Pregnant after a Loss

Progesterone??

Hi Girls,

I just wanted to say hello as I got a positive test the other day!

I have a question, has anyone does progesterone suppositories?   I am just wondering what to expect.  I picked them up yesterday, but they didn't give me a ton of info - just to call the doc if anything seems off.   They did warn me about mood changes and possible irritation issues.   So I am just curious as to what others might have expierenced.   Also, how long did you have to use them for??

TIA,
Renee

  • I was also really nauseous and I'm sure that they had something to do with it.

  • Welcome and congrats!

I took prometrium suppositories twice a day for the first thirteen weeks of this pregnancy.  At first, I would have a little dizziness in the first hour or so after each dose, but eventually I got used to them and had no problems.

As far as irritation goes (TMI), I found it best to put them in as high as possible, and sort of off to one side.  Then I didn't have any trouble.

After three losses, I really think the progesterone made the difference this pregnancy. Tons of luck to you!

  • I have been using these for three weeks, and have started to notice irritation also.
  • I was on the suppositories until I was 12 weeks.  They weren't the most fun, but I definitely think they helped!  I had some irritation and some spotting from them (my doc thinks they caused spotting).  Congrats on your BFP!
  • I took then 2x a day until 11 weeks.  One thing I had and it doesn't happen all the time is I had some brown spotting around 7-8 weeks and they said it can happen.  Also you may want to get some liners. Even if you have them in far enough they will still leak a little. It usually wasn't that bad if I stayed laying down for 30 minutes after, but we all know sometimes that isn't possible.  Other than that I didn't really have any side effects.  Good luck!
  • This may sound stupid, but just to be sure, you insert these vaginally, not rectally like other suppositories. ?I didn't have any side effect that I could tell. ?I did mine twice a day, and was told to lie down for 15 minutes afterwards, so I set my alarm 15 minutes early in the morning to do one and then snoozed, and then did one before bed. ?I did get some leakiness afterwards, but they say that that is the glycerin and all the medication gets absorbed before then.

  • Thanks for all the info.  I really really hope these work!!
  • I did!  *raises hand*

Well, I had to insert one twice a day.  The morning one didn't stay put too well but I always put the night one in right before I went to bed and that helped keep it in there.  A light panty liner is good to catch the discharge.  I didn't have many issues with mood changes and didn't have any spotting due to cervix irritation.  My boobs were way more tender though and I didn't realize that until I got off of them.  I think I was on them a total of 12 weeks.  The last two weeks they had me drop to once a day.
