Breastfeeding

Cluster feeding

Sooo--yesterday--we had to leave LO for 5 hours (she is 3 weeks old) so I left 6 oz with grandma and grandpa to feed her. Came back, BF her--she slept for 3 hours (until 10:30pm) then she was up all night long--wouldn't latch properly, etc. It was a struggle until about 8am this morning--she has been latching better but wants to nurse like every hour. Can babies cluster feed during the day? I thought most only did it at night?

Re: Cluster feeding

  • Yes they can cluster feed at any time if day. May be a growth spurt. May be seeking comfort after being away from you. :)

  • Ok--thanks ladies. I feel like she isn't getting anything. My boobs feel soooooo soft. I can't have anything left!
  • You never run out....so just keep nursing. You're supply will increase because of it. GL!

That's good! She's signaling your body to increase milk production! Stay hydrated, eat an extra snack, and settle in for some good, mindless TV ;)

  • @katehgee yes, it isn't like that all the time!  The first 6 weeks are the hardest where it is basically constant, but the vast majority then settle into a routine where they can go longer.  They also become more efficient at nursing, so it no longer takes 45 minutes a session which also gives you more time.
