Re: your OB's induction policy

Would you think that's something negotiable or pretty set in stone.  I'm going to ask him tomorrow but if he says 41 weeks, I might ask if he'll let me go to closer to 42 weeks in order to avoid an induction.  Would this be something you talked about now or waited until the time came?  I don't want to get all pushy over something that might not even need to be discussed.

Re: Re: your OB's induction policy

  • Mine is super flexible, but he rarely pushes induction anyway. I asked him last week, and he said we'd see how my blood sugars were doing, how I was feeling, etc.

  • my OBs typically induce at 41 weeks, but will let their patients negotiate with them if you're having an easy pregnancy.  i'm not even sure if i'd want to be 41 weeks pregnant.  barf!

  • If your OB is reasonable then I would think this would be something worth negotiating. As long as you are healthy and the baby is healthy he shouldn't have a problem with it. I would bring it up sooner, than later with him.

I talked about it with my MW when I had DS and they didn't have a problem with it as long as he and I were not in any danger.

  • The first time I was pregnant we never discussed it, I went a little past my due date. I'm hoping we don't discuss it again until i'm at least 42 weeks. I don't want to be induced.
  • My dr doesn't induce until 10 days (give or take) overdue. If I do go that long, I think I'm going to ask if I can wait until a full 2 weeks overdue, it would only be another 4 days. I just really don't want to be induced. I really don't want to have a c section if at all possible. I don't think that I'll have an extremely large baby either. My mom was 6 days overdue w/ me and I was 6lb 8oz, and she was a week overdue with my brother and he was 7lb 1oz.

  • I had to fight "The Hospital's" induction policy.  The MW was willing but "THE HOSPITAL" wouldn't allow deliveries after 42 weeks.

It's a bunch of bullshit.  If I showed up in labor at 42w 1 day were they really going to throw me out on the street? No.

You CAN do what you want.  But then the medical risk/health factors are all on  you and not the doctor or MW.

  • My midwife doesn't even check your cervix to see if you've dilated until your 41 weeks.  No induction unless its necessary or after 42 weeks.
  • Mine goes until 42 weeks.

I would wait until the time came. No sense in having a convo that may not be necessary. Plus, you may want to wait until 42 weeks and the time comes and it is necessary to go earlier anyways for medical purposes, you never know what will happen.

  • I talked about it to my OB on my first visit at 8 weeks.  I did NOT want to be induced unless there was a medical reason for it.  Unfortunately that is why I am being induced.  I don't think his ways are too set in stone, but I know he doesn't feel comfortable going a week overdue.  With me he said he would only go 4 days.  I would just casually talk about it to your OB and see what you find out.
  • My OB prefers to do it 7-10 days after, which leaves a little room for negotiation. However, if I wanted her to do it it would be 7 days after because I know she's on call that day, so we'll see when we get there.
  • I'm limited by the policies of our health system, but I know that if you want to wait here even beyond the 42 weeks you can and they will just offer more frequent monitoring.

I know my step sister back in the US wanted a VBAC and refused the c/s at 38 weeks or whatever to wait a few extra days and see if she went into labour on her own, so I'm sure some doctors will be flexible as long as there's no serious risk to the baby or mum.

  • I asked becasue I didn't want to be worried about it. My doc says that we will plan to go until 42 weeks unless somthing comes out on a stress test that makes them need to go earlier.

Work it out with your doc. most will try to fit your wishes as long as baby is doing well.

  • We start talking about induction at 41 weeks, but they told me it's a discussion only.  They don't have a firm policy.
  • I'm pretty sure mine would negotiate, but we were just talking about the possibility of induction next week (since I have NO progress) and...I don't think I'd want to negotiate. I've had a pretty comfortable pregnancy overall, but I am so ready for her to be here. The thought of going past next Sunday...I just don't think I could stand it.
