Teething (Thread)

I think with all the questions lately about teething we should have a thread for it. What works? What to expect? When did it start? Any questions we might have here.

Re: Teething (Thread)

  • STMs- does the reaction to the first tooth give a pretty good picture how the baby will react with every tooth or is the first tooth a lot worse than the rest?
  • Loading the player...
  • DD's bottom teeth just broke through. She's been loving the raspberry pacifier teethers and her fingers.
  • I dropped DD off yesterday at day care with no teeth then picked her up yesterday evening and she had two teeth poking through. Her poor cheeks were BRIGHT red and she looked miserable. Tylenol is working best for her although I just picked up some teething tablets.
  • Wow @mollynicole214!   What a change in a day, huh?

I think we're close too.  Bright red cheeks, grumpy baby and I feel the bump.  I sometimes think I see a bit of white in the bump but then I'm not sure.

  • I've been using a peeled carrot (whole one, not a baby carrot). Super easy for DS to hold, the perfect size and it's cold. After he is done with it the dog gets a treat, so extra bonus!

Has anyone else had LO crying while sleeping? The last two nights DD has started crying to the point of tears, while still asleep, in the first 20 minutes after I put her down for the night. She hasn't been sick, no fevers. Both nights, the only symptoms were teething-related (red cheeks, drooling all the time, and gnawing ferociously on teethers or her hand).

After giving her tylenol and nursing back to sleep again, she slept soundly to the usual MOTN feeding. I feel so bad at how distressed she has been getting, and am not sure how else to help her.

+1 - I'm curious about this as well.

I have found that it varies on which teeth are cutting. My short answer is no.

Long answer: I feel like the middle top four and bottom four are the easiest to deal with. To me, with DS1, those popped through without too much issue. He drooled a ton and wanted to chew on everything but didn't actually seem to be in much pain. Molars are pretty terrible and on average you get one set at a year old and the other set at 2 years old. They were awful. DS had a fever, super cranky, slept terrible and seemed to be in the most pain at night (he cut his first molars just before his first birthday). And then you have canines and those are straight up the devil. It was molars times 10 for us. He was in lots of pain all the time and would barely even eat. We lived on tylenol. And maybe I am crazy but it usually took a full 2 weeks for the really bad ones to pop through, which felt like an eternity.

I am not trying to scare yall, but this was my experience with my older son. LO hasn't cut any teeth yet but I am dreading the process.

  • Tylenol didn't do much. I gave him a nuby spill free suppy cup and filled it with a lot of ice and a little water. The handles are great so he can easily hold it and he chews on it and the cold seems to help. He doesn't get much water either

Sort of. Sometimes it depends on the tooth. You'll get a better feel after a few teeth. For DS, the top incisors and all four canines were worst. ETA: One year molars also sucked. Two years were cake though, he slipped two of them in without my even knowing.

  • With DS I knew he was about to pop a tooth when he'd be fine, then randomly cry while throwing himself on the floor and whipping his head back and forth. I'd peek in his mouth and see a white line (or dot for canines) under the gums.

I tried a bunch of stuff with DS and now just to straight to Advil. Advil for general teething discomfort and baby oragel for the really bad times.*

Hold onto your hats, ladies, it's a helluva ride!

*Advil only after six months, Tylenol before that. Oragel in moderation and supervised as it can numb airways.

This was almost always a symptom of teething for us with DS1. We also went the Tylenol route (or Motrin after 6 mos) and it always helped.

I think DD is starting to teeth but I don't feel any bumps or see any white spots.  She'll chew pretty much anything and everything but her teething rings.  She can't seem to figure out they need to go into her mouth horizontally not vertically.  Going to get a different kind today.  This morning's bottle was a disaster, she cried for it but would only chew the nipple and barely suck on it but keep wanting it.  Wants her paci more now but seems to chew that as well. She's been fussy all week, drooling.  It's hard to tell if she's miserable due to teething or gas.  I know they can have symptoms for a long while before actually cutting a tooth.  I'm reluctant to give her Tylenol if she isn't teething.  Not sure what to do.

bazingaa - my mom used peel carrots for me when I was teething.  She said I loved them and couldn't get enough.

Wanting to eat and then crying when they try to...that sounds like teething to me. Why not try Tylenol or Motrin (if baby is 6 months, I'm mobile) once and see if it helps?

  • It's pretty outdated advice that babies can't take ibuprofen. My pedi okay'ed it at 6 weeks. There's a good dosage chart by weight on the dr. sears website.

I googled it to see if anything had changed since my oldest. It still says under six months consult a physician. I suspect it's one of those things that is fine but it's best to consult a pedi to get dosage right, but I'd still at least ask my pedi first.

Update: DS was a disaster yesterday. He was very clingy and cried at everything. He was also hot and flushed but no fever. Tylenol worked pretty well. It got him to nap 2 1/2 hours and then he slept 12 hours with Tylenol and teething tablets. We had to regress and swaddle him and put him in his swing to get him to sleep, but whatever works! He seemed much happier this morning and less flushed.

