20 weeks ... and a spot of blood :(

Hi there, this is my first pregnancy, and I'm 20 weeks today. I just went to the bathroom and wiped ... and there was a small spot of blood (smaller than an eraser tip) on the tissue paper. I'm stressing out. :( Is this normal? Do I need to call my doctor?

Re: 20 weeks ... and a spot of blood :(

  • If it's only the one spot or even a couple small ones, you probably don't need to worry. If there's more, you might want to call your doctor especially if it's a lot more as they can help you figure out what to do next. As of right now, I would try not to worry unless something changes.

Could it have possibly come from the "rear"? If you were straining or had a rather hard poo, that could be a cause of blood on the paper.

ETA: otherwise, I'm with sharkfarts. My doctor wants to know about any blood, especially if accompanied by any other symptoms (pain, etc.)
  • Thoughts to you and try not to stress yourself out too much. Call your doctor as soon as you can even just for some peace of mind. I'm sure it's nothing but we can't replace your doctor unfortunately.

  • I wouldn't call unless it got heavier. I've had bleeding during all my pregnancies. I only call/go in if the bleeding is heavy and/or accompanied with pain.
  • I would call just to be on the safe side.
  • I just called .. and the advice nurse said that unless it's a lot of blood, then try not to worry. She said spotting can be unsettling, but normal. I've been wiping and wiping and even checking my cervix lightly ... and there hasn't been a speck of blood. I don't get it ... where did the blood come from?! I check my backside too ... and nothing. Of course, I'm having a hard time not being scared. Maybe I should just go to sleep. :( Anyway, thank you all so much for your advice. This was my first post on The Bump. :)
  • Have your doc check for a bladder infection. I had same issue with not other symptoms just once after restroom turns out I had it and it cases irritation to cervix! Good luck try not to worry if not heavy and no cramping
  • Perhaps the wiping and wiping is causing the irritation. Sometimes in our hope to be thorough we end up being a little too aggressive with our girl bits.

I use this little poem to figure out what to do about blood when wiping:

From the rear--you're in the clear.
From the vag--call your doctor instead of asking a bunch of online strangers.

  • Its most likely nothing, but the dr. told me to call anytime i see blood.

  • I would stop with the self cervical checks, too...could lead to irritation and more spotting.
