Babies: 9 - 12 Months

WWYD Poll: cereal, gas, rash and constipation

DS started rice cereal at Thanksgiving when he was 4.5 months old.  It made him really, really gassy, and he only pooped every 3-5 days.  So the nurse told me to try oatmeal with prune juice.  Still only pooped every few days.

While cleaning up one of his massive blow outs, we noticed a rash (dry, red, scaly skin) on his back.  He's always had dry skin and I thought it was irritated from the poo.  I can't remember if that was before or after we gave him prune juice, but maybe after.

Over Christmas, he didn't have cereal for days in a row, but was still really gassy and rashy.  So I'm not sure if the cereal/prune juice is causing the gas and rash or not.

Yesterday, he had a hard turd, followed by massive liquid blowout a few hours later.  I called pedi, and they said to keep doing what I'm doing to see what happens.

The dr. said no other solids until 6 months (next week), but I think he's ready for some sweet potatoes.

The gas is keeping him up at night, and I know he's ready for solids/cereal because he's nursing 11 times in 24 hours and will be 6 months next week.  He's also teething if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Re: WWYD Poll: cereal, gas, rash and constipation

  • why wouldn't you just wait a week for the sweet potatoes?  their hunger is not the only factor in determining whether a baby is ready for solids - it seems like your DC is having trouble digesting solid food, so I see absolutely no reason to rush into adding something else.  you should take it very slow.  wait until after your doctor sees him next week to keep an eye on whether or not it might be a food allergy, then start the new foods one by one with significant time in between (at least 3 days).

if you add sweet potatoes now, you won't be able to get a clear answer on whether DC is reacting to the oatmeal/juice combo.  it's not smart to keep adding new things onto an unresolved situation.

  • My ds also has constipation and allergy issues. We skipped rice cereal and started him on sweet potato as his first solid. We are taking solids slow, one solid a week and one at a time in case he has a reaction. Before this we were giving him prune juice with water for constipation along with an Rx for lactalose. We stopped the prune juice over the holidays and he started pooping regularly, so we haven't given it to him since.

I would definitely consult your pedi about possible allergies, especially before you introduce anything new (sweet potato is not a huge risk, but appple can increase gas, I think).
