4 doses of insulin daily plus 6 blood sugar checks a day.

I must admit, I'm worried about submitting my log today to my doc. I just know she's going to adjust my insulin dosage or something. It's so hard to stay on that schedule of constant checking and injecting, hopefully moving down to half days will help with that.

Rave: I discovered that the chick fil a salad, Chipotle bowls and sonic bacon cheeseburger combos (if I don't finish the tots and get an ocean water) all don't heighten my levels! Woo hoo!

QOTD: I love spending the cold nights cuddled up with DH after putting DD to bed and watching a movie, drinking hot cocoa and eating a cookie. This year I'll need a substitute for those snacks though... Sigh.

Will find out at my first appt on mon
Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves?
Have my first appt on mon.  They said it will be a 2 hr appt.  Luckily the specialist is on the floor above my OB's office so I may be able to schedule them together instead of driving back and forth.  Had a long conversation with them yesterday and my case may be tricky due to my digestive issues. Gastro put me on an additional med that may help with the vomiting in my sleep and hopefully speed things along.  Somehow caught a cold this weekend and now I feel like total shit. Hopefully it will go away soon cause my head feels like a bowling ball.
QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December?
I love all the time off.  I'm looking forward to sleeping all day long for like 2 weeks straight!

  • @peaceofkia it gets frustrating because I work 6am-3pm and have no PTO left.  I'm sure you're like me and getting tired of all the appts. I feel like I live in a docs office.  I'm getting so used to giving my first name, last name, and DOB.  I feel like I'm telling it to everyone now!

  • How far along are you? 29 weeks and 2 days. Grow, baby grow!

GD treatment /regimen? 4 checks per day. Before breakfast and after each meal.

Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves? I had an appt last week, was told I did well, on target for 93% of the time. I see the dietician every 2 weeks. My sugar level didn't blow up on thanksgiving day! I even had a small piece of apple pie for dessert. @PeaceofKia‌ I'm too afraid to try fast food, but I'm totally down for a juice burger.

QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December?
Cold in the house in the morning, causes DH to linger in bed longer. I get to snuggle up in our little concoon every morning. I am in love.

Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves? My blood sugar was low the past two mornings--61 and 58, but was back to normal this morning (actually a little high).  I'm going to bring it up at my regular appointment tomorrow.

QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December?  Seeing family.  Seeing everyone's decorations.

Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves? I'm really sick of this doctor I have. I try not to call in with symptoms I have just incase they stop and she just has me to the point I don't want to call at all whether they stop or not.
I also found I can have a chipotle bowl and it not make my sugar crazy.
QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December? I'm not much of a December person. Growing up my dad left two weeks before christmas. Then one year all our christmas ornaments where stolen by my stepfathers sister. So christmas isn't my thing.

I got the same issue. All my morning readings are below 70. My dietitian told me I needed to eat more at dinner. Last night my dinner reading was 2 above the limit but I still clocked in at 60. Go figure. Do you eat breakfast right away when you see a low reading or eat 15g of carbs and retest after 15mins before you take on a meal?

Those two mornings I just ate a higher carb than normal breakfast and tested after 2 hours.  I'll check with my doctor when I see her tomorrow to see if she wants me to do anything differently.  Both of those days my blood sugar was a bit lower than normal (but not too low) after all of my meals so in general I ate more carbs.  We'll see what happens.

Do you eat a nighttime snack?  If so, rather than eating more at dinner, maybe just have a higher carb snack?
  • I don't snack at night. I eat dinner around 7pm, and I get up some time between 6-7am. Need to have my fasting hours in, so it's a bit awkward to snack when I don't have the desire to. My dinner time readings are just within the limits, which seems to indicate I'm eating the right amount of food. I have low blood sugar and blood pressure in the morning pre pregnancy, it feels like more of a continuation of the same theme.

Damn you eat dinner at 7? I can't make it past 5 without eating dinner even non pregnant. But DD's bedtime is 7 since she has to get up at 5 for us to go to work.

Here lately I've been having some wicked cravings for ritz crackers. Like really bad.