  • My baby girl got her first tooth today! She was crabby and slept more than usual. I thought she was going through a growth spurt. I felt her mouth just to make sure and felt a tooth :)
  • Does it seem your LO's teething pain is worse at bedtime?   Do your LOs bite on your chin?   For the past several nights, my little guy just melts down at bedtime.  I thought it was reflux or a gas bubble, but I think it just seems that way because after screaming so much he swallows air and then later burps.   Tonight was the worst yet.  He was screaming and gnawing frantically on my chin.   I have a hickey on my chin now!

  • I just wish these teeth would hurry up! DS isn't a crier at all. The last three days he just cries and whines and I know he's in pain.. I feel awful for him. I keep feeling and nothing yet. He woke up crying but it was a different kid of cry. I could just tell he was in pain. So DH gave him frozen washcloths all day. He loves them. This teething business sucks!

  • My DD's tooth broke through Monday. How long does it usually take to fully come through?
  • DS has a legit rectangle pushing up out of his gums on the bottom and a corner of the top right tooth already through. Poor thing is miserable. I wish I could do more to help him. He's drooling buckets (which caused a rash on his face), can't sleep, cries when he chews on things, has diaper rash for the first time, etc. His doctor prescribed him children's tylenol instead of infant. He gets 2.5mg every 4-6 hours as needed. The pedi just did some math with DS's weight and said it should work better for us. Granted, DS is almost 21lbs.....

  • Question, has anyone had any feeding issues. My DD use to down 25-28 oz a day. Pass couple of days she is at 14-18 oz. Just wondering if teething this is normal with teething.
  • This whole teething thing can kiss my ass.. DS is an awesome sleeper since he was 7 weeks old. He sleeps 10-12 hours a night. The last two nights he's waking up crying poor baby and I know he's in pain I wish these teeth would just come through already!

Yes. DS usually drinks 26-28 oz a day and lately it's been 24. And when he eats he pulls away from his bottle so I know his gums hurt.
  • thanks ladies! teething is just evil and I wish it would end and bring my kid back
  • DS's 2nd tooth popped out yesterday morning and it didn't seem to bother him.  However, last night was rough.  None of us slept much.   This morning his diaper wasn't as wet as I would expect, he had a slight fever and flushed cheeks.   He slept almost 3 hours (so unlike him) and woke up in good spirits, but again, with decreased urine output.   Now, he has 1 hot red cheek.   Do you think this is all teething?  I feel kinda silly calling the nurse because I called them just yesterday about him rubbing his ear vigorously.  They said that might be caused by teething, so I hate to look dumb by calling in yet more teething symptoms to them.

  • Thanks @athn64.  I did call the nurse and they had me come in.  Since the cheek was red & hot, and there was a slight fever, she said they wanted to rule out cellulitis.   Of course, by the time the appointment arrived, the heat was gone from his cheek and the redness had faded a lot.  She thinks overall that he probably just has a hard time teething and that maybe he's not taking in as much fluid, resulting in the decreased output.   I'm glad it's ok and they didn't make me feel silly at all, which is nice.  :)

. It's normal for there to be a change. Sometimes they'll eat less, sometimes more...depends on what hurts and if sucking helps it hurt less.

  • Well after the many months of teething we finally have a little tooth coming through! I'm hoping it comes through quick and minus the pain!
  • LO had his first one to break through 4 days ago. I am officially going on 6 days of hardly any sleep. Tylenol has been the only relief at times. We have been doing the cold rings and he doesn't want anything to do with it. He just wants to lay on his mommy stay up all night. I've been living off of rockstars for energy.

It also looks like he has another one coming as well.

  • My son got his two bottoms one after another two weeks ago. He had bright red cheeks and no other symptoms except some changes in his sleep. He still slept, but wanted to be in my arms all the time. Hard to get him to stay asleep in his crib.
  • Also, he loves the MAM brand teether with the three things sticking out.
  • DD has two bottom teeth coming in - they have been coming in for a full week now and still not all the way through. Poor thing!

  • I feel like it will never end, 3 weeks ago she got her first tooth after months of teething, then a week later another one came in right next to it and I feel as if there are more on their way bc poor baby has bright red cheeks still, drooling all over and is very fussy... She only wants to chew on my fingers or a terry teether which I soak in water and freeze (and then drips all over while she chews on it lol) It feels like it will just be months and months of teething ... 2 down and about 22 to go?

We have 4 teeth completely out already and I'm starting to think we will be seeing more soon.. He's been back to drooling and fussing all night. It seems really early for the next ones since everything I read says 9-10 months but he was early with the top and bottom teeth... I feel like we finally got this sleep thing figured out and now it's all ruined!

P's canines came in before his front teeth! This child is a freak!
