Rh-negative

Hi,
I have a negative blood type and my DH is positive. Has anyone else with this combo received Rhogam during their first pregnancy? My doctor doesn't seemed concerned, but my mother is a hematologist and says I should get it now.

Re: Rh-negative

  • That's us! I get Rhogam at 28 weeks then after baby is born. I also already had a shot this time around since I had some bleeding early on. I figure it is a good safety measure. I received the shot with DD ( our first) because I wanted to protect future babies. From what I understand RH- usually isn't a big deal with the first baby but it can become an issue with future pregnancy. My theory is better safe than sorry. Oh and unless you are bleeding you won't need it until 28 weeks, so no need to get it now ( unless you are in car wreck or have some trama).

  • The ladies are right, no need to worry 28 weeks and after delivery. I had one around 7 weeks for a lot of bleeding as a precaution. :)
  • I got a shot when I miscarried a few years back. Doc said I'll be getting one at 28wks this time and then after delivery if the baby comes out positive (apparently they check the babes blood type and only give it again if the lo is positive). But I was told to call immediately if I have any bleeding cause then I'll get an extra shot just to be on the safe side
  • Awesome, thank you ladies! I won't worry about it for now, and then I'll be on the look out for it at 28 weeks.
  • Also, if it has not been said before, make sure to get a shot in the future if you have a miscarriage, even an early one; if you do not you can become iso-immunized.
  • Yes to what PPs said, and also want to add that you'll only need a second shot after delivery if your baby is also RH positive.  Both of mine were (thanks, DH!), but really even if you hate shots you're not really going to notice the post-delivery one.

  • Hi! I just had my first rhogam about a week ago because of spotting (16 weeks) and I wouldn't have normally received it until week 28. I had spotting at week 9 and they didn't give me a rhogam at that point...not sure why. I had a pretty harsh reaction to it with some abdominal cramping, but they said it was normal and very rare. The shot itself isn't bad. I would recommend speaking with another doctor, because when I changed OBs they gave me the shot and said I would have gotten it at week 9 if I had been with them. Good luck!
  • Me, the shot is given later I can't remember when.  When baby is born they will check their blood, if they are positive you will receive another shot.  I had to because my DD is positive.  If I have any bleeding I need to go in to get a shot otherwise I will get it again later on.
  • One of my children is Rh positive and I'm negative, but I don't remember getting a shot after delivery! I don't remember much though so it's possible I did get one. What's the reason that we get one after birth?
  • Your suppose to get it at 28 weeks and after delivery
  • In a standard pregnancy the protocol is to give the shot at 28 weeks and at birth.  At birth, hospital births are typed at birth for rh.  If the baby has rh positive blood you get a second shot, if the baby is not positive you do not get a shot.  The reasons a woman might get a shot earlier than 28 weeks are if she has had a previous pregnancy and did not get the shot then, if she is experiencing or has experienced bleeding during the pregnancy, if she has had a blood transfusion or organ donation.  The early blood work done in one of your early appointments looks for antibodies.  If your body has antibodies to rh positive blood as would happen in one of the situations mentioned above, your doctor would have mentioned it.  If you are not aware you have ever been pregnant odd are very low your body has encountered rh positive blood and it will not attack it.  The shot is to protect the next pregnancy as your body has to build up a defense.  It is usually the 2nd or 3rd rh positive child that the body attacks.
