Re: SAHM Extra Income??

  • I'm not a SHAM, but I contract so I'm off at different times during the year while I'm between contracts.  I have several SHAM friends who are in direct sales.  How much they earn varies, but at least one of my friends is making a nice extra every month (I'm guessing that she's earning $2kish/month).  She got into it b/c she found a product line that she really loved and has managed to grow her team and has been promoted several times.  I've tossed around getting into one- mostly b/c it is something that I use and selling it would support my desire to be able to buy more.

  • I have a friend who sells Mary Kay and teaches cyber school. Her baby's not due until November but she'll be all set after he's born. I would love to be a SAHM and still earn an income but I can't figure out what to get into. I'll keep an eye on this thread though, hopefully I can get some ideas.

  • I watch our cousin's little girl during the week. She is only a few months younger than my son so they have a great time together. I'm debating whether I want to continue watching her after baby arrives. It might be nice for my son to have a playmate while I'm busy with baby but then again, that ties me down and we won't be able to go anywhere or do anything during the week. Still undecided. The extra spending money is nice though... it pays my student loans and more every month.
  • I know of people who sell on Ebay and Etsy. What you make is really determined on how much effort and time you put in it.

Also, some people who have a teaching degree can tutor students on the side or teach online classes. Musicians can give lessons etc.

I have done a few things here and there (cake decorating, ebay) but have never really committed myself to it. My husband says he doesn't care if I bring in extra income, it is just as important to manage well what we do have. For example: I grocery shop and doing my best to make that money stretch can end up saving us money and almost be like bringing in a small income.
  • I have a few friends that do the direct sales and make a great extra income, but it doesn't come without a lot of extra work.  I had one that actually stepped away from her direct sales job because it was cutting into her family time (she was selling Pure Romance, and it was turning into every weekend and a couple nights a week) - she was, however, making about $35-40,000/year.

I agree with pp... The people I know who make a lot with direct sales are still really busy at night and on weekends, so you have to be willing to give that up. I know one who does really well with initials inc and another with pampered chef.

  • Wish I had the personality for direct sales. I'm such an introvert, bordering socially awkward, that I don't think I'd have what it takes to network and make the connections to throw the parties, etc. Wish I could find something to do from home though. I'm a SAHM and things are really tight. I try to sell a bit on eBay but it takes a lot of time and work to make any real money that way...

  • I tried my hand at selling eBay. Too much work for too little profit. I became a personal trainer and worked at gyms then built my own biz but it took time. A year ago I got into direct sales with Rodan and Fields bc they were new and growing so fast. I felt I had to try it out. I am pretty quiet but there aren't parties so I thought I could handle it. Initially I put in more time (10-15 hrs/week) to get customers established and now I put in barely anything bc I'm tired! I bring in anywhere from. 500-1400/month depending on how many orders are being refilled or how active my team is ( I only have a few selling with me). I plan to pick it up a lot more after baby because the income potential is huge. As PP's said, huge income isn't without work, though. Hope that helps!

  • I provide childcare at two churches during women's bible studies and Mops meetings.

It isn't a lot, but it helps.  Gives me a reason to get out of the house and I think it has been good for my kids to be around other adults and other kids.
  • I take surveys.  I try to devote at least an hour a day to it (sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't for days) and when I hit a certain amount, I cash in to a paypal account.  While I don't make much, maybe $20/month, that's roughly $250 for Christmas we don't have to come up with.  Plus, being in a paypal account, it's out of sight, out of mind.

  • If you're at all into health and fitness you may want to consider Beachbody. It's a great product line and you're part of a team. I have friends who make over 3k per month while at home with their kids. Message me if you want more info and I can point you in the right direction.

  • I think the best thing you could do would be watching a few kids at your home once you are settled. Anything else like sales requires you to take time away from your baby and might actually be impossible if you don't have someone to watch baby while you are working. Being a mom is a full time job

  • I already do direct sales part-time, but once I start maternity leave I plan on expanding it to full-time. The company I'm with is really great, and as a part-time business I'm making $500 a month. That is with doing just 1 party a month- if I actually did as many as they recommend, it would be closer to $2,000.

  • I sell Jamberry. I make 0-500 depending on how much I put into it.
  • I work part time in the evenings.  I've tried other things, but they weren't the best fit for my family.

  • @MsMacual and @staryb - I just sent you both messages!
  • @mrswelsh3- check out the blog wahm adventures.  She tends to review a lot of pt work from home jobs and she has a job board that usually includes a few really flexible jobs.  There are a few other sites that are specifically for remote jobs, but they mostly list ft positions, which would be hard to do with a baby to take care of.