I don't get up nearly as early as you do though! Your days are so much longer than mine, you'd have to eat all your meals earlier than me.

I'm still that annoying bitch who doesn't have any real cravings, but I do have a strange relationship with food. It's the hunger that gets me, when I'm hungry, I don't discriminate. Although, with this modified meal plan, I wish I could eat more fruits to provide higher quality nutitients for my baby.

Sounds like most of you have found ways to sneak some guilty pleasures in here and there. I have yet to find mine. I feel like I'm cheating when I take down a measured portion of berries and non fat Greek yogurt at snack time instead of during a meal - because I don't test for glucose at snacks, doesn't mean it didn't elevate...

    GD treatment /regimen?
Because it's my fasting numbers that are of concern, the dr went ahead and started me on insulin. I have to take it each night. It seems to be helping, though all my numbers have been a little higher than normal the past couple of days - I'm hoping because of the strep infection, and they will go back to normal soon.

Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves? I don't know who is actually supposed to be following me for the GD. The dr at the place I had my growth scan is the one that prescribed me the insulin and told me to check my sugar - but never gave me specific information about how often I should be checking it, and so far no one has asked to see my log to be able to keep an eye on the numbers.  I had my 30 week appointment with the MW yesterday and she never asked about my numbers - just started trying to convince me that bigger babies are easier.

I like the Christmas season. Or at least what the season is supposed to be. The family, giving, community, decorations, all that - not the crap the retailers have tried to turn it into.

They suppose to ask for your numbers and copy them each time you visit your OB. At least thats what they do with me.

@pikpiko I don't think your sugar would rise to much with greek yogurt and strawberries. Strawberries really don't have that much sugar and greek yogurt is a protein so what sugar the strawberries do have probably keeps it in check.

Also I've realized that regular pepperoni and turkey pepperoni have no carbs or sugar! Was extremely happy to realize that last night since I've been wanting pepperoni and cheese like crazy.

1000 mg of Metformin in the am.  1000 mg Metformin in the PM and Glyburide (I forget the dose).

I am with you ladies – I am having a hard time finding times to go into the doc.  Starting next week I have appointments every week until she is born.  Next week will be my 32 week appt ( a lil early), then we start with non-stress tests every week.  I guess the non-stress tests take a bit of time so I have to leave work extra early.  Thank goodness I have an awesome boss that tells me not to use my sick time or vacation time, but I feel bad.

I love December!  I love Christmas and the nostalgia that it brings.  This time next year is going to be amazing with lil ones around!

  • Checking in today, as I wasn't around a lot yesterday!

    How far along are you?
    30 weeks tomorrow.

    GD treatment /regimen?
Right now, just diet/exercise and testing 4x a day (fasting, and an hour after meals).

Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves?
I see both the dietician and the OB who'll do my growth scan for the first time tomorrow, so I'm hoping to have more info then. I did see my regular OB this past Monday and we chatted about it a bit. One thing she said is that, since the insulin-blocking is coming from the placenta, and the placenta changes/grows a LOT in the third trimester, that my levels may change week-to-week. She said that she's had GD patients before who get very frustrated b/c they do stuff to control their blood sugar levels, then their strategy just stops working. So she was just warning me (and, I guess, all of us!) that it's totally normal for that to happen, and to try not to get frustrated, but just be open and flexible to trying something else if what I'm doing is no longer working.

So far, my levels are pretty normal with some slight diet changes and lots more exercise, but I'm definitely taking her warning under advisement if that changes going forward!

QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December?
A tie between holiday lights and the songs. Oh, and I really really love shopping for gifts for people. :)

I will have my next appointment in two weeks. I did not really like how my OB handled the "education" I was given about the condition. They told me I have GD, put me in a room by myself to watch a 20 minute video that I'm pretty sure was made in the 90's, and then sent me on my way with a packet of information and a script for my supplies. I kept trying to ask the nurse questions since I had done some reading about GD before my appointment and she just kept saying, "Well there's a lot of information in the packet we gave you. If you have any other questions, your next appointment is in two weeks."  Umm, huh? Shouldn't someone here be able to answer my questions? But I've become less and less impressed with my OB as the pregnancy has gone on. (Whew, sorry that ended up so long)
QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December?
I just love the cold!! I have never been a huge fan of Christmas, mostly because of anxiety issues as a kid. Now that I have DS (3.5), I love seeing his joy at Christmas but other than that I could do without it.

