Cloth Diapering

Traveling Advice

Hello - I have been cloth diapering my daughter since she was born, and she is now 17 months.

In December, we will be traveling by plane and gone for 10 days. I am debating as to whether I want to take our cloth with us or buy disposable once we arrive at our destination. I'm seeking input from those with experience - pros/cons to cloth versus disposable on a long trip? Maybe it would be best to do both (disposables on plan or during the day / cloth at night?).

My pros for cloth are - no worries of ill-fit/leaks/rashes from different products, etc
My pros for disposables - less luggage & laundry

Thanks in advance for any input. :)

Re: Traveling Advice

  • The big question is whether or not you will have easy access to laundry facilities at your destination. If so, then I'd take cloth personally. If you will not, then disposables are the way to go.

We are flying to FL next week for 12 days and taking cloth. We're staying with my in-laws so have easy access to laundry. We just flew last week and using cloth was no problem even no the plane. And I didn't have to worry about leaks/blowouts etc. I had a few sposies in our diaper bag as backups in case we went through more diapers than I thought, but never had to use them.

  • Thanks for the input.

We are headed to Hawaii. We will have easy access to a washer for our first 6 nights, not so easy, but doable for the last 3 - switching hotels/islands.

We have flown several times and traveled a lot in cloth - and I would prefer to keep her in cloth.

My major hold up is that we have 4 adults going, and waited too long to secure a rental car, so we are all squeezing into a large sedan instead of a minivan from the airport to the hotel on the first island. I'm worried about space. Lesson learned to reserve a car more than 2 months in advance.

Any tips for packing to take up less space? I know prefolds would probably be ideal, but we have mostly AIOs. Would you just take enough for 2 days and do laundry e/o day?
  • When we have flown with the babies we pack enough disposable diapers for the day in a carry on.  Then we buy what we will need for the rest of the time when we get to our destination.  Since we are hauling a lot more stuff by having the babies with us and it costs to check bags these days, I just opt for disposables.  Besides, if we are flying somewhere chances are I don't want to deal w/ cloth.
  • Any issues with your child's skin being irritated by disposables? That's my biggest worry about leaving my cloth at home.
  • In that case I'd go with disposables. I would not want to wash cloth on a hawaii vacation in a hotel.

If you do decide to go with cloth, can you just order a few packs of flats that you can pad fold in a cover?  Those would be super easy to wash up and fast to dry. And they take up less space and you won't be as devastated if your luggage is lost with all your AIO's.

  • I wanted to ask this question when we travel the week after Christmas but it's good to have the answer now. @Brandiewine11‌, I'm SO glad you said something about not wanting to lose the fluff if our luggage was lost. That hadn't even crossed my mind and definitely makes me say disposable inserts and thirsties shells only for our trip. I wanted to show off the fluff but not risking the loss of my new to me AIO and pockets!
  • I agree with PPs, I would go with disposables. I really wouldn't want the added stress of how/where/when to wash when you're on vacation. We are going away for 4 days at the end of the month, and I'm already pretty bummed about putting M in disposables. But I also don't want to schlep all our diaps in our luggage (God forbid the airlines lost our bags or something)...

Try to think of it as a vacation from washing/stuffing diapers... that's kind of nice, right?

  • Thanks ladies. I think I am going to pack disposables and maybe 10 cloth (thinking I will take some pockets we can also use as swim diapers). This way, I will have cloth if she has some reaction to the disposables. I think disposables will be much more expensive over there and I can use the space they take up for souvenirs purchased while we are there. I do think the laundry there would be a big commitment.
