Twins or just heavy?

So this is my second pregnancy and I am showing way more than last time. My husband is due for twins in his family; his mom is a twin and his dad's brothers (his uncles) are twins as well. I don't want to get my hopes up but seriously I am showing and already gained 4 pounds and am only 7 weeks so I'm hoping I'm just not gaining excessive weight this early when the baby is only supposed to be the size of a blueberry.

The only type of twinning that is hereditary is fraternal twins, and in order for it to be applicable in your scenario, it would have to be on your side of the family. Identical twins are not related to heredity and are spontaneous.

It's common to feel like you are showing earlier with your second pregnancy. Most people will tell you it is just bloat which is true, but it's often reported by many STMs.

Although the idea of twins can be fun and exciting, many people don't feel like it's right to wish a twin pregnancy on yourself as it can be serious and high risk, not to mention uncomfortable. I remember this being a hot button when moms of multiples are asked how to achieve twin pregnancies.

Everyone has been saying that it's common to show quicker with your second baby but I always assumed thats because the mother didn't loose the baby weight and already had the foundation built if you know what I mean? Twins haven't been in my family since back in Ireland in the 1800's.

My doctor said the female body is like a balloon, it takes a lot of effort to blow up the first time, but if you let the air out and blow it up a second time it blows right up easily and quickly. This is my first, but something to look forward to for next time!

I fear I'm just gaining too much weight I kept getting yelled at last pregnancy for gaining too much in total I gained 54 pounds... twins would be nice.

As PPs have mentioned, many stms find they show earlier as your body has already done it once before. This does not mean you're having twins. Anything you are "showing" now is bloat as your embryo at this point is at largest the size of a raspberry (I don't know how far along you are). The only way to find out if its twins is to get an ultrasound.

Not necessarily true. I weighed 4 lbs less when I got pregnant with this baby than with DS and I am in much better shape than I was 4 years ago, yet my bloat this time around (because that's what it is) is definitely more significant.

At less than 8 weeks, I wouldn't worry about gaining too much weight. I gained over 60lbs, probably closer to 70lbs with my DS and no one ever made a comment about my weight (except for one lady at work and I nearly ripped her head off, midwife didn't care at all), continue to eat as healthy as you can handle and try to walk around to get some exercise.

I don't get why people can't wrap their mind around twins. Twins happen when your body releases 2 eggs instead of 1. Your husband's sperm, and history of twins, has zero bearing on how many eggs your body releases.
