Braxton Hicks out of control?

I'm a FTM at 27 weeks, and I've rea plenty about Braxton hicks, but everything I see says they're mildly uncomfortable but not painful. I've been having them off and on the past two days, they go on for about 4 hours with a 2 hour break and they come every five minutes like clockwork. Moving, standing, water, nothing makes them stop, and they double me over in pain. I can't see my doctor until tomorrow at 10 because I live in a rural area. Could I be in early labor?

  • For real ..go to an Er.....

  • Let me make sure I'm understanding this right- for the past 2 days for the entire day you've had time-able contractions where for 4 hours you will have one every 5 minutes, then they go away for 2, then come back for 4 more hours?  Sorry I just wanted to make sure I'm reading that right.

I can get some BH going most evenings, especially after a busy day, and they go on most of the evening, but they aren't ever time-able.  I would call your doctor's emergency line or your insurance's nurse hotline.  I actually wouldn't suggest going to the ER unless the ER is in a hospital that has an active L&D wing (I'm very rural, too, and know mine doesn't) as ER staff typically isn't tell trained in deciphering a real contraction from a BH and may not treat you correctly.

For the love of god call your doctor. If your OB refuses to make an emergency appointment for this, then they are useless and you probably needed to know that in advance of birth anyway.

  • That doesn't sound normal to me, and I would definitely talk to your dr asap. Hope everything is okay for you!
  • As someone who went into preterm labor the first time at 23 weeks with my oldest, go in or call your doctor. They aren't comfortable, but I've never doubled over in pain from one. If I were to double over in pain anytime, I wouldn't have hesitated to call anyway. Not to sound rude, but it's really common sense. If you wait, you could end up seriously regretting it if something were to happen. Better safe than sorry. Oh and for the record, I'm rural area too, yet I wouldn't use it as a reason not to try and see the doctor sooner. As Pele said, if your doctor refuses to see you, or blows it off, get a new one.

  • If you are having more than 6 comtractions in an hour please call your doctor and/or go to labor and delivery. You need to be assessed for preterm labor. Preterm contractions aren't always super painful.
