Baby Names

Eamon

I liked William, James, Samuel, etc. My H liked Beckett, Sawyer, Hudson, etc. I thought we would never agree on a name - but I think we have tentatively decided on Eamon. (We will pronounce it Ay-mon.) We like that it's secular, uncommon but accessible, time-honored - and I admit I like the possibility of Ames as an affectionate nickname.

Of course, I want to know what the internet thinks. Is this name too.. weird? Too hard to spell/pronounce? Any impressions or snap judgments come to mind?

And - any middle name suggestions? (Fake but similar last name)

Eamon James Ramsey
Eamon Cole
Eamon Rhys
Eamon..... ????

  • Love Eamon. I've only known one which is a plus as so many names have gotten too popular. I like all 3 mn options but Eamon Cole is most my style.
  • Hi from March 15! I love Eamon James as well. We have a neighbor named Eamon, but he is the only one I've ever met. I think it's a great name.

  • Eamon James!
  • Love Eamon Rhys!
  • My only association is the early 2000's singer Eamon who had the song "I don't want you back".

Before seeing this post I always thought it was pronounced Ee-mahn. I swear I have heard it pronounced that way because I never saw it written before and thought the singer was E-mon or something like that.

I don't hate the name, just not my style that's all. I like Eamon James.

From what I've read, it can be pronounced either way. Ay-mon is the Gaelic pronunciation & EE-mon is Old English, apparently? I know we'd be setting this kid up for a lot of "Em...E-ay....-- how do you say your name?" and "Huh?" type of reactions. I've already prepared an explanation -- "It's like Damon, without the D." But yeah -- it's not totally my style either, but it's a name both DH & I like enough to seriously consider. I didn't expect everyone to be so positive about it! I admit I go between liking it a ton, and not being sure I can get on board with it. It sounds...kind of...Southern to me?

Mostly I'm surprised that we're seriously considering such an unusual name. I'm imagining yelling it out the back door at dinner time, etc. I keep feeling weird, like I need to get used to it -- not like it's the wrong name, I think.

To those who like Eamon James -- do you think it'd be weird if his NN rhymes with his MN? Ames/James? I don't *plan* on calling him Ames regularly, but sometimes NN's just stick.

Eamon James and Eamon Rhys are both amazing!

This! I love Eamon (I prefer Eamonn, but still)!

Fair! I expected to hear that on this board. ;) Eamonn is traditional spelling. But Eamon seems to be widely accepted & Eamonn feels like it's loaded with extra letters! To me, at least. The spelling - either way - is the thing I hate the most about the name TBH. But I think I just need to get used to it.

FWIW, DH has an unusual, and very Gaelic, name. While we love it, it took a while for us to get used to it. Especially since we have people constantly asking how her name is pronounced. But we've gotten nothing but positive associations with it.

FTR, I don't think Southern at all when I see Eamon. Maybe if a Southerner said it...
  • I think it's nice. It isn't my particular style but it has a certain appeal to it. I would have pronounced it differently though (like EE-mon), but that is because this is the first I have seen it. I like it much better with the pronunciation that you are using.
  • I can't jump on the bandwagon. It sounds like amen to me, which is odd.
  • Thanks everyone! We have decided to go with Eamon James. (99% sure at least!)

It makes me think of Maester Aemon from Game of Thrones. I could also be pronouncing Eamon completely wrong in my head!!

ETA: Not that reminding me of Game of Thrones is a bad thing. Just wanted to throw it out there since I thought of it.
Haha - we don't even watch that! Is it pronounced the same?
  • I'm not a big Eamon fan, especially because it is tough to guess pronunciation. Similar names you might like: Amos, Ethan, Aaron, Ian, Asher
  • I like all your options for middle names (sorry, I'm no help).

I knew an Eamon in college- he is the only Eamon I've met, easy to pronounce, easy to spell.  Great name!
If being a math nerd is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