  • @Ellteejay‌ that's how I felt about it. Someone should have at least written down my concerns and called me later with answers if the RN I talked to didn't know the answer. I asked about how the baby's size would be monitored and what type of additional monitoring, if any, we should expect as we get closer to our due date and she couldn't even tell me that. I felt like that is something that should have been covered automatically without me having to ask.

  • So I'm wondering if I should be happy about this.

So at my appointment today with the neuro they weighed me. I weigh the exact same thing I did last month at my OB appointment. (Not going to mention the actual number).

So once I started the GD diet I lost a few pounds and have kept them off and not gained anymore weight. Thats good for a GD baby right? Thats a sign I'm keeping my sugar under control is what i took from that. Anyone else have opinions?

@psychobutthead - I had some of the same thoughts regarding weights and debated whether to comment since it's a sensitive topic. I too lost everything I gained over last month during the first week of the new diet. However, I'm a petite person, my dietitian told me while she expects some weight loss initially while getting adjusted to the new diet, she wants to see weight gain the next time we meet. She and my OB both said more or less the same thing. The initial weight loss they don't think is a big deal and they assured me it's coming from me, not the baby. Just don't make a habit of it.

I'm a bit stressed over having to gain weight. But today I didn't lose anymore and it looks like I might have packed on half a pound since last week. That's a bit more reassuring.

I've been wanting to ask, do you ladies feel very thirsty all the time? I was thirty a lot initially, but now I seem to need water every 10 mins. I wake up several times at night to pee and drink more. Now I keep 2 nalgene bottles by my bed. So many bathroom trips...

    Edit:man, words are hard

  • I only get occasional thirst, probably because I drink so much water, especially during days I work.  Since I work at a school i pass a water fountain often and fill up my cup!!

Weight is a sensitive issue for some ladies. Which I understand. Thats why i didn't mentioned specific amounts. What one person may think is too big for them is another person's normal and I don't want anyone to become upset or think something is wrong with their particular weight.

But with the GD situation I was looking for opinions because my OB never mentioned my weight or possibly loosing weight at the start of the GD eating.

Also I feel extremely thirsty all the time. The only time I don't is when I'm at work i can refill my cup constantly since I work at a school and theres an ice machine and water fountains everywhere. Honestly at home I don't drink as much water as I prob should.

My OB was telling me monday that 8 glasses or 8 bottles a day is to much and that we should really have 5. But with all the other wacked out shit she told me monday I don't know if I should believe that because she was trying to claim I drink too much water.

EDIT: I'm really loving this thread every week and the fact that it allows me to not clog up the spam thread with GD related concerns and questions.

  • No worries about the weight thing. I too felt was a legitimate question but was too chicken to ask. Next time you see your dietitian, you should bring it up so you know how to adjust your diet. I added more protein to my snacks in response to my OB and dietitian's comments about needing to see weight gain.

5 glasses, that's puny. I prob down that within 2 hours. I carry a 1 liter nalgene bottle everywhere. My OB said at least 3 of those a day would help to keep the cramps away and reduce swelling in my legs later in the 3rd trimester. She is a strong believer in drinking more water, so is my dietitian. I was told that with a fiber rich diet, we would need the water to help digestion. I find that if I drink only 3L of water, my urine could get a lot more yellow, which is a sign I was slightly dehydrated. The way I look at it is, there isn't anything harmful with drinking more water if you feel thirsty (of course if you feel sick from drinking it, you should stop), but there is a lot of harm in not drinking enough. Esp with our GD, it could muck up your glucose readings.

I failed my 3 hour by very little, I actually passed if the used the National Dibetic scale but ehhh whatever, not worth fighting with them.

