Stockings: NPR

I am making stockings this year because we don't have any and I don't like any of the ones I've seen for purchase. One for each hubby and I, one for DS, and one for the baby (so I don't have to do this again and can match the fabric).

I don't know what goes in a stocking. I remember mine being filled with candy as a kid but we don't eat a lot sweets. I have tooth brushes and bubble bath for DS.

What are some other stocking stuffer ideas? Mostly for DS who is 2 but I'm open to all suggestions for any of us.

Re: Stockings: NPR

  • Things I remember getting as a kid: one of those plastic candy canes filled with candy or toys, soft fluffy socks, little cheap toys, a small book, coloring book/colors...

For MH and I we normally do small little gifts that fit in the stocking like a toothbrush, socks, deodorant, cologne/smell good stuff, lotto tickets...

I put a couple kinder surprise eggs in there for DD as well as some mittens, pack of crayons, a small "paint using water" book from the dollarstore - that kind of stuff. A cute straw with a snowman on it - she loves that kind of stuff.

  • We got a lot of candy and socks and note pads and just random misc. items growing up. For DS (who is 19 months), I plan on hitting up the dollar store for snacks and little nick nacks. For DH I'm gonna do things like sun flower seeds, candy, coffee/hot cocoa packs, sharpie/pen.
  • For my 3 year old, we do fruit snacks, goldfish crackers, a new cup with a straw, matchbox cars, a box of crayons and some small toys/knickknacks from the dollar store or dollar spot at Target.

  • We always had an orange in the toe, and a Whitman's sampler box at the bottom. Then my mom got a bunch of misc. little things - toothbrush, bottle of bubble bath or bath gel, lip gloss, pens, little notebooks, toys. But we were all girls. For my boys I still get the orange, chocolate, and toothbrush, and other small things I can find - little Lego sets or stuffed animals.

  • We do stocking twice.  Once on St. Nick day and on Christmas.  We usually do a small toy, a candy treat and a nice big apple.  Last year they got a build a bear outfit instead of a toy.

For the kids (some combination of the following or similar things):

orange or apple in the toe
    toothbrush
    bath colors or paints
    socks or slippers
    fun bandaids
    a new Schleich animal
    a new ornament
some kind of snack or special candy
    small books
    small toy
    DVD
We did the orange in the toe also and H swears it's the weirdest thing he's ever seen. He was baffled when I told him we got oranges every year. Stockings were awesome because they kept us in our rooms and quiet for at least an hour before we woke up our parents. My dad always put them on our beds and we work up to them there on Christmas morning. I love that tradition.

We always did the oranges as well. I always understood it was because citrus was rare and thus a treat in Europe where the custom originated, but apparently there are other reasons.

"Oranges tend to wind up in Christmas stockings, right? Ever wonder why?  Some say it’s from a time when fresh fruit was more difficult to come by and finding an orange in your stocking was a huge treat. But a different version of that beautiful-daughters-distraught-father legend swaps the gold coins left by St. Nick with three gold balls left in each stocking. Understandably, the solid gold balls tradition isn’t so easy to replicate; that’s why their citrus look-alikes have found their way into stockings alongside tchotchkes and baubles, but hopefully not coal!" https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/the-legend-of-the-christmas-stocking-160854441/?no-ist

  • Anything that fits!
    Dollar bin little toys
a top, small ball connected to a paddle,
    slinky,
    maybe some new hair bows,
    dress up jewlery,
    Flashcards
  • My two year old is getting: stickers, a board book, bubble bath, disney cars, a new cup, magnets, an ornament and some applesauce pouches. He's not into candy.

  • My husband loves doing stockings. We get gum, dental floss, I get hair ties and clips. Sometimes there are ear phones maybe a small gift card to Starbucks or iTunes and peppermints. Always listerine breath strips, usually some kind of chocolate. We never really know for sure but they are a blast to open.

It's all just really small things that can be purchased at the checkout counter at stores, like CVS, Walgreens or the grocery store. My husband is very unorganized, never thinks ahead and always last minute. He wraps every single thing and is usually working on this up until minutes before we open gifts.

I think every year our favorite thing is to see what he picked up.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • My family is huge on stockings. In fact we usually end up with so much stuff in the stockings that we have done "stocking baskets" for the past few years because it doesn't all fit in the stocking.

Usually we each end up with an ornament, edible items (fancy chocolate bars, coffee, mini liquor bottles, etc) and then just random fun things like books, nail polish/make up, fancy soap, and there's usually a dog/cat toy thrown in there too. Last year I got everyone a bottle of PooPurri for their stocking (that stuff is amazing) and this year I found tooth wipes that remove the red wine stains from teeth without altering flavor.
I want these tooth wipes, where did you get them? My friends pick on me because I drink red wine and it always shows on my teeth.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • THANK YOU EVERYONE!

I really like the orange tradition, the stocking being from Santa, and putting them in the bedroom.

I think I got some great ideas like straws, crayons, and maybe a toy tractor or ornament.
  • Like a lot of folks we alway have the oranges. My mom always put walnuts (in the shell) and other nuts in there to along with candy and some trinkets.
I love doing the stockings, part of the challenge for me is finding things small enough to fit in the stocking.
(We've always done a small stocking for each of our cats too, and it is so much fun to watch them get to the toys inside!)
  • I've been putting those puzzle bags in my boys stockings each year, along with a few pieces of chocolate, a small toy (like a ninja turtle) and scotch tape. My kids beg for tape all the time to play with, so they will have that in their stocking.

I also hit the target bins for the coloring packs, pencils and notepads for my 6yo and coloring books/crayons for my 3yo.

  • For DS, we do some sort of treat - teddy grahams or vanilla wafers. I try to stay away from candy. Some of his favorite toys are cheap things that he has gotten from gift bags or fast food toys. I picked up some things from the party favor aisle to put in his stocking this year. It's amazing when they find the $1 toy fascinating and ignore the $20 toy.