  • Like an above pp suggested - I'm a prof singer with a music biz and songwriting degree so I coach privately and hold master classes. I also tutor h.s./college one evening a week as I'm pursuing a teaching cert. and M.Ed anyway.

A friend of mine crochets? cute little animals and sells them on etsy.
  • I'd love to have the extra room for a loom and weave baby wraps. High quality ones go for upwards of 1K and I think it would be a satisfying creative outlet. Obviously it would take time to learn and master, as with anything, there's no such thing as easy money.

You may want to sign up for reseach study groups if there are any in your area. They keep you in their system and contact you if you meet the needs of a specific focus group. They would pay anywhere from $80 to sometimes over $200 for a couple hours of your time and input. I've been asked to participate in everything from fruit juice to household appliance groups.

  • I am an oboe player and play around town here and there. I used to teach private lessons but decided to stop when DD1 was born. I wanted that extra family time. I am also in the direct sales business but only put enough effort into it to make a little something extra. I have an etsy shop as well and I love making and selling things on there.

If I decided to focus on one thing entirely then I know I could make a lot more money. However, that's not what I care to do. I would rather do a little something here and there and spend more time with my family.

  • I use to watch another girl just for a few hours a week, it was nice to have a little extra cash each week. I also pick up seasonal contract work from my old job that I can do from home.

  • I sell Jamberry. I make 0-500 depending on how much I put into it.

I just signed up under my best friend selling Jamberry!
She actually just received a $800 bonus on top of her sales commission for the month which was about $450. So she made $1250 this past August alone.
  • im not a SAHM as of yet. before i got preggo i had my own clothing/jewelry/homemade hair accessory lines that i worked while i had a 9-5 and two little ones. Granted for the past 9 months I have stop them mainly due to lack of energy from LO but as of this Friday its my last day at my 9-5 and im looking forward to being home with my two kids and having LO within the next week or so. I have also just taken little steps in re-opening my online stores, ordering a little bit of supplies at a time to jump start back into my crafty self while i sit at home with a new little one.

    -/--

It seriously is a company you can make a ton at because everyone does their nails a LOT. it isn't like scentsy where you can go month and months without ordering as a customer. You get addicted to all the designs! Shoot even as a rep my stash is huge
  • Jam berry is a nail design company? Never heard of it and assumed it as literally selling assorted jams, lol. I have to get out more.

  • I'll jump in even though I'm not a SAHM since I do direct sales part-time with Arbonne. I've seen a combination of so many different ways to make it in direct sales. The most successful people tend to build teams to help them. For example, there's a woman in my upline who has 4 NVPs (top of the company) she directly sponsored. She doesn't just sit at home doing nothing, but having that huge of a team helps leverage your time.

Even having 3 or 4 in your downline helps. It's not that you get kickbacks from their sales, it's that their sales help you promote to the next level and increase your earnings on your own sales. So by yourself you're doing $3000 in sales a month, but so are they, so your team (including you) is doing, say $10k. It adds up. So instead of making $1250 (commission and bonuses) a month, you're making an override from your whole team volume...so $1770 a month or around $21k a year. Add in another $10k/month and it goes up to $2090/month or $25k/year. Obviously these are based on Arbonne. Every company is different with commissions and stuff, but the bottom line is however you make your sales, it doesn't have to all be you. $3000 in sales is say, 6 nights a month you're not home. $10k is 20 nights, etc. Direct sales is all about working smarter. That's the beauty of it. You don't have to spend any more time away from your family than you have to.

I remember thinking that business model looked scary at one point, but then I realized it's not much different than a lot of other companies on the income side of things. The CEO of a company isn't making the same amount as a supervisor and that supervisor makes more than the 10 people he supervises. If it's a company that bases everything off commissions, well...

I'll reel myself back in. I've seen what network marketing has done for so many people. The best advice I could give anyone who reads this is to find something that YOU are passionate about. Don't join a company because it's new or because you think it will sell well because that's not the point. If you don't like what a company sells, what's going to convince anyone to buy it from you? Do your research, ask questions, and be aware that not all reviews are created equal.

  • I own a marketing firm and moved my office from downtown to the new house a few months ago.

There are pros and cons to working from home - especially if you have staff.

Nearly all of the contractors that I hire for occasional writing assignments are women. I pay well for those services and there are a few other PR and marketing firms who they work with on occasion for comparable pay. I've never asked but I'd guess that the con is that they receive very short-term assignments for the most part, so there's no steady income stream.

My graphic designers are guys - two on staff - and two who freelance. All work from home/Starbucks. Much more steady work/pay. If you can carve out a strong niche and feel comfortable promoting yourself consistently, you can earn a lot of money comfortably.
