to lose when the baby comes to get back to pre pregnancy weight.
  • This is something I'm struggling with as well. It is particularly hard because of my Crohns I'm limited in some of the fruits and vegetables I can eat. I'm trying to be good but feel like I'm failing. Off topic but I tried on a dress for a holiday party and looked like a marshmallow. Wish I could say I love this pregnancy body of mine.
  • This has been really helpful for me to read too. I'm trying not to worry about my weight gain but this is my first pregnancy and it's hard to get used to embracing seeing yourself get bigger. Friends, colleagues & family are constantly telling me how massive I'm getting and it's making me really self-conscious.

I got the "talk" also from my doctor and I'm only up 14lbs at 22+4. She only said that gaining too much makes it harder to get the baby out.

I've never heard that- ever. I gained over 60lbs with my first. Started at 120lbs and fit. He was 7lbs 13oz; no one had any talk with me about my weight gain; and I got him out just fine.
  • Feeling stressed about my appointment tomorrow. I'm pretty sure Ive gained 25 pounds in these 25 weeks of pregnancy. 10 of which are from first trimester when the only way to not feel sick was to eat. I've been trying to eat better but my stomach is still not handling veggies well.
  • I have only gained about 5 lbs so far, but I was also very sick first trimester and I lost about 7. so I technically gained the 7 back, plus 5 more.

I cant say I have been awesome about my eating, I do eat some junk, but I certainly don't always "eat for two"

I eat when i'm hungry. some days I am starving and I am hungry all day, but others are not quite as bad and I eat "normal" amounts of food.

I am also pretty active. Im not "working out" everyday, but I am busy and on my feet with my job..up and down stairs all day, so I think that helps.

  • Well it depends when I should start measuring... According to my routine checks, I lost 14 lbs at 8 wks (had HG), no gain at 14-16 wks, gained 5 lbs at 19-20 wks, and now at 25 wks, I'm up another 6 lbs. so net gain negative 3 lbs since prepregnancy?? My biggest meal is breakfast: egg salad sandwich with cheese, 2 small pieces of hash brown, 1/2 a banana, and a cup of chocolate milk. Then rest of the day, I have one snack and small lunch and dinner. Lots of non sugary fluids... Decaf green tea, water, maybe a juice box - 1-2 x a week. The fluids keep me full/bloated that I don't want to eat or dont feel hunger. No craving for snacks or late night snacks (maybe only once this pregnancy-probably bb having a growth spurt) Pretty much no more food after 8 pm. Minimal exercise - just shopping on weekends!