I failed at 9 weeks as well (barely) so I had been following a specific eating plan since then. I have a feeling the only concern I'll have initially is my morning fasting numbers. I still get morning sickness so I tend to eat something small/drink milk ect in the middle of the night around 2 or 3 so when I test for a "fasting number" I'm usually around 100-110. Idk, my fasting in August was always in the 80-90s but I didn't have this problem. If I don't eat I almost always throw up the min I wake up at 6, it's horrible. I'll see what the dietician says about it.
  • Honestly, as long as you aren't gaining tons of weight, and by tons I mean 10+lbs a week, I wouldn't worry about loss or gain. Eatting better and all that can cause you to loose weight. Different scales also can weigh differently, not to mention time of day, or even clothes you are wearing.  Our bodies are going through so many changes - including changes in metabolism.  try not to stress about weight!

  • You have to change your evening snack to something with more protein
  • How far along are you? 29 weeks GD treatment /regimen? Test four times daily, structured 1800 calorie diet, and weekly check in with dietician. Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves? My first appointment with endo doc is in morning. Kinda of nervous. I really want to enjoy my pregnancy this makes it a little harder. Guess I just gotta earn those Mothers's Day gifts for the rest of my life lol QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December? I love baking, being cozy, and decorating. Now idk about all the holiday food and sweet treats. Bummer
  • Hi,

I am also joining the group. I'm 28 weeks today. Just found out yesterday that I failed the 3-hour test with pretty high numbers and will meet with the diabetes nurse on Monday. I went through some denial, guilt, some anger and frustration, but have settled on sad and weepy. After a really sick first trimester (that spilled well-into the second), I finally felt like I had my life back. And now all I see is an uncomfortable three months ahead and worst-case scenarios at the end. All of my friends have had "perfect" pregnancies and seem subscribe to the idea that their good luck is the result of their actions and decisions. Even though I know better, I've felt really alienated and quite alone. I'm looking forward to having this space for support. Thanks.

  • Sorry a little delayed this week. Getting ready to sell house as my DH just got transferred for work

How far along are you? 30 weeks

GD treatment /regimen? Test 4x a day and diet

Any appts, updates, Rants or Raves? Fasting numbers have been really high the last two mornings. Going to call my Dr and see what they want me to do as they have been getting higher.
QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December? Having all the Christmas decorations out. And the snow on the trees. After December I could be done with the snow.

I worry about my weight as well. At my last appointment they were a little concern about my weight going up. But also said that as long as the baby is growing well that it is not a huge concern and they would just keep monitoring.

It's great to have this support on here

  • @nyclo. Sorry you were going through all those emotions. I had some of those thoughts and feelings too when I first found out. The good thing is, it actually does get a bit better once you get the hang of it. I've had a rough start finding the right balance but now I'm about 3 weeks since finding out, I'm definitely learning so much more about how my system works, and am a lot less stressed.

Don't feel like you're alone in this, there are plenty of us around going through the same thing. You too will get the hang of this. Stress does make your glucose level wonky too, so try to relax and find something to occupy your thoughts so you're not obsessing over it. Hang in there, mama.

I was upset this morning when I got my results, and was out at lunch time so I was stressed about what I should eat.  At home it isn't a problem, because I have mostly adjusted my diet already anyway.  I decided to go with a veggie sub on wheat at Subway and my numbers were awesome!
QOTD : What's your favorite thing about December?
I love giving gifts to people, and watching my son experience the joys of the season.  He just learned to answer " HO HO HO " when I ask him what Santa says.

  • 30+1 testing for times a day not really discouraged but not really thrilled! Everyone of my readings besides thanksgiving has been normal, I continue to have to poke and prod myself 4 times a day. Since numbers have been so good I started eating some of the same foods I was before watching my sugars and no change still usually well under 120. My favorite thing about December Christmas cookies! ;(
  • Did you buy your own glucometer or was it provided for you? Also, what kind do you like?
  • @teitani‌ it was provided. I use the one touch ultra 2 meter. Not bad for meters I suppose.
